To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALoNzo CONNELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Transmitter Devices for .Telephones and Dictaphones, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to a sanitary transmitter device for telephones and dictaphones, and the object ofthe invention is the construction of a simple and efiicient device that goes over the mouthpiece of a telephone or dictaphone, which will completely close the mouthpiece, at the will of the operator,

preventing dust or disease germs from entering the mouthpiece while the instrument is not in use and which device can'be quickly removed for cleaning or washing the same.

With this and'other objects in view, my invention comprises certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter described, illus trated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of a device the present invention, and showing the same on the mouthpiece of a telephone.

Figure 2 is a vertical, central, sectional view through one of my devices, on the mouthpiece of a telephone or dictaphone.

Figure 5 is an enlarged, fragmentary, sectional view of the outer casing of the device.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the mouthpiece of a telephone or dictaphone, in which is positioned the inner casing 2 of my device. This casing 2 is provided near its inner end with an apertured disc 3, partly closing the inner end of the inner casing 2; this apertured disc will assist in catching or retaining dust or germs that may pass into the inner casing 2.

The outer casing 4 surrounds the outer end of the mouthpiece 1 and by means of screws 5 the device is detachably secured upon the mouthpiece. wardly of the screws 5, until their inner ends clear the mouthpiece 1, the device can be quickly removed off the mouthpiece for enabling the operator to wash the entire device in a suitable antiseptic solution The outer casing By the screwing out- 1 is provided with a central opening partly closed by a wire mesh 6. A rivet 7 extends through the tongue 8 of the cover 9, pivotally mounting the cover upon the front of the outer casing. The cover 9 is provided with a grip 10, which may be grasped by theoper tor. The head 7" of the rivet 7 is slightly elongated to form a cam-like construction at one end, as shown in Figs. 8 and 6. 0n the cover 9, at the tongue 8, is formed a lug 11, which'bears agalnst the cam-like end of the head 7 when the cover is in a closed position preventing the cover.9 from swinging too far to the right of the meshed opening on the outer casing, but by swinging the cover to the left in the direction of the arrow 13, Fig. 3, the instrument can be used by the operator, and, when through, the cover can be moved to its closed position shown in Fig. 3, thereby preventing any disease germs or dust from entering the mouthpiece, greatly minimizing the spread of disease and thereby the saving of life. It is to be noted that the luv 11, bearing against the elongated end of the head 7, acting as a cam venting the cover 9 from swinging too far to the right, after it has been closed, consequently, this lug 11, keeps the cover upon the outer casing, closing the meshed opening thereof when the instrument is not in use. A piece of felt 14, Fig. 5, is placed between the casing 4 and the cover 9, assisting in binding the cover upon the casing against too free a movement.

When the device is in use the cover 9 is normally in closed position. When the operator desires to speak into the mouthpiece he can easily and quickly swing the cover 9 to the position shown in Figure 1. When he desires to move the cover to a closed position he only needs to swing the cover downwardly and when the lug 11 strikes against the cam-like end of the head 7 the motion of the cover will be automatically and instantly stopped and at the time the cover will be in a central position upon the casing 4 and closing the central opening thereof. ong usage will. not impair the or brake, for preproper action of the lug 11 and head/7 so that the action of the cover in closing 1s proper at all times.

It is to be understood that my sanitary de-' vice will not injure the instrument upon which it is used; further, the device can be easily taken apart and sterilized. It is not a collective agent or germ-carrier; it does not carry any offensive odors, as a few drops of spirit of camphor or medicated cotton rubbed on the face of the device will prevent combination of a-casing provided with an opening, a cover on'said casing for closing said opening, a rivet provided with a head pivotally fastening'said'cover to said outer casing, and a lug on said cover and engaging said head for preventing movement of the cover upon the rivet too far in one direction.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing provide'd with a central opening, a rivet provided'with a head, said rivet extending throughsaid cover and through said casing for pivotally mounting; said cover on said casing, said head being elongated to form a cam-like construction at one end, a hip; formed upon said cover contiguous to said head, and said lugbeing adapted to engage the cam-like end of said head for automatically stopping pivotal movement of the cover on the rivet when the cover is over the openingiof the casing, sul stantially as shown and described.
