IUS SUCHER, 0F PHILADELP-EA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PHUNO GRAPH REER OD''GER.
Application led May 19,
To @ZZ fio/rom t may cof/wem:
Be it known that l, Pins Suoi-Inn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful improvements in Phonograph Reproducers, ot' which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to 'phonographs and more particularly to reproducers tor use 1n connection therewith, and has for an object to provide a reproducer which is of a simple construction and which will eiiectively reproduce the desired sounds from a phonograph record and transmit the same to the usual apparatus of a phonograph machine.
The invention comprehends among other features, a reproducer which is almost entirely made up of non-vibratory parts and materials, excepting of course, the usual dia-- phragm, the material employed in the body construction of the reproducer being prefer ably wood oi some other similar material which will not be susceptible to the vibrations ot sound, when used in the body formation of the article.
ln the further disclosure of the invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of ref crence denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which?- Figure 1 is a sectional view taken through the reproducer.
Figure 2 is a view looking at the face of the reproducer.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3*?) in Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring more particularly to the views, the reproducer in its entirety is indicated by the numeral 10 and comprises a substantially circular body 11, made of wood and having projecting from its periphery, an extension or ledge 12, a suitable tubular coupling 18 being arranged to project from a central opening 111 in the body, said coupling being adapted for connection with the usual tone arm (not shown) of the phonograph machine. The body 11 is cupped out or recessed as at 15, and disposed against the tace of the recess and within the same is a rubber or other gasket or washer 16 in the nature of a spacing element, this part having a diaphragm 17 disposed to abut against it with lpeciilcaton of Letters ipatented dan.. 1d, 1922. serial no. enanas.
a second gasket or washer 18 placed against the opposite face of the diaphragm so that the diaphragm will be supported between these two spacing washers or rings 16, 18, as shown. i collar 19 is now inserted in the recess 15 and is secured to the body by suitable screws 20, said collar serving to hold the spacing elements or rings 16, 18, rigidly in position in the recess and thus secure the diaphragm. rllhe collar 19 is made of wood and the said collar has a transverse or diametrical opening 21, which registers with a bore or opening 22 in the body 11 for the passage through said openings, of a stylus bar 23, having its inner end secured in any desired manner to the center of the diaphragm 17, said stylus bar after passing through the openings 21, 22, being adapted to extend into a tubular holder 2st which is secured in and passes through a yoke 25, said holder being secured in the yoke by a suitable set screw 2G which also passes through the hol der and engages the extremity of the stylus bar to secure the latter relatively to the holder. The yoke is secured to the eX- tension or ledge 12 by suitable screws 27 as shown in Figure 3 and the holder 2Liprojects beyond a side of the yoke and is adapted to have a needle 28 inserted therein, in its free end, said needle being held in the yoke by a. suitable set screw 29 which bears in a suitable collar 3G encircling the holder. ln ternosed between the yoke 25 and the eXtension or ledge 12, is a resilient wafer or plate 25, preferably made ot rubber or some other suitable resilient material, the screws 27 passing' through the said wafer with the latter provided to allow just suillcient give or movement to the stylus bar 23 to insure the transmission ot the necessary vibra-tory movement to the diaphragm 17 when the device is in use.
lilith the construction set forth it will be seen that the body 11, collar 19 and yoke 25, being made or wood as previously mentioned, these parts will be of a substantially rigid nature as to the vibrations or sound and by having the holder 24 arranged as an independent or separate part of the yoke and stylus bar 23, but in connection or engagement therewith, it will be clear that the various parts can be readily assembled and as easily taken apart for the purposes of repair andthat with the construction set forth there is provided a reproducer which because of the simple nature ot its parts-can be cheaply manufactured to eiectively accomplish the desired purpose.
Having described my invention, I claim;-
A reproducer comprising a wooden body havingl a recess in one side and also having an integral reduced radial projection on its rear portion, a tubular coupling secured in the back of the body and communicating with said recess, a wooden collar secured in said Vrecess and arranged iiush with the face of-the body, a diaphragm secured in the PIUS SUCHER.
