Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. Voern, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pontiac, in the county of Oakland and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to manifolds and has for one of its objects the provision of a unit construction which can be readily manufactured; and further in which the area of the intake passages exposed to the exhaust gases is relatively large whereby the manifold is particularly adapted for use with low-grade fuels. Other objects of the invention reside in the novel arrangement and combination of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.

1 is the casing of substantially hollow rectangular cross section and having the series of exhaust ports 2 and the series of inlet ports 3 in its side wall 4, which has a fiat outer face extending substantially the length of the casing. These exhaust and inlet ports are arranged to register with the exhaust and inlet passageways of the engine when the manifold is secured to the engine by suitable bolts extending through the aligned apertures 5 in the side walls of the casing.
The casing has an opening 6 in one end which is at all times in communication with the exhaust ports 2. The casing also has an opening 7 which is located centrally in the bottom wall, the latter having the diverging portions 8 extending upwardly and outwardly from the opening to the ends of the casing.
9 are passageways within the casing 1 and having their lower ends 10 in the opening 7 and their upper ends 11 in the inlet ports 3. Each passageway is of unit construction and as shown is formed of a plurality of formed tubes which can be welded, brazed or cast. The ends of each formed tube are connected by the intermediate diverging portions 12 and transversely extending portions 13 at the upper ends of the portions 12. The inlet port 3 comprises an aperture 14: of a size to be fitted in by the upper end 11 of the formed tubes which ends are rigidly secured in lace as by welding. The lower ends 7 of the formed tubes are also rigidly secured in place, the specific construction comprising the flange 15 provided with an aperture for the lower end of each tube. This flange is rigidly secured tothe bottom wall of the casing as by being welded thereto and the lower ends of the tubes are rigidly secured vto the flange preferably in the same manner,
the flange and the lower ends of the tubes being secured in place after the upper ends of the tubes have been secured. This flange is adapted for connection with a suitable connection leading to the carburetor whereby the gaseous mixture in being drawn into the engine passes through the series of extruded tubes 9 to the inlet ports 3. The combined area of these tubes which is exposed to the exhaust gases passing from the exhaust ports 2 to the end opening 6 is relatively large so that the gaseous mixture can be properly heated and a low-grade fuel used.
hat I claim as my invention is p 1. A manifold comprising a hollow rectangular body portion provided with a flaring base, ports at one end of said body portion and in said flaring base respectively. inlet and outlet ports in one side wall of said rectangular body portion and unit constructions comprising formed tubes adapted to be inserted through the port in the flaring base to form a communication with the intake ports, the ends ofsaid unit constructions being secured to the port in the flaring base and the intake ports in the side wall, respectively.
2. A one-piece manifold comprising a hollow body portion provided with a flaring base, ports at one end of said body portion and in said base respectively, inlet and outlet 7 ports in one side of said body portion and a passageway comprising a plurality of formed tubes adapted to be inserted through the port in the flaring base and secured at one end thereto and at the other end to an intake port to form a communication therebetween.
3. A one-piece manifold comprising a hollow body portion of rectangular cross section provided with a flaring base terminating in a port, a port formed at one end of said 5 body portion, inlet and outlet ports at one side of said rectangular body portion, and a passageway of unit construction comprising a plurality of formed tubes adapted to be inserted through the port in said base to form a connection between said last-men- 10 tionedport and an intake port in the side Wall.
