To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN NIERADKA, a citizen of'the United States, residing at Detroit in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Wrenches and Pipe Cutters, of which the following is a specification:
' This invention relates to a combination wrench and pipe cutter, and it has for a general object to provide a tool in which a pipe wrench, monkey wrench, and pipe cutter are conveniently combined.
More specifically the invention has for an 5 object to combine the pipe cutter with the wrench jaws in a manner to be clamped upon the work by the latter.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation of a combination tool constructed according to the invention,
Fig. 2 is an edge View thereof,
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings 10 indicates a main frame element having formed integrally on opposite sides of the upper end thereof a pair of jaws 11 and 12 the former of which has its face formed in the usual manner for the fixed jaw of a pipe wrench, while the latter constitutes the fixed jaw of a monkey wrench.
Extending longitudinally through this frame element 10 is an aperture 13 in which is slidably received a shank 14 having provided on its upper end a head 15 whose opposite ends constitute a pair of jaws 16 and 17 complementary to the jaws 11 and 12 and forming the adjustable jaws of the wrench. The aperture 13 and shank 14 are preferably constructed, as is usual, of rectangular shape in cross-section.
Formed in, and extending completely from edge to edge through, the upper part of the shank 14 is a recess 20 which also extends outwardly through the head 15 and partially through the face of the jaw 16, this recess accommodating the pipe cutter.
This pipe cutter comprises a main blade 21 hinged at one end on a pin 22 carried by the head 15. This blade has an arm 23 extending from its pivot point toward the outer end of recess 20 and terminating in a finger 24 which projects slightly beyond the head 15. This arm 23 is adapted to be engaged on opposite sides by a pin 25 removably carried in the head 15 directly outwardly of the pivot pin 22 to hold the blade 21 in operative or inoperative position, the arm 23 having a pair of lugs 26 on opposite sides thereof which partially surrounc. the pin 25. A cotter-pin 27 may be passed through the end of this pin 25 to hold it in place.
Pivotally connected at one end as at 28 to the main blade 21 of the pipe cutter a short distance from the pivot point is a sec ond blade 29, the cutting edges of these blades being formed in the manner usual to pipe cutting tools. Cooperative'with this blade 29 in a manner to be later set forth is a roller 30 mounted on the end of an arm 31 fixed on a pin 32 pivoted in the frame element 10, which latter is formed with a recess 33 to receive the said arm and roller when not in use, the pin 32 having a projecting knurled head whereby it may be swung from one position to another.
To provide for adjustment of the shank 14 in the frame element 10 to move the jaws 16 and 17 toward or away from the jaws 11 and 12 the shank is provided with a screw extension 35 which projects through the end of frame element 10 and engages in a threaded boring 36 in a handle 37 swiveled on the end of the frame element.
The means which 1 have here illustrated for connecting the handle to the frame element comprises a diminished extension 33 of circular cross-section formed on the end of the latter and having a peripheral flange 39 on its outer end. This extension projects into an annular recess 40 in the end of the handle, and a ring 41 is located in said recess and secured to the handle by screws 42, this ring engaging the flange 39 to prevent withdrawal of the handle.
.Vhen the device is to be used as a wrench the parts occupy the position shown in Fig. 3 with the blades 21 and 29 located entirely within the confines of the recess 20 in the shank 14 and the roller 30 in the recess 33 in the frame element 10, the movable jaws 16 and 17 being adjusted toward the fixed jaws 11 and 12 by rotating the handle 37 on the frame element as desired, the device being used either as a pipe wrench or monkey wrench as desired.
When the device is to be used as a pipe cutter the pin 25 is first withdrawn from the head 15 sufliciently to allow the blade 21 to be swung to the position shown in Fig. 1, the blade 29 also being swung out of the recess 33, whereupon the pin is reinserted to keep the blades from falling back. The roller 30 is then swung up to a position resting against the shank 14 and the blade 29 allowed to fall back, the parts all assuming the position shown in Fig. l, in which position, it will be noted, the back of blade 29 is inclined to the front edge of the shank.
The pipe, indicated at 50, is then inserted between the blades 21 and 29 and handle 37 rotated to draw the head 15 toward the frame element 10, wedging the roller 30 between the shank 14: and the blade 29 and causing the latter to grip the pipe. The whole implement is then swung around the pipe in a well-known manner, the handle 37 being slowly rotated to keep the cutter blades tightly gripping the pipe until the latter is cut through.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. In a combination implement of the type described, a frame element, an adjustable wrench jaw, means for adjusting said jaw, a pipe cutter carried by said adjustable jaw and comprising a pair of hinged blades, and a member carried by said frame element and adapted to bear against one of the said blades, the said movable jaw forming an abutment for the other.
2. In a combination implement of the type described, a frame element, an adjustable wrench jaw, means for adjusting said jaw,
a pipe cutter carried by said adjustable jaw and comprising a pair of hinged blades, and a member carried by said frame element and adapted to bear against one of the said blades, the said movable jaw forming an abutment for the other blade, said member comprising an arm hinged to said frame element, and a roller on the end of said arm.
in a combination implement of the type described, a frame element, a shank slidable therein, a jaw head on said shank, said shank and jaw head having a recess formed therein, a pipe cutter comprising a main blade hinged to said shank in the said recess and an auxiliary blade hinged to the main blade, means for holding said main blade in different positions, and a member movably carried by the said frame element and adapted to be moved against said shank or into a re cess in the said frame element, for the purpose set forth.
a. In a combination implement of the type described, a frame element, a shank slidable therein, a j aw head on said shank, said shank and jaw head having a recess formed therein, a cutter blade hinged in said recess and having an extending arm, and a pin removably carried in said jaw head for holding said arm in different positions.
5. In a combination implement of the type described, a frame element, a shank slidable therein, a jaw head on said shank, said shank and jaw head having a recess formed therein, a cutter blade hinged in said recess and having an extending arm, and a pin removably carried in said jaw head for holding said arm in different positions, said arm having a finger formed thereon and projecting from the saidrecess, for the purpose set forth.
