IGNOR TC GESTERLEIN MACHINE COMPAFEUY. OF 011? CINNATL CHIC.
MECHANICAL MQVEIv'IE-NT.
Application filed December To all 107mm 711 may concern:
Be it known that I. Louis 5. citizen of the United States, Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohi useful i meat? in Mechanical Yovements, of which the following a specification This invention, devised with special reference to the production of feeding motion in milling-machines will he readily nude"- stood from. the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1, is diagram illustrating tlie principle of my invention; and
Fig. 2, is a side elevation of the moving mechanism shown in its application to the ram of a milling-machine, constituting the best mode in which I have contemplated applying the pri'nciple of my invention,
In the drawing confining attention e2:- clusively to F 1:-
1, indicates a machine-part to be reciprocated in a right line in one direction a given distance at continuous speed and in the other direction at increased speed, this part being: hereinafter referred to as the carriage;
2, a roller provided on the carriage;
3, a driving-shaft, journaled in a bearing and to be revolved continuously by power;
i, a cam fast upon the driving shaft and having its periphery engaging the periphery of roller 2, the contour of the cam being a volute comprehending the major portion of the periphery of the cam;
5, a second cam on the driving shaft, this second cam not, iowever, engagin roller :2, a portionof the periphery of t ois second cam being in th form of a volute;
6, a first fixed pivot;
7, a second fixed pivot, the axes of the two pivots being parallel with each other and parallel with the axis of the driving shaft, the axes of these two pivots being in aline parallel with the line of recipro cation of the carriage;
8, an arm pivoted on pivot 6;
9, an arm pivoted on pivot 7 10, a link pivotally' connecting the two arms 8 and 9;
11, an extension of link 10; 12, a housing adjustably fixed on extension 11;
13, a roller mounted in this housing and enga 'ng; the periphery of cam 5;
i l, a spring in linl: 10 to permit of the yielding extension of the length of the link endwise with reference to the pivot uniting the link with arm 9;
15, screw in link 10 for adjustin compression of the spring;
16,, the journal of roller 2, this journal projecting sidewise of the carriage; and
an arm constituting in effect a prolon- Hill of arm 9, this arm 1'? bearing against journal 16. i
The two rollers 2 and 13 are on opposite sides of shaft 3. Journal 16 forms an abutment disposed between arm 17 and shaft 3 and engaged by arm 17 on that side away from the shaft 3. 4
/Vhen the shaft and cam t are rotated in the direction of the arrow, the cariage is moved to the right a distance represented by the throw of the cam When the cam shall be so turned as to give to the carriage its maximum stroke then the minor radius of cam 5 will engage roller 13 and cause the carriage to make its returned motion at quiclrened speed. The two cams are complementary to each other and are assumed being selected or designed to give to the carriage its desired degree of slow advancing motion through proper distance, and its return motion at higher rate of speed.
It is desired that the carriage, in being given its mot-ions, be engaged simultaneously by cam and by arm 17. To provide against inaccuracies of construction of the cams, and to provide against their wear, the link 10 is rendered elastic endwise by the spring 14, and the spring may be adjusted in compression by the screw 15, the result being that the engagement between journal 16 and arm 17, and the engagement between roller 13 and cam 5 are always maintained and lost motion of parts is prevented.
This movement has been devised with special reference to the movement of the ram of a milling-machine, which ram carries the cutter-spindle, the movement giving the endwise feeding movement and the quick return movement to the ram, the ram reciprocating in a path at right angles to the axis of the cutter-spindle. This emg the bodiment of my invention may be understood from an inspection of Fig. 2 in which the same numerals of reference are employed as in Fig. 1. along with additional numerals of reference.
Continuing with the drawing 18, indicates a column forming the body or frame of the milling machine;
19, a am-guide formed in the column;
20, a ram fitted to reciprocate in the ramguide;
21, a sleeve mounted for vertical. adjustment in the ram-guide in a line at right angles to the path of reciprocation of the ram,
22, the cutter-spindle journaled in the sleeve; and 23, an adjusting device connect ing the ram with the carriage 1.
In the exemplifying device illustrated in Fig. 2 the driving shaft 3 is journaled in the column below and at right angles to the ram, and the carriage l is adjustably fixed to the ram. The two pivots 6 and 7 are dis posed below the driving shaft, in a plane parallel with the path of reciprocation of the ram.
The pair of cams are to be so selected and conformed as to give to the ram certain regular or irregular oscillating motions, depending upon the predetermined peculiar requirements of the work. which the machine is to perform. The relation of the cutter-spindle to the carriage is adjustable t suit the stroke required.
