Specification of Letters Fatent.

Application filed January 26, 1914, Serial No. 814,422. Renewed November 23, 1915. Serial No. 63,139.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. SHEARER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in railroad ties, and has for its principal object the provision of a tie which will prevent the rail from spreading, sinking or creeping.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a tie in which the resilient qualities of the old type of wood tie are re tained and combined with the advantages which are present in the use of a metallic tie.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel means for securing the rails in place on the tie and preventing the same from becoming displaced.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of a novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a tie constructed in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the rail fastening elements.
Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference the numeral 1 designates as an entirety a tie constructed in accordance with this invention, which preferably comprises a body portion 2, having its lateral and end edges bent downwardly as shown at 3. Near each end of the body portion 2 is preferably provided a rectangular box like structure 4 adjacent which are provided the tongues 5, which are arranged at the side of the box like structure 4 nearest the center, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
A suitable wood filler block 6 is provided and is adapted to seat within the box like structure 4 and to be wedged in by means of the metallic casing designated generally by the numeral 7. This block 6 preferably extends above the upper surface of the body portion of the tie and is adapted to form a seat for the rail indicated by the numeral 8. A suitable spike 9 is driven into the wooden block and is adapted to form the inner flange engaging member of the rail when the device is in place.
The metallic casing 7 preferably comprises the walls 10 which are provided with a suitable slot 11 for use in withdrawing the block from its position. A flange engaging member 12 is formed on one of the walls of the member 7 and is adapted to project outwardly therefrom to form an overlying por tion for the flange of the rail which is to ward the end of the tie.
I It will be clearly seen from the foregoing that when in usethe tie is placed in the de sired position and the wood blocks inserted so that there is a space left between the outer wall of the box-like structure 4; and the block. The member 7 is then placed in the space there formed and it will be evident that the block will be held firmly in place thereby. The rail 8 is then slipped in place with the outer flange thereof beneath the flange engaging member 12 formed on the element 7 and the spike 9 is then driven into the wood block and thus it willbe seen that the rail will be held from accidental displacement. Should it at any time be desirable to remove the block for renewing it will be apparent that by inserting a crowbar or similar leverin the slot 11 and placing a fulcrum block on the tie immediately adjacent the slot that the element 7 may be withdrawn from its position and the wood block slipped from beneath the rail and a new one substituted therefor, thus making the device interchangeable and the wood blocks renewable.
While in the foregoing I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the specific combination and arrangement of parts as fall within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is 1. Arailroad tie comprising the combination with a body portion, of a pair of box like structures formed integral with the body portion near each end, wood blocks adapted to be inserted in the box-like structures, said blocks being of less length than the box-like structures, a rail securing element adapted to be inserted in the space between the end of the wood block and the end walls of the box like structure to firmly hold the block in place, and an extension formed on the rail holding element and adapted to overlie the flange of a railroad rail When the device is in place.
2. In a device of the character described the combination with a body portion, of a box-like structure formed near each end of the body portion, a tongue stamped from and bent up from the body portion, immediately adjacent each of the box-like structures, a wooden block adapted to be inserted in each of the box-like structures and abut each of the tongues, each of said Wood blocks being of less length than the box like structures to form chambers, filling elements adapted to be inserted in the chambers and to firmly hold the wood blocks in place, and flange engaging members formed on the filling elements, and adapted to overlie a rail flange when the device is in use.

In a device of the character described the combination with a body portion, of box like structures formed at each end of the body portion, tongues stamped and bent up from the body portion immediately adjacent the boX like structures, filler blocks adapted to be inserted in the box like structure, said filler blocks forming a rail seat, each of said filler blocks being of less length than the boX like structure in which it is seated, a rail holding element adapted to be inserted in the recess formed between the ends of the filler block and the end wall of the box like structures, said rail holding element having a slot in one side to provide for the removal of the same, and a tongue on the opposite side, -said tongue being adapted to overlie the flanges of a rail and hold the same in place when the device is in use.
