Application filed July 26,
To all whom it may 01m corn:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. HnRrLnIN. a citizen of the United States, residing at ll laywood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air Guns, of which the following is specification.
This invention relates to air guns and has for its object to provide a gun having novel means whereby the same may be cocked or set tor use with a minimum of effort on the part of the operator. 7
A further object of the invention is to provide an air gun which will not go off accidentally and which is therefore extremely safe in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a gun of the class described which is of highly simplified construction, durable in use and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
Figure 1 is a detail longitudinal sectional view through the gun.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on line 2+2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a group perspective of aplunger and associated elements.
lnthe drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 designates a case which is provided with a chamber 6 forming a housing for the operating parts for the gun. As illustrated in Figure l a-barrel 8 is secured to thecase 5 by means of straps 9 and slidably receives a pistonlO having a rearwardly directed piston rod 11 surrounded by a coiled spring 12. The forward end of the coiled spring 12 contacts with the rear side of the plunger .10 while the rear end of the spring contacts with a. transversely extending partition 14:, Nuts 15 are threaded on the plunger rod 11 on opposite sides of the piston 10 and may be adjusted to vary the position of the piston 10 with relation to the plunger rod.
The rear end of the piston rod 11 is provided with a downwardly extended dog 18 secured thereon by means of a nut 19. When the dog 18 is drawn rearwardly by means to be later described the coiled spring 12 is contracted and the piston 10 is set for operation. lVhen the dog 18 is released the piston 10 immediately moves forwardly to project or discharge a projectile 20 of any AIR GUN.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patgntgdl J 111) 1 1921. Serial No. 487,612.
suitable size. When the dog 18 moves forwardly, the same engages a cushioning washer 23 secured on the plunger rod rearwardly of a nut 21 which is threaded on the plunger rod. A spacing tube 22 is coniined between the partition 15 and the nut 21.
The piston rod 11 is drawn rearwardly by means of an arm 24 having its rear end ex tended angularly and bifurcated as indicated at 25,50 asto slidably receive the tube 22and to extend on opposite 'sidesol the cushioning washer When the arm 24% is drawn rearwardly the angularly extended end portion of thesame engages the dog 18 and thereby retracts the piston 10. The forward portion of the arm 2% is extended an gularly in the opposite direction fromthe extended end portion 25 as indicated at 2? and has pivotal connectionwvith the rearwardly extending link connected to the forward end of a lever as indicated at 31. With reference to Figure 1 it will-be observed that the forward portion of the settinglever 30 is curved upwardly andfon wardly so that when the rearwardly extending handle 33 of the same is drawn downwardly and forwardly about the pivot element 3% the link 28 will is drawn real wardly for cooking the gun.
The setting lever 30 is provided with a curved portion 36 which constitutesa guard for the trigger 37 connected to a trip 38 adapted to engage the lower portion of the dog 18 whereby to hold the plunger 10 in a retracted position. A coiled spring'39 is confined between the laterally extending arm 40 of the plunger and the rear portion of a guide 41 and acts to normally hold the trip 38 in engagement with the plunger 18 when the piston is retracted.
The longitudinally movable arm 24 is supported for sliding movement. on the guide 41 and the lower terminal portion of the arm 18 is alsov received within'said guide.
In carrying out the invention the gun may be provided with a stock 1-5 and with an extension 46 on the forward end of the barrel. Should the projectile 20 be inserted into the barrel prior to cocking air may be admitted into the barrel through a valve opening 17 which is surrounded by a cage 18 within which is arranged a ball valve 49. With reference to Figure 1 it will be observed that the ball valve 49 is normally held in its seated. position by means of a coiled spring, the said coiled spring being confined between the ball valve and the lower side of the barrel. VVhenthe piston 10 is retracted the ball valve 49 is unseated to admit a quantity of air to be supplied to the barrel. In operation the lever 30 is operated to draw the arm 24: rearwardly for the purpose of cocking the gun. Vhen it is desired to the the gun it is merely necessary to pull on the trigger 37 whereupon the dog 18 is released to permit of the advancement of the pistonlO. A projectile may be readily inserted into the gun by any suitable means and by reason of the construction described it will be discharged at a high velocity.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed is:' r
1. A gun of the class described comprising a casing, a barrelconnected to the casing, a piston arranged in the barrel and having a rearwardly'directed piston rod, .a'
whereby to crank said gun, and a cushioning washer-secured on said piston rod in advance of said dog and adapted to engage the angularly ext-ending end portion of said arm.
2. A gun of the class described comprising a cas ng, a barrel connectedto the casing, a p ston arranged in the barrel and havlng a rearwardly directed piston rod, a partition traversing the barrel, a colled sprlng con- 1 fined between saidpartition and the piston for advancing the piston, a downwardly ex tending dog secured to the rear end ct said piston rod, a tripping device engaged with said dog and having a trigger, a longitudinally movable arm having its rear portion extended angularly and bifurcated to straddle said piston rod, and to engage said dog, a link pivotally connected to the forward portion of sad arm, a lever pivoted inter mediate its ends and having pivotal connection with the rear portion of said link whereby to crank said gun, a cushioning washer secured on said piston rod in advance of said dog and adapted to engage the angularly extending end portion of said arm, and a guide slidably receiving said arm and said dog.
A gun of the class described comprising a casing, a barrel connected to the casing, a piston arranged in the barrel and having a rearwardly directed piston rod, apartition traversing the barrel, a coiled spring confined between said partition and the pis ton for advancing the piston,'a downwardly extending dog secured to the rear end of said piston rod, a tripping device engaged with said dog and having a trigger, a longitudinally movable arm having its rear portion extended 'angularly and bifurcated to straddle said piston rod, and to engage said dog, a linkpivotally connected to the forward portion of said arm, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends and having pivotal connection with the rear portion of said link whereby to crank said gun, a cushioning washer secured on said piston rod in advance of said dog and adapt-ed'to en gularly extending end-portion'of said arm, a guide slidably receiving said arm and said dog, and a check valve admitting air to said barrel. i
In testimony whereof, I have affixed my signature in the )resence of two witnesses.
