REMOVABLE CLOSURE FOE CONTAINERS.
' Specification of Letters Eatent. Patented Jan 1'? 1922 Application filed November 8,1821. Serial nations,
To (ZZZ w from it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY Sonnnmnn, a citizen of the United States; and resident of li hippany, in the county of Morris and a State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Removable Closures for Containers, of which the following is a specification.
i This invention relates to closures for containers and moreparticularly to the type of closure which includes an inset friction cover; and has special reference to the provision of a closure of this nature constituting an improvement on the Removable closure for containers shown in my copcnding an 'cation, Serial No. 345,928, of December being a co-pend'ng application. In my said co- )ending application,
Serial No, 3%,928, I disclose closure construction of the dished or inset friction type in which an integral portion of the coverila or side walls is extended inwardly to a lip adapted to be engaged for rethereon, the ei eniplification shown in .iginal bead located at the edge of the cover flange or side wall said head inset or rolled inovide the engaging lip. this latter construction suitably s intended function, 1 have found in manufacturing the containers and clois on a very extensive scale that there certain disadvantages incident to the inrolling step of the marginal head in such construction, and that the cloucture may he more cheaply ohin quantity production by producing p in liife entnianner as will be further description of the In the operation of ininwardly of the head as co-pending case, besides rec al forming implements and orerating step, the head.
and varied in length insetting ste 3 is ofttirnes E1111 the necessity for SQlQQtiOR the misfornied closures onerator, with a'resulting L 1 r to the cost of production, is a suit of experiments p rforms;
1.1:) 1919, the present application contniuation in part of the said M the closure by exerting an upward during extensive manufacture of these closures, I have found that in lieu of inturning the head to provide the ho, that the lip may he obtained in an eillcient and simple man he; by 'merely flattening orv mashing a portion th roof with the flattening or mashing effected preferably toprovide a fully inset lip. The fiattenin or mashing is effected in a simple operation, it having been found that with the lips so formed the closures may be manufactured at a reduced cost not only,
but that a stronger multi-walled lip is obtained, subject to less deformation when the closure removed forcibly from the. container in which it is tightly frictionally received The provision of an improved closure element with the lip so providedcomprehends the prime desideratum of my present' invention.
Other objects of my invention will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing's, in which 7 Fi ure l is a perspective view of the container with my improved closure element applied thereto'and showing'themanner of removing the said closure element, and
Figure 2 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view in detail taken on the line E22, Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, theclosure of my invention is intended for use with a corn tainer such as 10 provided with preferably straight side wallsterminating atthe upper end preferably in an outwardly rolled bead 11. While I disclose my closure as applied to a. container having a smooth side wall free from inward oro'ections it will be an;
parent that any type of container having an opening for an inset friction cover may be employed.
The cover of my present invention comprises the dished or inset closure generally designated as 12, having a preferably fiat bottom 13 and side wall or flange portion which is adapted to be frictionally received by the side walls of the closure 10 to form a tight fit therewith, the cover flange or sidewall 1d terminating at the upper edge in the marginal outwardly rolled bead 15. The cover bead 15 is adapted to contact with the upper edge of the container walls and more specifically in the present construction, with the container marginal bead il,'tlie head'll forming a seat for the closure the head 11 and the cooperating marginal bead 15 limiting the motionof the cover into the container.
For the purpose of roviding means adapted to be'engaged by tiie finger for moving the cover out of the container or removing the cover therefrom, a portion of the head 15 is flattened or mashed to provide the lip portion 16. The-flattening or mashing of the head is effected so as to preferably provide a completely inset lip 16, as clearly shown in the drawings. When soflconstrncted or formed, a multi-walled lip is effected which has been ilound strong and effective for the purpose intended, the lip resisting deformation when theffingers are inserted therebeneathand when the cover is removed from the frictionally retaining container Walls, it having been further found, as heretoliore reierred to, that the cost ot production or the closure is lessened by the flattening or mashingcf the bead in the manner described. p
The manner of making and the manner oi: using my improved closure will be fully apparent from the above detailed description thereof. It will be further apparent that I have provided an improved closure which may be produced cheaply and effectively in quantity production, providing a closure having, moreover, a uniformly neat and attractive appearance which may be easily manipulated in use.
While I have described the preferred form and use oi" my invention, it will be apparent that changes in tormand use may be made withoutdeparting from the spirit of the invention, defined in the followlng claims.
I claim 1. Incombination with a container having an open end; of a dished closure having a wall adapted to be placed in and frictionally engage said open end, the dished closure being provided with a-marginal bead at the upper. edge of the side wall thereof, an integral portion of thesaid bead being, flattened or mashed to provide an inwardly formed lip adapted to be engaged for removal of the closure by an upward pull thereon i 2. In combination witha container having an open end, of a dished closure having a wall adapted to'be placed in and trictionally engage said open end the dished closure being provided with an outwardly turned bead along the upper edge thereof adapted to seat over the open end of the container to limit the motion of the closure into the con tainer, an integral portion of the said head being flattened or mashed to provide an inwardly formed lip adapted to be engaged for removal of the closure by anupward pull thereon. r
In combination with a container having vertical straight side walls tree from inward projections and open at an end and a dished cover for closing the container, said cover including relatively flat bottom portion, a side wall substantially at right angles thereto and adapted to frictionally engage the side walls of the container, an outwardly extending bead along the upper edge of the side well adapted to engage the upper edge of the container to limit the motion of the cover into the container. and means for facilitating the removal of the cover,lsa1d means including a portion of said bead'flattened or mashed and inwardly set, providing an inwardly directed multi-walledlip spaced-from the bottom portionof the cover and adapted to be grasped by the tingers to exert an upward pull thereon for removal of the cover.
Signed at New York City, in the county of New York and State or New York, this 7th day of Nov, A. 1)., 1921. a ANTHONY SCHNEIDER.
