GEORGE E. PETERSON. F STORY CITY, IOWA.
INTAKE MANIFOLD.
Application filed January 24, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. Pnrnnson, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Story Cit-y, Story County, Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Intake Manifolds, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide means for limiting and restricting flow through a manifold and particularly toward one outlet therefrom.
My invention consists in the provision of means for limiting and restricting the fiow of fuel mixture through an intake manifold and particularly toward one out-let therefrom.
My invention consists further in the construction, arrangement and combination of elements hereinafter set forth pointed out in my claim and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which-- Figure 1 is an elevation of a common form of intake-manifold, to which one form of my improvement is applied. Figure 2 is a horizontal section on the indicated line 2-2 of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a vertical section on the indicated line 3-3 of Figure 1.
The drawing illustrates generally a common form of intake manifohh ordinarily employed in the Ford construction to supply fuel mixture to four cylinders arranged in a row. The manifold is constructed. in a single piece of metal by molding, and comprises a neck flaring from bottom to top; a goose-neck 11 having a flange 12 adapted to be secured to a carburetor (not shown) and afford communication between said carbureter and the lower end of said stem; lateral arms 13, 1% commimicating'at their inner ends with the wider upper end portion of the neck; and rip-turned end portions 15, 16011 the outer ends of the arms, each of which end portions is formed with a face 17 (one of which is shown in Figure 3) adapted to fit a seat on an engine casing (not shown) and provided with a port registering with a port in said seat. The front and rear portions 18, 19 of the wall of the Specification of Letters latent.

neck 10 are differently inclined as shown.
Ordinarily the cross-sections of the arms 13, 1
arms and ports is unequal, there being ma terially greater flow through the arm 14 and its terminal port particularly under suction of the foremost cylinder and into said foremost cylinder, than through the arm 13 or even to the second cylinder relative to the foremost. Such greater flow provides a charge in the foremost cylinder beyond the capacity of its ignition device to explode and beyond the capacity of its exhaust device to scavenge. To avoid this difficulty it is desirable to limit or restrict the flow or passage of fuel mixture through the arm 1 1 and experiment has demonstrated that such effectmay be well produced in the man ner illustrated. A slot is formed in the front portion 18 of the wall of the neck 10 adjacent to the inner end of the arm 1i, and a batiie plate is mounted rigidly in said slotand extends into the bore or cavity of the neck. It would seem to be preferable to form the slot and insert and solder or braze the baffle plate therein as giving greater accuracy in the location of the inner edge of the baffle plate; however, the plate may be formed integral with the wall by molding, or other means may be employed to effect a restriction of the flow through the arm'll, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim as my invention In an intake manifold having a neck and two lateral arms leading therefrom, said neck being formed with a. tranverse slot, a baffle plate mounted rigidly in said slot and extending within the bore of said neck adjacent to the inner end of one of said arms.
Signed at Story City, in the county of Story and State of Iowa, this 31 day of Dec,
GEORGE H. PETERSON.
