Description

. J. MAGUIRE.
ADDRESSING MACHINE.
APPL|cAT|oN-F1LED1uNE 26,1919.
Patented Jan. w, 11922,
@md/HMM.
A TTORNE Y mimeograph cylinder M1 and the vinlring 'shaft M5 from which the inlring device has previously been removed, is now inserted into the holes L9' and then journals in the farther frame M2. rlhe star wheel end of the shaft L7 is also passed through a corresponding hole in the side of the cylinder M1 and the star wheel C3 secured to the end of its shaft L7. rlhe star wheel of course being adapted to drive its shaft.
It is to be understood that witheach complete revolution of the cylinder M1 a letter is printed without the address. The openings S9 being placed at the right and left hand edges of the address area, it follows that it is only needed to rotate the winding reel S1 so that with each complete revolu-4 tion of the cylinder M1 a new address will be brought into position and this is done byY the action of the sta-r wheel C3 against the pin C4. vlinement is secured by varying the position of thepin C? in the slot CU. rthe action of the starwheel in passing the pin is suflicent to move the tape S12a distance equal to a center to center distance between the addresses. Y
It will be seen that since the' speed of rotation of the two reels must vary as their diameter changes, that the ratio of the pulleys must be such as to always drive the winding reel fast enough to receive the tapes. I i
Any excess motion is taken care of by the slippage in the belt S1. In order to insure al sufficient quantity of ink being supplied to the tape S12, l have constructed the auxiliary frame A1 upon which are mounted the felt rollers A2 on the shafts Afy'lhe shafts A3 rotate in the slots A4 which are radial from the shaft L4 and can be adjusted' by means of the screws M5 which will vvaryY the pressure of the felt rollers A? against thetape S12. lt is evident that the number or position of these rollers could easily be changed without departing from the spirit of my invention. i
`While I have thus illustrated and described my invention it is not my intention Vto limit myself `to this precise Vforni or method of application of my invention but intend that it shall cover all forms and modiiications that fall fairly within the appended claims.
`What I claim isy Y l. An addressing machine having the combination of a mimeograph cylinder with an addressing device contained therein, consisting of a frame mounted .on the shaft of said cylinder, a pair `of concave Vrollers mounted on said frame in a'fmanner to project through the curved thickness of the mimeograph cylinder at each end of the desired location for the address, an endless ink pad adapted to pass around said rollers,V
an address bearing tape of mimeograph paper arranged to pass outside of said ink pad in the curved plane occupied by the mimeograph sheet and a means for actuating said tape and ink pad.
2. ln an addressing machine adapted to be used in conjunction with a cylindrical mimeograph machinej the combination of aV frame arranged to support a pair of rollers, an endless inlr pad arranged to pass around vboth rollers and outside'of said mimeograph cylinder, an address bearing tape arranged to pass over the outside portion of said ink pad, an unwinding spool containing said tape, a winding spool adapted to receive said tape after it has passed over saidink pad, a smut preventing ribbon wound on said spools with said tape but not passing overl vinlr pad, a means for actuating's'aid tape consisting of a drive shaftv arranged to drive said spools, and astar wheel adapted to actuate said drive shaft, and an address positioning means consisting of a starwheel pin mounted 1n a slot on the frame of said inimeograph machine and arranged to be locked in any desired position.
