To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Jesse A. B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing in Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typewriting machines, and more particularly to machines such as that disclosed in the patent to C01'- nelius B. Corcor'an, No. 1,105,184, dated July 28, 1914.
In said patent, use is made of a carriage of considerably greater width than usual, having a platen of such length that when the carriage is moved to one of its limiting positions, a sufficient length of the platen to receive the work-sheet will extend to one side of the printing point to enable a guide plate or deflector at the side of the machine to be utilized in directing a work-sheet to the front of the platen.
In carrying out this invention, the usual rear feed-rolls at the bottom of the platen may be omitted, and the levers usually contro ling such rear feed-rolls may be utilized to control the position of a paper-guide pivoted at the rear of the platen, provision bein made of springs urging the front feedro ls and paper-guide toward the platen, and a cast-off mechanism to release said front feed-rolls and the paper-guide.
In order to guide front-inserted worksheets downward at the front of the platen, and to prevent the downward passage of such sheets in front of the forward edge of the paper-guide, a front guide plate or deflector the length of which is commensurate with the width of the work-sheets to be inserted, is pivoted on one side of the machine forward of said platen, so that it may be swung to and from a position to co-operate with the'platen and overlie the front edge of the paper-guide when the latter is in released position.
As herein disclosed, the deflector is pivoted to swing about an axis beneath the same, and a spring is attached to the deflector and to a fixed part of the machine, in such manner that when the deflector is moved in either direction (that is, away from either of its extreme positions), it will be opposed by the spring until it has passed the middle point of its path when the spring will become effective to assist in completing such movement.
It will be understood that before inserting a work-sheet from the front of the machine, the feed-rolls and paper-guide are to be released or withdrawn from the platen and the guideplate or deflector then swung to the rear, so that its rear edge will overlie the forward edge of the paper-guide. In view of this condition, provision is made of a cam member on the deflector near its front edge, having a dwell ortion throughout the greater part of its ength to co-operate with the carriage when the latter is traveling therepast to maintain the deflector in its forward position, and an inclined portion at its outer end, so that when the carriage is moved to its limiting position the deflector may be shifted to the rear, and upon movement of the carriage away from its limiting position the deflector will be swung to .the front.
In order that the inner edge of the sheet may pass readily between the adjacent wingscale and the platen when the carriage is shifted to a position for printing after the insertion of the sheet at the front of the platen, the outer end of the wing-scale may be given a slight outward'flare, and the deflector may be provided with a projection at its inner end and at its rear edge, so as to press the inner edge of the work-sheet closer to the platen to insure the passage of the inner edge of the work-sheet behind the wing-scale when the carriage is shifted to a position to enable typewriting on the sheet inserted.
Suitable means may also be provided for gaging the position of a work-sheet inserted from the front.

"4, extending from one end of the platen frame to the other at the rear, and a connecting rod 5 extending from one end of the platen frame tothe other below the platen. Said platen frame 3 forms part of a carriage 6, which is supported at the front by means of a roll 7 thereon, projecting into a recess 8 in a front rail 9, and at the rear by a rail 10. I
Secured to bar 4 by means of screws 11. are brackets '12 having loops' 13 in which a rod 14 is supported. Pivotally supported .on this rod is a paper-guide 15 extending downwardly and forwardly to the platen around which it curves to the front thereof, forming a paper-table at the rear of the platen and an apron beneath the platen. Also mounted on rod 14 is an extension l6 of the paper-gnide-normally extending in an upward and rearward direction, and so supported on rod 14 that it may be swung in a forward direction to give access to the c back of the .machlne.
Said extension 16 may be provided with apertures 16 to render the screws 11 accessible when the extension 16 is in its normal position. Inor'der to support the paper-guide 15 on the rod 14, loops 17 are pressed outwardly from the paper-guide 15' to receive the rod 14, thus furnishing a pivotal support for said paperguide 15. V. The connection of the extension 16 with the rod 14 is obtained by means of tongues 18 extending from the forward edge of the extension, and forming loops bending around said rod 14.
Mounted on rod 5 are levers 19, supporting in open bearings at their forward ends a shaft 20 on which are, mounted one or more front feed-rolls 21. Pivotally mount-' ed on brackets 22, fixed on said rod 5 and extending rearwardly therefrom, are levers 23, the rear ends of which pass between the paper-guide 15 and the offset ends 24 of strips 25 secured to sald paper-guide, the forward ends of levers 23 being bent so as to pass beneath pins 26 on levers 19 and below and upward at the front of rod 5. A spring 27 interposed between an offset 28 on eachof levers 19 and a fixed part' of the platen carriage, urges the front rollsi21 toward the platen and the paper-guide15 to its normal position.
When it is desired to release or cast off the feed-rolls either for the introduction of shaft 30, and, by means of an arm 31 thereon and a link 32 connecting said arm 31 with an arm 33 on a release or cast-ofi' shaft 34, rocks said cast-off shaft from its Figure 2 position to its Figure 3 position, so that the flat faces 35 on the cast-off shaft no longer contact with the levers 23, which are now engaged by the outer portions of said shafts, thereby casting off the feed-rolls 21 and concomitantly releasing or withdrawing downwardly the paper-guide 15. It will be seen that when the cast-olfshaft 34 is turned into its Figure 3 position, the feedrolls 21 and paper-guide 15 will be locked in their released or withdrawn positions.
In order to guide the lower edge of a work-sheet to be inserted at the front ofthe platen downwardly at'the rear of the front edge of the paper-guide 15 and to prevent passage of the work-sheet in front of said paper-guide 15, provision is made of a guide plate or deflector. 36 having downwardlyturned ears 37, which are pivotally supported by means of shouldered screws 38 on the turned-back ends of the bracket 39, of which the inner end 40 is secured to the righthand frame of the machine by means of screws 41.
For the purpose of assisting in maintaining the outer end of said bracket 39 in 'posi-- tion, provision is made of acurved brace 42 connected with the machine frame near the front by a screw 43, and at its other\ end by a screw 44 to said bracket 39.
As shown in Figures 2 and 3, the forward and rearward limiting positions of the deflector 3.6 are determined by engagement of said deflector with either the front or the rear edges of the offset'ends of bracket 39. The deflector 36 may be maintained in either forward or rearward position. Provision is made of a spring 45 connected at its upper end to an car 46 on the deflector 36, and at its lower end to a pin 47 on the bracket 39. A finger-piece 48 is secured, by means of the right-hand screw 38 and a pin 48*,
to the adjacent ear 37 of the'deflecto r 36 to move the deflector from either one of its limiting positions to the other. i
In practice, the paper-guide 15 and feedrolls 21 are first released or withdrawn concomitantly by depressing the finger-piece 29 and then, by raising the finger-piece 48, the deflector 36 is swung to the rear to overlie and co-operate with the forward edge of the paper-guide 15, as indicated in Figure 3. In this effective or sheet-guiding position of the deflector 36 its rear margin overlies or overlaps upon the forward edge of the depressed paper-guide 15, thereby effectually preventing the possibility of the bottom edge of the downwardly-inserted work-sheet passing at the outside of or catching upon the paper-guide 15. In order to prevent shifting of the deflector 36-t-o its rearward position before the carriage has been moved into position to co-operate with the deflector, and to insure withdrawal of the deflector when the carriage is moved away from its limiting position, provision is made of a cam indicated in general at" 49 and comprising a dwell portion 50, in the form of an upstanding ledge extendin along the greater portion of its length, and an inclined portion 51 at its outer end. Should the carriage 6 be moved to the left from its right-hand position while the deflector 36 is at its rearward or effective position, the carriage end will engage first the inclined cam portion 51 and then-the dwell portion 50, thereby moving the deflector 36 sufficiently forward that such forward movement to the fully ineffective position of the deflector 36 will be completed by its spring 45. It will be evident that, when the right-hand end of the carriage overlies the dwell portion 50, movement of the deflector 36 to its rearward position willbe prevented. Since also the right-hand end of the carriage may ride off the inner end of the dwell portion 50, it may be desirable to providean inclined portion 52 in order to prevent inconvenience to the typist and damage to the machine which might otherwise result from the impact of the carriage frame against the inner end of the cam, in case the deflector 36 should have become moved to its forward position. case, the carriage end will override the inclined cam portion 52 and dwell portion 50 and will impart suflicient forward movement to the deflector 36 that its spring 45 can complete this movement to the fully ineffective position of the deflector 36.
After bringing the platen to the proper position and casting off the feed-rolls and thepaper-guide, the deflector 36 may be swung to its rearward'position. A worksheet may then be introduced at the front of the platen after gaging the inserted sheet by means of a forward or leading-edge gage 53at the top and a side-edge gage 54 at the inner end of the table 55. which, when in position for use, is substantiallytangential to the platen.
Said table 55 is supported on arms 56 rotatably mounted on a rod 57 journaled in brackets 58 on the platen frame, said arms 56 being normally held against turning on rod 57 by means of cylindrical keys 59 pressed by leaf springs 60 into grooves in the rod. In order to insure the proper introduction into the writing field of a work-sheet,
inserted at the front of the platen, the usual wing-scale 62, on the side adjacent the deflector 36, is given a slight flare away from the platen at its outer end, and provision.
is made of a cam-projection or cam-member 63 at the rear edge of the deflector 36 and at the inner end thereof, the cam-member 63 pressing the inner edge of the inserted sheet close to the platen, as this edge of the sheet passes this cam-member, so that it will readily pass under the flared outer end of the wing-scale 62.
After the insertion of a work-sheet at the front of the platen has been completed, the deflector may be moved to its forward position, by depressing the finger-piece 48, and the finger-piece 29 returned to its normal or raised position, to permit the feedrolls 21 and paper-guide 15 to return to their effective positions. urging the feed-rolls 21 and paper-guide .15 to their normal positions, may be of suflicient strength so that, upon restoration of finger-piece 29 to its normal position, the forward portion of the paper-guide 15 will be thrown up with sufficient force to swing the deflector 36 to the front, sufficiently to enable spring 45 to complete the forward movement of the deflector to its forward limiting position.
In Figure 4 is shown a deflector 64 which may be used in place of deflector 36. Said deflector 64 is stationary and consists of a plate having its forward edge down-turned to form a concave portion 65 to receive the forward edge of the paper-guide 15 when the latter is released, the parts being so related that there is no danger .of passing the lower edge of a work-sheet, being introduced from the front, in frontof theouter side of the paper-guide 15, nor of the forward edge of a worksheet, introduced from the rear. catchingon said deflector 64..

1. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor,
a releasable paper-guide extending around the under side of the platen to the front thereof, and a deflector pivotally ifiou'nted on the machine forward of the platen and whollyat one side of the printing point, in such manner as to enable the same to be' swung rearwardly away from the platen and paper-guide to an ineffective position and to be swung from said ineffective position forwardly towards the platen and paper-guide into effective position to co-operate with the paper-guide when the latter is released.
2. In atypewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor,
a releasable aper guide extending around the under Sid machine forward of the. platen and at one side of the printingpoint, so. as to enable the same .to be swung into position to cooperate with the paper-guide when the latter is released, and a spring connected to said deflector and a fixed part of themachine, so that, in passing from one limiting position to the other, the spring will be carried past the axis about which saiddeflector swings and will yieldably hold said deflectorin the position to which it has been moved.
3. In a 'typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor, means to enable insertion of a work-sheet from the front, includin ally monntedforward o the platen to enable the deflector to be swung either to an effective or to an ineffective position, spring means tending-to maintain said deflector in either of said positions, and means whereby movementof the carriage away from a p0sition to enable use of said deflector in connection with said platen will effect a shift ing of said deflector to ineffective position.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor, a paper-guide .extending around the under side of the platen to the front thereof, said paper-guide being pivoted on the carriage at the rear of the platen, a rod fixed on said carriage beneath said platen and parallel therewith, front feed-rolls to co-operate with said platen, means for supporting said feedrolls, including levers pivoted on said rod,
brackets fixed on said rod, levers pivoted on said brackets and having their rear endsconnected with said paper-guide, and means, including cams to act on said last-mentioned levers, to withdraw said front feed-rolls and said paper-guide from said platen.
7. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor, a releasable paper-guide on said carriage extending around the under side of the platen to the front thereof, means to move the forward edge of said paper-guide away from -said,platen to enable a work-sheet to be.
inserted from the front, and a deflector pivotall mounted on the machine at one side of tlie printing point, so that when said deflector is in its rearmost position, its rear edge will overlie the front edge of the paperguide when the latter is moved away from said platen, thereby preventing the worksheet from' being inserted in front-of the front edge of the paper-guide.
8. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor, a paper-guide on said carriage extending around the lower side of said platen to the front thereof, means whereby the front portion ofsaid paper-guide'may be withdrawn from said platen, a deflectorpi'votally .mounted on the machine at one-side thereof,

In a typewriting machine, in combination,- a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor, a paper-guide on said carriage extending around the lower side of'said platen to the front thereof, means whereby the front portion of said paper-guide may be withdrawn from said platen, a deflector pivotally mounted on the machine at one side thereof, so that when swung to the rear, its rear'edge will overlie the withdrawn front edge of said paper-guide to facilitate the front insertion of a work-sheet, and means, including a cam, whereby, if said deflector is in its rearward position, movement of said carriage to one side of the machine from a position to enable use of said deflector, will cause engagement of said carriage with said deflector and consequent movement of the latter to its forward position.
10. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble, platen, a carriage therefor, a paper-guide on said carriage extendin around the lower portion of said platen to the front thereof, means to facilitate the insertion of a sheet from the front, including a deflector pivotally mounted on said machine, so that when swung to the rear, the rear edge of said deflector may overlie the front edge of said paper-guide and thereby prevent the insertion of the work-sheet in front of the front edge of said paper-guide,
' and means whereby movement of said carriage from the position to enable use ofsaid deflector will effect, in case the deflector is in its rearward position, movement of the same from said rearward'position.
11. In a typewriting machine,- in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor, a paper-guide on said carriage extending around the lower portion ofsaid platen to the front thereof, means to facilitate the insertion of a sheet from the front, including a deflector pivotally mounted on said machine, so that when swung to the rear, the rea edge of said deflector may overlie the front edge of said paper-guide and thereby prevent the insertion of the work-sheet in front of said front edge of said paperguide, and co-operating, portions of said carriage and deflector whereby, in case the deflector is in its rearward position, movement ofsaid carriage from the position to enable use of said deflector will effect a movement of the deflector from its rearward position. a D
12. In a typewriting machine, in comb nation, a revolubleplaten, a carriage therefor,
a paper-guide forming apaper-table at the rear of the platen and an apron beneath the platen to direct, work-sheets inserted from the rear to and around said platento the front thereof, means to enable the insertion of a work-sheet from the front of the platen, including a deflector pivotally mounted on one side of the machine forward of said platen, and a spring attached to said deflector and to'a fixed part of said machine, so that upon movement of the de flector past its central position, the spring will act to draw said deflector to its forward or inactive position, or to its rearward oractive position to facilitate such insertion of the work-sheet at the front of the platen.
13. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, acarriage therefor, means to enable the insertion of, a worksheet atthe front of the platen, including a deflector on a fixed part of the machine forward of the platen and at .one side of the printing point, and a cam-projection at the inner end of said deflector to guide the in-' ner edge of the work-sheet close to said platen, and thereby insure a proper entrance of the work-sheet into the machine when the carriage is shifted to carry the inner edge of the work-sheet to and past the printing point. r

In a typewriting machine, in combina-' tion, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor, means to enable a work-sheet to be inserted at the front of the platen when said carriage is at one side of the machine, including a bracket extending laterally from the -machine at one side thereof, and having an oifset portion with a flat top, a deflector piv-.
oted on said bracket so as to be movable to I positions in contact with either the front or I rear edge of the offset portion of said bracket, and a spring connected to the deflector and to a fixedpart of the machine below the axis about which said deflector is tor toward and away from said platen,
means, including ,a finger-piece, to shift the deflector from one limiting position to the other, and means to maintain said deflector in either of its limiting positions.
16. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor, means to facilitate the introduction of a work-sheet at the front of the platen when the carriage is moved to one side of the ma chine, including a deflector pivoted for movement to a forward ineffective position or a rearward effective position, and a cam on said deflector substantially co-extensive therewith and having a lift portion at its outer end and a dwell portion, whereby a movementof the carriage away from a position to co-operate with said deflector will insure an ineffective positioning of said deflector during movement of the carriage to bring the work-sheet thereon into position to be written upon.
17 In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor, means to facilitate the introduction of a work-sheet at the front of said platen when the carriage is moved to one side of the machine, including a deflector pivoted for,
mounted to move to and from an effective position to direct a work-sheet to said platen, means to enable a relative movement of said platen and said deflector transversely of the machine, to bring into register or withdraw therefrom the deflector and a portion of the platen to receive the work-sheet from said deflector, and means to insure an- I ineffective positioning of said deflector during such relative movements.
19. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carria e therefor, a paper-guide extending from t e rear around the lower part of the platen to the front thereof, feed-rolls to co-operate with the lower part of said platen, spring means to maintain the feed-rolls and paperguide in co-operative relation with said platen, cast-off .means to overcome said spring means and release said feed-rolls and said paper-guide, a deflector at one side of the machine pivotally mounted to swing about an axis beneath the same to and from a position such that its rear edge will overlap the front edge of said paper-guide, and a spring connected to said deflector and to a fixed part of the machine below said axis, so as to tend to throw the deflector to one of its limiting positions, the spring means controlling the feed-rolls and paper-guide being of s'uflicient strength that when the cast-off means is rendered ineffective, the movement of the front edge of the paper-guide will swing the deflector forwardly to a suflicient extent to enable the spring to carry it to its forward position.
20. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor, means to co-operate with said platen in feeding a work-sheet therearound, includlng a paper-guide extending around the lower part of sad platen to the front thereof, and feed-rolls adjacent the lower part I wardly from the forward edge of said deflector to co-operate with a part of the carriage to prevent shifting of said deflector to the rear when said part of the carriage is above said ledge, and means to prevent obstruction of said part of the carriage by an end of said. ledge when the carriage is ingved to bring said part thereof above the e ge.
21. In a typewriting machine, incombina tion, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor, means for inserting a work-sheet at the back of the platen and feeding the same to the printing point, including feed-rolls at the lower part of the platen, and a paper-guide extending from therear to said platen and around the lower portion to the front thereof, means to cast off said feed-rolls and paper-guide, means to facilitate the insertion of a work-sheet at the front of the platen, including a deflector at one side of the machine. pivotally mounted so as to be movable to the rear to co-operate with the forward edge of the released paper-guide, and gaging means to determine the position of worksheets introduced .at the front of the platen.
22. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor, a releasable paper-guide extending around the under side of the platen to the front thereof, a wing-scale to co-operate with the platen at one side of the printing point, and a deflector pivotally mounted upon the machine forward of the platen at the same side of the printing point as the said wing-scale and outward therefrom in such manner as to enable the deflector to be swung forwardly into effective position to co-operate with the paper-guide or to be swung rearwardly to an ineffective position.
23. In a typewriting machine, in combination, .a revolubleplaten,..a carriage therefor, means to enable the insertion of a worksheet from-the front including a deflector pivotally mounted forward of the platen to enable the deflector to be swung either to effective or'ineflective position. and spring means tending to maintain said deflector in either of its said positions.
24. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor, a paper-guide forming an inclined papertable at the rear of the platen and extending around the under side of the platen to the front thereof to form an apron beneath the platen, said paper-guide being pivoted on the platen into a position in which its for ward edge is adjacent and beneath the forward edge of a sheet-guiding deflector, a front feed-roll to co-operate with the platen and mounted to be withdrawn therefrom, manually-operable means for concomitantly withdrawing from the platen said paperguide and feed-roll, and means providing for the insertion of a work-sheet downwardly at the front of the platen between the platen and the withdrawn paper-guide and feed-roll, comprising a sheet-guiding deflector having its forward edge overlying the forward edge of the withdrawn paper-guide to co-operate therewith.
25. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor, a releasable paper-guide forming an inclined paper-table at the rear of the platen and forming an apron beneath the platen to direct work-sheets inserted from the rear to and around beneath the platen to the front thereof, means providing for the insertion of a work-sheet downwardly at the front of the platen between the platen and the released paper-guide, comprising a sheetguiding deflector co-operative with the forward edge of the released paper-guide, and
manually-operable means to release said paper-guide from the platen and to move it into a position in which its forward edge cooperates with said deflector to form a guide therewith for said front-inserted work-sheet.
26. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor, a releasable paper-guide forming an inclined paper-table at the rear of theplaten and forming an apron beneaththe platen to direct work-sheets inserted from the rear to and around beneath the platen to the front thereof, said paper-guide being pivoted on the carriage at the rear of the platen so as to be swung downwardly on its pivot to withdraw fromthe platen to its released position, means providing for the insertion of a work-sheet downwardly at the front of the platen between the platen and the forward edge of the released paper-guide, compris-- ing a sheet-guiding deflector co-operative with the forward edge of the released paperguide, and manually-operable means for swinging said paper-guide downwardly on its pivot away from the platen to a released.
