To all 1m: 021/. it v'lza z concern Be it known that I, Josnrrr Furrsor-rn, a citizen of the United States, residing at luente, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Power-Lift Cultivators. of which the following is a specification.
it is the object of the present invention to provide a power lift for cultivators and the like so arranged as to form an operating connection between the lift for the vehicle and the draw bar thereof whereby shifting of said connection will cause the draw bar to reverscly actuate the lift mechanism.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a construction of this character in which said shifting is manually initiated and completed by resilient means.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cultivator constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
The cultivator having the improved power lift is shown as comprising a usual frame 1 having rear cross bar 2 from which the earth engaging members 3 depend. An axle 4 is journaled in crank ends 5 upon which the wheels 6 are mounted.
The means employed for rocking axle 4 so as to raise or lower frame 1 and the earth engaging members with relation to the ground, consists of the following mechanism: A lever T is fixed intermediate of its ends to axle 4 in substantially upright position. A link 8 is pivoted to the upper end of this lever, preferably, by an adjustable connection including a plurality of apertures 9 in said connecting member and through any one of which a pivot pin 10 carried by the end of the lever is adapted to be received. The opposite end of the link is pivoted at 11 to one end of a lever 12 which is pivoted at 13 intermediate of its ends to a main longitudinar bar 14: of the frame.
A lever 15 projects rigidly from lever 12 at its pivot 13, said lever being arranged substantially at right angles to the length of slot 16 formed by the link. resilient connection is so arranged that the tension thereof may be exerted at either side of pivot 18 so as to rock lever 12 in either direction.
Thus by reference to Fig. 1, it will be seen that the tension of spring 17 is along a line below pivot 13 so as to swing the lower end of lever 12 forwardly. hen, however, the link is rocked upon its pivot 13 until the tension of spring 17 is exerted along a line above pivot 13, said spring will actuate lever 15 so as to rock the link upon its pivot until the upper end thereof extends forwardly. An operating connection is provided between the draw bar of the machine and the lever 12. For this purpose a draw bar 18 is slidable lengthwise of frame member 1 1 and the connecting member 19 is pivoted to the rear end of the draw bar. A roller 20 is journaled upon the opposite end of the connecting member, said roller being received within the slot 16 of lever 12.
lVith the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1, the roller 20 is at the bottom of slot 16 so that the pull exerted by the draw bar will tend to swing the lower end of the lever 12 forwardly and thereby actuate lever 7 through the link 8 so as to rock axle 4 to a position with the crank throws 5 swung upwardly, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. In this position the frame 1 is moved toward the ground and the earth engaging members 3 will operatively engage the ground.
hen, now, lever 12 is manually shifted upon its pivot 13 so that spring 17 will lie at the opposite side of pivot 13 and thereby continue the swing of lever 12 upon its pivot, the pull of the draw bar will shift roller 20 along slot 16 to the upper end of said slot. In this position the pull exerted by the draw bar will complete the pivotal shifting of lever 12 so that lever 7 is actu ated to rock axle 4 and thereby swing the crank throws 5 downwardly to cause upward lift of frame 1 through engagement of wheels 6 with the ground. By this ar rangement the earth engaging members 3 will be lifted from operative position.
The means employed for manually initiating the pivotal shifting of lever 12 may include a connecting member 22 adjustably connected to the lower end of lever 7 by means of pin 23 received in any one of a plurality of apertures 24 formed in the lever end. The opposite end of this connecting member is pivoted to a lever 25 which is fulcrumed at 26 intermediate of its ends to the vehicle frame. The upper end of this lever is provided with means for manually actuating the same from a distant point, say the drivers seat of the tractor or the like, which, is employed for pulling the cultivator. Said means may include a cable 27 extending forwardly from the lever and a second cable 28 extending rearwardly from said lever around a pulley 29 carried by an upright 30, said cable then also extending, forwardly.
By the construction as thus set forth it will be seen that by manually reversely shifting lever 25 through actuation of either cable 27 or 28, lever 7 will be shifted so as to initiate the pivotal shift of lever 12. This initial shift of the lever will cause movement of the resilient connection 17 from one side to the other of pivot 13 so that the tension of said resilient connection will continue the shift of said lever. Through this movement of the leven roller 20 will be shifted from one end tothe other of the slot 16 so that the pull exerted by the draw bar connected to the roller will be exerted against the opposite end of the lever and thereby complete the shifting of the same for rocking axle l. As a consequence the wheels 6 will be either lifted or lowered with relation to frame 1 so that the frame and the earth engaging members carried thereby will be either lowered or lifted with re lation to the ground.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is: I
1. The combination with a frame having a wheeled crank axle, of a draw bar operatively connected for rocking said axle, and resilient means for shifting said operating connection to cause reverse actuation thereof.
2. The combination with a frame having a wheeled crank axle, of means for rocking said axle including a lever, a draw bar shiftable for" operative connection with either end of said lever to cause reverse rocking of said axle, and resilient meansfor causing said shifting of the draw bar relative to said lever.
3. The combination with a frame having a wheeled crank axle, of means for rocking said axle including a lever, a draw bar shiftable for operative connection with either end of said lever to cause reverse rocking of said axle, means for manually initiating said shifting of the draw bar relative to said lever, and resilient means for completing said shift. r
