rarest HARRY Vil". MLLER, Gi" CHCGO, ILJINOISv1 ASSIGNOR T0 ERO IN'FACTURING COMPANY, QE? CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
SIDE-CAR CENTER BRACE.
Application lled January 14, 1921.
To all LU/0m t may concern Be it known that l, HARRY W. MILLER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident ot Chicago, in the ycounty of Cook, State oia illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side- Car Center Braces, ot which the following is a spec-ilication This invention relates to resilient center braces ior the connection between motor cycles and their side cars, and has "for its obj ect z- To provide a striiu-tural 'formation and association oi he brace parts whereby a substantial. bracing is attained with a desired tlexibility and prevention of jar transmis-- sion from the car to the motor-cycle and vice versa. and which adapted 'for attachment to car bodies ot ditlerent widths in a ready" and eti-active manner, all as will hereinafter more tally appear.
ln the accompanying` drawingzllig. l, is a perspective view illlistrating the general arrangement of the present center brace, the n'iotor-cycle and side car being shown in dotted lines.
Fi 2, is a detail longitudinal sectional elevation of the outer portion of the center brace and showing its attachment to transverse shattot the side car.
Fig. 3, is a detail transverse section on line F ig. 2.
Like reference numerals parts in the diiierent views.
Referring to the drawing, l designates the transverse shaft by which the running gear of the side carv is connected to the frame of the motor-cycle by the usual hinged or pivotal connection 2.
3 designates the usual diagonal center brace h a ving a curved shape and attached at one end to the iframe ot the motor-cycle by a hinge or pivot connection 4l of any usual. and suitable construction. ln the present improrement the other and outer end ol the indicate like brace Si .is oi a tubular form, extending parallel with the aforesaid transverse shaft l et the side car, and connected thereto in an adjustable manner by means as follows.
5 designates a split clip sleeve fitting the shaft l and adapted to be clamped thereon at any desired transverse location by a clamping bolt 6 passing through oriliced ears at oneend of the counterpart halves-of the clip.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented dana lill, M522.
serial no. 437,201.
7 designates a stud bolt passing through oriced ears at the other end ot the clip sleeve 5 to attach the same together, and in the presentv improvement said stud bolt carries at one end a spherical head 8 adapted tor bearing engagement with a resilient connection of the center brace 8 as follows.
9 designates an abutment plug or block fixed in the bore ot the center brace 3 near the outer end of the sameI and l0 designates a companion plug or block screwed or otherwise fitted into the outer end et the center brace 8 in spaced relation'to saidipixed plug or block 9, with trie intermediate tubular wall. of the brace 3 aforesaid formed with an elongated slot il 'i'.or the reception and movement of the shank portion oit the stud bolt 7 aforesaid.
ll and l2 designate bearing plates or disks arranged in the bore et the center brace 53 and adapted tor engagement with the opposite sides oi? the spherical head S ou the stud bolt 7 aforesaid.
13 and le designate cushion springs arranged between the bearing disk ll and the fixed block 9 and between the bearing disk l2 and the outer plug` 10, respectively, and adapted to resiliently hold said bearing disks .in contact with the spherical head 8 aforesaid.
l5 designates a segmental cap or cover plate associated with the shank oli' the stud bolt 'l' and with the elongated slot 3 of the center brace 3 and adail''ted to cover or close said slot against the entry of dust, etc., while permitting a normal independent movement of the shank of said stud bolt in said slot.
1G designates an adjustable bearing disk interposed between the outer plug` l() aforesaid and the'adjacentend et its spring 14.
17 designates an adjusting screw arranged axially in the plug lll, to afford means tor regulating the tension of both the springs i3, lll, in as much as that with the present construction an increase or a decrease in tension oi one spring will automatically effect a corresponding change in the tension ot' the companion spring.
Having thus i'ully described my said invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A center brace for the side cars of motor-cycles comprising in combination, a tubular diagonal brace member having an elongated slot neer its outer end, a Clip inember adapted for attachment to a transverse shalt or the running gear of the side car and carrying a stud bolt provided With a spherical end head With the stem of the stud belt having movement in said elongated slot, bearing disks arranged in the bore or' the brace and having bearing against the opposite sides of said spherical head, and cushien springs individual to said bearing disks.
A center brace for the side cars of motor-cycles comprising in combination, Va tu bular diagonal brace member having an elongated slot near its outer end, a clip member adapted for attachment toa transverse shaiit of the running gear of the side car and carrying a stud bolt provided with a spherical end head with the stem of the stud bolt having movement in said elongated slot, bearing disks arranged in the bore or the (brace and having bearing against the opposite sides of said spherical head, cushion springs individual te said bearing disks, and means for adjusting the tension oi said springs. f v
3. A center brace for the side cars .of motor-cycles comprising in combination, a tnbular diagonal brace member having an elongated slot near its outer end, a clip member adapted for attachment to a transverse shaft of the running gear of the side car and carrying a stud bolt provided with a spherical end head with the stem ot the stud bolt having movement in said elongated slot, a cover plate associated with saidrslot and stud bolt, bearing disks arranged in the bore of the brace and having bearing against opposite sides or' said spherical head, and cushion springs individual to said bearing disks. l
4. A center brace for the side'cars of Inotor-cycles comprising in combination, a tubular diagonal brace member having an elongated slot near its outer end, a clip memresaca@ vber adapted for attachment to a transverse shaft of the running gear of the side car and carrying a stud bolt provided with a spherical end head with the stem oi the stud bolt having movement in said 'elongated slot, bearing` dislrs arranged in the bore of the brace and having bearing against the opposite sides or said spherical heads, a iixed bearing plul'g arranged in the borev eli' the brace member near one end of said elongated slot, a bearing plug fixed in said brace member near theother end 03 said slot, individual springs arranged between the respective plugs and disks, an adjustable bearing dish arranged between the bearing plug and its springs and an adjusting screv7 arranged aXially in said plug. A
