exact description.
This invention relates to paper cutting machines and relates to a corner cutting gauge designed particularly as an attachment for flat paper cutting machines.
In cutting label corners and the like, it is customary at the present time for the operator to lay out a sample from which the label corners are cut. This method is not only dangerous but tedious, inaccurate and consumes time and labor in the adjustment of the stack with respect to the knife. Here tofore separate machines have been provided .for the purpose but are objectionable due to" the high cost and the amount of room necessary for their installation.
a It is therefore the primary objectof the present invention to overcome the above recited objections by providing a simple and inexpensive gauge in the nature of an attachment for aflat paper cutting machine which isadapted to be associated with the back gauge of a machine of this type for accurately positioning and retaining th stack relative to the knife.
Another obj ect of the invention is to provide a gauge of the character described which when associated with the back gauge of a paper cutting machine, is universally adjustable with respect thereto whereby to obtainvarious angular corner cuts.
A further object of the invention resides inthe provision of a vertically yieldable means which co-acts with the clamp of the machine to compensate for the compression of the, paper stack when engaged by said clamp.
The invention also contemplates a gauge of the character described which is so con- \structed as to permit of the use of one or more gauges in connection with a single paper cutting machine; whereby a plurality of' stacks may be simultaneously out upon each operation of said machine.

An expansion clamp is provided on one of the lugs 14 and consists of the relatively separable members 15 which are pivoted at 16 and normally separated by means of a coiled expansion spring 17 interposed therebe tween. The said members 15 are designed to frictionally engage the confronting side faces'of two adjacent fingers G for associating the base with the backgauge' and retaining the same in place. A vertical bearing opening 18 is provided in the'base concentric t the semi-circular wall 12 and the arcuate slot 13 and the same is designed to receive the trunnion 19 of an arm 20. The arm is apertured as at 21, said aperture aligning with the arcuate slot for the reception of the shanks 22 of an adjusting bolt 23. The lower end of the bolt 23 is headed as at 24, said head being received in the enlarged portion of the arcuate T-shaped slot 13. The free reduced extremity of the shank 22 is threaded for the reception of a knurled nut 25. By this arrangement it will be appreciated that the free extremity 26 of the arm is radially adjustable with respect to the semi-cirtular wall of the base and is capable of being secured in any of its adjusted positions. The free extremity 26 is vertically apertured as at 27 for the reception of the threaded shank 28 of a screw 29. A gauge head 30 is adapted to be pivotally associated with the free extremity 26 of the arm and to this end a boss 31 is provided having a vertical threaded aperture 32 which receives the threaded shank of the screw 29. The head 30 is provided with right angularly disposed wings 30 having vertical dove tailed grooves 32 in the inner faces thereof. A vertically yieldable plate 33 is carried by each wing 30 and the same is associated therewith by means of a dove tailed tongue 3a through its engagement with the dove tailed groove 32. In order to provide means for normally elevating the plates 33, the outer surfaces of the wings 30" are each provided with a lug 35 cast or otherwise provided thereon and having a vertical threaded recess 36 communicating with the upper face thereof; The plates 33 are provided with a similar lug 37 projecting outwardly from the outer face.
and disposed in superposed relation with respect to the lugs 35. The lug 37 is provided with a bore 38therethrough in vertical alignment with the recess 36 of the lug 35. A bolt 39 is received by the bore 38 and its lower threaded extremity 40 engages the threads of the recess 36. The head 41 of the bolt is disposed within the enlarged portion A2 of the bore 38 and a coiled expansion spring 43 surrounds the bolt 39 with its op- .posite ends respectively engaging the under surface of the lug 37 and the upper surface I of the lug 35. .By this arrangement the plates are normally elevated and are capable of being depressed for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth. The head 41 ofv the bolt limits the relative separation of the plates from theewings 31 and the engagement of its threaded extremity with the recess 36 permits of a limited adjustment of the bolt for varying the normal elevation of the plates 33. After a trial out has been made and proven satisfactory, a stack of labels L are arranged with one corner thereof disposed between the wings 3O and the plates 33. In operation of paper cutting machines of this type the clamp F is advanced against the stack to compress the same prior to and in advance of the knife. In order to compensate for the compression of the stack or pile and at the same time afford a gauge for the stack prior to its compression, use was 'made of the yieldable plates 33. Therefore the upper labels of the stack are normally disposed below the upper edge of the plates 33. When the clamp is advanced against the plates they are depressed with the stack, by the engagement of the clamp F therewith. The knife then shears the corners of the stack of labels. The stack may then be removed and reversed with the cut corner disposed between the wings and the plates to permit of the cutting of its opposite corner.
Where the cut is exactly 45 a single adustment of the gauge will serve to permit of the cutting of all four corners. However when the cut is more or less than 45, it will be'necessary to make two adjustments or require the use of two gauges. As many gauges may be used in connection with one machine as there is room for the same and when so employed a plurality of stacks may be cut simultaneously. By loosening both the nut 25 and the screw 29 a'universal adjustment of the head 30 may be had. From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawin s it is thought that the nature, purpose aiid operation of the device will be fully understood and while a single and preferred embodiment of the invention is set forth, it is understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise details of construction as variations and modifications falling with- 1n the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to when found expedient.

A device for positioning and retaining a stack of paper on a paper cutting machine to permit of the cutting of the corners therefrom, including a baseadapted to be detachably associated with the back gauge, a paper stack corner embracing head universally associated with the base for relative adjustments thereto, said embracing head comprising integral right angularly disposed wings having dovetailed slots in their inner faces, vertically yieldable plates having dovetailed tongues arranged in the grooves, vertically aligned lugs extending outwardly from the plates and wings, means interposed between said lugs for normally elevating the plates with respect to the wings, and means for limiting the elevation of said plates.
2. A device for positioning and retaining a stack of paper on a paper cutting machine to permit of the cutting of the corners therefrom, including abase adapted to be detachably associated with the back gauge, a paper stack corner embracing head universally associated with the basefor relative adjustments thereto, said embracing head comprising integral right angularly disposed wings having dovetailed slots in their inner faces, vertically yieldable plates having dovetailed tongues arranged in the grooves, vertically aligned lugs extending outwardly from the plates and Wings, means interposed between said lugs for normally elevating the plates with respect to the wings, and adjustable means for limiting the elevation of said plates.

A device of the character described comprising a base adapted'to be supported by the table of a paper cutting machine and detachably associated with the back gauge and a paper stack corner embracing head having universal connection with the base, said head having a corner receiving notch in its outer end provided with vertically arranged right angularly disposed guide faces, vertically yieldable plates carried by said head and having their inner faces disposed in a plane corresponding to the guide faces of the notch, outwardly projecting lugs provided respectively on the plates and on the head, means interposed between said lugs for normally elevating the plates, and a connection between said lugs for limitingthe relative separation 'of the same.

A device of the character described comprising a base adapted to be supported by the table of a paper cutting machine and detachably associated with the back gauge and a paper stack corner embracing head having universal connection with the base said head having a corner receiving notch in its outer end provided with vertically arranged right angularly disposed guide faces, vertically yieldable plates carried by said head and having their inner faces disposed in a plane corresponding to the guide faces of the notch, outwardly projecting lugs provided respectively on the plates and on the head, means interposed between said lugs for normally elevating the plates, and a connection between said lugs for limiting the relative separation of the same, said connection being adjustable to permit of an adjustable limitation in the movement of said plates as and for the purpose specified.
