LEANDER P. SHAW, 0F BRADFORD, PENNSYLVAMA.
LOCK JOINT FOR RODS.
inoaaoi.
Application led March 18,1921.l Serial No. 453,231.
To all lwhom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LEANDER P. SHAW, a citizen of the United Sta-tes, residing 1n the city of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lock Joints for Rods, ofwhich lthe following is aspecification, reference being had to the accompanying dra-wings.A
This invention pertains to lock joints for rods, and is especially designed for use upon the sucker rods of pumps and oil wells.
The object is to provide a simple and eflicient lock joint of this kind which may be much more readily and quickly adjusted for interlocking the abutting ends of such rods than the ordinary devices employed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the stub end of the sucker rod;
Figure 2 is an end view of the same;
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the fork end of the other rod to be joined, showing the key fork partially advanced;
Figure 4 is an end view of the same;
Figure 5 is a detail of the key fork removed from the guide slots formed lnthe end of the rod.
Figure 6 is an assembly view.
Figure 7 is a detail of the lock fork.
The invention consists in chambering out the stub end 1 of one sucker rod 2, at each side so as to leave themain lead grooves 3 extending to the end of the rod, the lateral, oppositely directed lool@ recesses 4, which form the oppositely directed lock shoulders 5, and finally the shallow surface recesses 6 extended laterally from the main grooves 3 and also reaching to the end of the rod.
The end 7 of the other rod 8 which is to be joined to the rod 2, is formed to embody an integral lock fork 9, the tines 10 whereof have inwardly turned lock lugs ll, adapted to slide longitudinally within the main lead grooves 3 of the end 1 and then, turning laterally, to engage the lock shoulders 5, thus preventing longitudinal stress from separating the' rods. At the same time the tines 10 turn laterally into the surface recesses 6, thus presenting a uniform and even outer surface along the two rods. Guide slots 12 are chambered out, one at one side of each side the tines l() and into the grooves 3, thus locking the lugs 11 into engagement with the shoulders 5. To unlock or disconnect the two rods, the key fork 14 is drawn back from the grooves 3, after which the lugs 11 may be twisted or turned laterally out of the recesses 4 and from engagement with the shoulders 5, and the rods may be pulled apart.
"While I have herein described a certain specific method of constructing and assem- Specication of Letters Patent. 1' Patented Jamo 11(1), jjgjggn bling the elements of my invention, it is unu derstood that the same may be varied in minor details, not departing from the spirit of my invention as defined in the appended claims. y
What I claim to be new and patentable is: 1. A lock joint for rods, consisting in chambering out@ one end of one rod toform oppositely positioned longitudinal lead grooves, laterally connected and extended shallow recesses, and deeper lock recesses and resulting shoulders at the inner ends of the shallow recesses; an integral lock 'fork with inwardly turned lock lugs formed at one end Aof the other rod, said lugs being adapted to travel the grooves aforesaid and to laterally engage the said lock recesses of the first mentioned rod; rearwardly connected guide slots -formed one at one side of each of the' tines of the said'fork; and a key fork slidingly mounted in said guide slots, the prongs thereof beine ada ted to travel the'grooves in the end1 of t e first mentioned rod, for locking the lock lugs @y v v i' mesma.
aepied to engage said lead grooves and of the lock fork for holding said lock lugs oek shoulders; guide slots formed at the in engagement wish the lock shoulders. sides ef the times 0f said fork, seme being conneced; by s mortise at their inner'ens; LEANDER P SHAW' :md a key fork sdingly mounted im said Witnesses: guide slots, .its prongs .being ada ted to P. G. HOUGHTQN,
travel said lead grooves'elongside e eines F. D. Hmxox.
