Be it known that I, JOHN GARDULIZ, citizen of Russia, residing at Sonman, Vin the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and ,useful Improvements in Bail Connections, of which the following is a speciica-tion.
This invention relates to a novel and improved construction .for the joints .of Ytrack rails and it has for an object to .provide a simple and inexpensive arrangement .of pailts for securing together the adjacent rail enc s.
A further object is to .provide .a rail joint in which the usual bolts and nuts are dispensed with, thereby reducing liability of loosening of the joint.
For further comprehensionof the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to .the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which .the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawings is a plan View showing the adjacent rail ends .as constructed accordi-ng to my invention, the rail ends being slightly separated.
Fig. 2 is a side view of vthe parts as shown in Fig. 1, showing also a portion of the roadbed in section.
Fig. 3 is an underside plan view showing the rail ends joined and the' locking pin in position, the operative position of the retaining plate being indicated in dotted lines.

In the drawings the numerals 10 and 11 respectively indicate adjacent track rails whose main lengths are of usual construction, these rails resting on the usual ties 13. In the form shown in Figs. 1 to 4 the rail 11 is tapered at its end to wedge shape as at 14, while the rail 10 is formed with a complementary recess adapted to receive this tapered end. This taper 14 is formed only in the web 11 and foot 11a of the rail, the tread 11b being cut off square at the point where the taper commences.

In one wall of the slot 16 a vertical groove 17, preferably of rectangular cross section, is formed, while a complementary groove 18 is formed in the corresponding wall of the web portion 10c, these grooves registering and jointly :forming a square socket when the rail ends are pushed together as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Into the socket thus formed is inserted upwardly a square pin 20.
This pin20 is prevented from being displaced by a plate 21 which may be slidably carried on the underside ot either oit the rails and is moved along the rail to a posisovv tion under the engaging `rail ends, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, the body of the plate lying in close contact with the foot of the joined rails while the plate is provided with hook-like flanges .22 at the sides which engage over theedges of the foot of the adjacent rail ends and hold the plate.

Formed in the flanges 22`on the plate 21 are recesses 23 which are adapted to receive the heads of spikes whichmay be driven into a tie placed under the rail joint, longitudinal displacement of the plate 21 being thus prevented. The underside of the plate may have transverse recesses 23 formed therein which, in cases where the rail joint is set in concrete, will receive the same and so act to hold the plate against longitudinal movement.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5 the construction corresponds in the main to that already described. In this case however, the wedge-shaped end and correspondingly shaped socket are omitted, the web and foot of the rail 11 being continued beyond the tread and cut olf square, and the web and foot of the rail l0 being correspondingly Vcut olf. The web 11 may have a pair ot` projections 25 which engage in corresponding recesses 26 in the web 10.
In the modification shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the rail ends are cut oli' similarly to the rail'ends shown in Fig. 5. In this construction,.however, the pin 20 is not employed, while the slot 16 in the projecting web does not extendto the bottom thereof, the bottom Wall of this slot having a rectangular aperture 27 'extending therethrough, the web 10 of the rail l0 having a lug 28 Von its bottom adapted to engage in this apen ture when the parts are assembled.
Having thus described my invention wh at I claim as new and desire to protect byLetters Patent of the United States is as folsV lows:V
1. `In a device of the class described, a pair of cooperating rail ends one of which has the web and foot thereof tapered and extending beyond the tread of the rail, the' web and foot of the other rail end having a complementary recess adapted to receive the said tapered extension, said rail ends each having a socket half formed therein and jointly forming a socket, and a locking pin inserted in said socket.

In a device of the class describedga pair of cooperating rail ends one of which has the web and foot thereof tapered and extending beyond the tread of the rail, the web and foot of the other rail end having a complementary recess adapted to receive the said tapered extension, said rail ends each presenting a portion of a vertically split socket, and a locking pin inserted into said socket-` 3.
