T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROY RICHARDSON, a citizen of the United States, resident of Martinsburg, West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snow Eradicators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a snow eradicator for use with locomotives and is designed to melt the snow from the road bed as the locomotive advances along the track.
The invention consists in the features and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the eradicator member by which steam is delivered upon the road bed at the fore part of the locomotive adjacent the pony truck.
Fig. 1 is a detail sectional view of a header forming part of the eradicator structure.
F ig. 1 is a side view of the parts shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view across the boiler with parts shown in elevation and parts broken away.
Fig. 3 is a side view in the, nature of a diagram showing the connection to some of the parts shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail longitudinal section of the valve mechanism and Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the valve of Fig. 4.
In these drawings 1 indicates a grating consisting of a""eiies of steam pipes connected to headers 2 and to this pipe system steam is'supplied through the supply pipes 3 4, so that the steam will be distributed throughout the same to be discharged through the perforations 1 in the under side thereof upon the snow or ice on the roadway causing it to melt away rapidly as the engine proceeds at a moderate rate of speed.
The pipes 1 extend across from one header 2 to the other and shorter pipes 1 are arranged between' the wheels of the pony truck and are connected with the supplemental headers 52% these supplemental headers receiving steam from certain of the pipes 1 Specification of Letters Patent.

and distributing the steam to the shorter plpes. By this construction spaces a and b are left for the accommodation of the wheels of the pony truck.
The steam distributer or rating is of conslderableareaas shown in ig. 1 and as indicated it is supported beneath the fore part of the locomotive by suitable hangers 5 attached to and depending from the pilot board 6 and by other hangers 7 depending from and attached to the saddle frame 8. These hangers'are attached at their lower ends to bars 9 which by coupling loops 10 support the pipes 1.
As before stated the steam is supplied to the pipe system or grating by the pipes 3, 4, and these extend down from valve boxes 11, 12, within the housings 12*, extending from the boiler shell to the steam chests 13. These boxes are provided each with a slide-valve 14 controlling ports 15 which when open allow steam from the dome to pass through the pipes 16 to the steam chests but when these slide valves are adjusted to cut oifthe direct communication between the pipes 16 and the steam chest part of the steam supplied by pipe 16 will flow through by- pass pipe 17, 17 to the steam chest and part will go through the pipes 3, and 4 tothe steam distributer or snow eradicator.
The by- pass pipe 17, 17 is in the form of an upwardly extending loop having at its up per portion a supplemental throttle valve 18 under the control of the engineer through rod 19. The pipes 3 and 4 are supplied with hand operated valves 19 and 20 by which the engineer can regulate the flow of steam through these pipes to the eradicator grating. The slide valves 14 are of special construction, each having a flange 14 guided in a suitable channel in the valve box, as at 14", and having an upwardly extending boss or reduced portion 14 which receives a yoke 14 connected by a rod 21 with a lever 22 which is operated from the engineers cab by a suitable connection 23. The'yoke 14 fits the boss 14 of the valve loosely so that the steam pressure in pipe 16 will act to keep the valve seated. The valve casing is made of two parts 11 and 11 held together by bolts passing through their flanges.
