Be it known that l, WALTER l); MURPHY, a. citizen ot' the United States, residing; at N ew York city, in the county oi` `lew York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Railway Cars, ofwhicfh the 'ollowingis a specilieation.
My invention relates to the construct-ion of railway cars, more particularly box ears7 and its objectto provide a metal reinforcenient for the wooden end wall of a railway car which will besiinple in structure. and inexpensive to fabricate and install, and which can he readily applied either to new cars or to old cars requiring` repadr.4 The reinforcingr structure of my 'invention is of such character as to strengthen theend wall of y the car to which it isappliechboth as against the inertia thrusts of the ladingr and also as against the tendency of the car to Weave. and distort the training1 thereof. As the heavier parts of the cargo of the box ear are usually placed on or 4near the floor' it is the lower part ,of the car end wall which is apt to receive the severest cargo l thrusts. To strengthen the end against such thrusts l provide a steel plate extending across the car from side to side and so arranged that it does not involve reconstructing the sheathingr nor prevent the use of a wooden lining which. tor well known reasons. is nsnally required even in case of ears having metal. walls or metal ends. Preferably the reinforcement ot my invention involves the use et' a reinforcingl panel at the bottom oll the end wall which is arranged het veen the outer sheathing and the inner lining` of the car so that it does not appreciahlv shorten the inside length or the car nor increase its overall longitndinal dimension. In the modificationshown in Figs. 6 to 8 inclusive, the reinforcing structure consists preferably1 of a center sheet -ll and sheets 45, 45a'arranged 'at opposite sides the end lining boards lll and the end posts 30 of the car'and the vertical edges of the sheetv bent around the posts. These edges are also bent to provide flanges lo which bear against the inner surface'of' the end sheathing 10h. The innervertical edges of the sheets 45 are bent at right angles to the body of the sheet and formed with angular flanges all'v which overlap and are secured to the' flanges 4G by rivets 48. This construction rigidifies the end posts 30 at their lower ends and also provides suitable recesses in which the nailing strips 2o" may be seated.
