IMPROVEMENT IN PLANlNG-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.140,235, dated June 24, 1873 application tiled June 15, 1872.

To all whom fit may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES ATKINS, of Augusta, in the county of Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented a new Improvement in Flaming-Machines, of which the following is a specification:

My invention consists of a construction and arrangement of the presser-bar, whereby it is made seltadjusting to the varying thickness of the lumber, and so thatthe edge next the cut will be legit in such nearness thereto while shifting to the said different thicknesses as to serve the purpose of a chip-breaker.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of part of a planingmachine with myimproved presser, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line :r a' of Fig. 1.

A is the planer-cylinder; B, the bed-plate; C,the feed-rollers5 l), the plank being planed 5 and E is the aforesaid presser, which has a curvature, in the face F fronting the cylinder A, of the radius ot the said cylinder, so that the lower edge G extends considerably under the planer-cylinder P. In this example the said presser has two journals, H, on each end, each having a friction-wheel, I, on it, and said journals and wheels project into the inclined slots K of a stand, L, on each side of the niachine, the said slots being so inclined that, as j the presser rises and falls to the lumber of dierent thicknesses, the edge G will be moved from and toward the cylinder` in about the saine inclination as the slope ofthe cut in the board at M, as indicated by the dotted line w, thus keeping the said edge G so near the cut as to serve as a chipfbreaker. rlhe lower journals of the presser are connected by rods N With springs O below to cause the presser to bear with sufficient pressure.

Instead of having the journals on the presser with rollers working in the fixed stands L, I may have plates in the form of these stands attached to the ends of the presser, with similar slots in the outsides working over rollers mounted on journals attached to fixed supports: the result will be the saine.

Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the obliquely -slotted guide stands or plates L with the presser-bar E, constructed as described.
