VALVE-SPRING-COMPRESSING TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented D430, 2?? 1921.
Application filed January 3, 1921, Serial No. 434,470.
State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Valve-Spring-Compressing Tool, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to implements for compressing the valve springs of internal combustion engines.
' The principal object of the invention is to provide a device enabling an operator to compress all the valve springs on the detachable head of valve-in-head motors so that the valve keys may be removed, whereupon the valves themselves may be taken out for re-grinding.
A further object of the inventionis to provide a tool which is well adapted for use in compressing valve springs of other types of motors, such as those which employ valve cages.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, with the understanding,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same showing the spring in the act of being compressed.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation with parts in section showing the spring slightly compressed.
The device employs a support or table 5 providing a base of a size suiiicient to receive thereon a detachable head 6 of a valvein-head motor. This base has an abutment 5 near one longitudinal edge against which the detachable head may be. thrust. At the ends of theabutment 5 are standards 7 which rigidly support a rod 8 parallel to the base 5.
A lever is connected to the rod 8 so that it may slide freely the length of said rod and may swing equallyfreely about the rod as an axis. To permit this, the lever has an eye 9 at one extremity, the other end having a: handle 14:. That portion of the lever ad- ]acent the eye is straight as indicated at 10, and the portion 13 adjacent the handlefis likewise straightand in alinement with the portion 10. Intermediate the portions 10 and 13 the lever'hasan offset portion 12. This ofiset portion is preferably formed by giving a double bend to the lever whereby the offset portion ofthe lever is not arcuate but on the contrary is straight for the greater part of its length. formed integrally with the lever and is bent at an angle to the portion 10 and then in V parallelism with the straight portion of the offset 12. This, arm does not have a length equal to the offset 12 but terminates at such a distance from the offset as well as from the portion 13. that a wide gap is left between 1 the extremity of thearm and the portion 13.
Thus the lever may be said to be forked in- An arm 11-is the straight part of the offset 12 is swung down into engagement with the valve cap 17. This depresses the spring 16 and allows the valve key 18 to be withdrawn. Thereafter the valve itself may be taken out and re-ground. When the-parts are to be reassembled, the spring 16 will be placed about the valve stem 13, then the valve cap 17 will be laid upon the upper end of the spring, whereupon the lever will be swung down to depress the spring so that the key 18 may be replaced.
The base is of sufiicient size to receive all types of detachable heads and the provision springs regardless of any variation in size of said heads. By the use of this device, the
valves of motors having any number of" cylinders are quickly removed with a minimum of trouble. When the valves are in cages it is easy to support them upon the base 5 in such a way that the lever may above the a base and abutment and parallel springathe combination with aisupport, a

portionf said arm lhowever terminating at a point spaced ffrom the lever whereby a gap oropenm'gfis left.

5. The combination with a base, of a lever, and means for pivotally connecting said lever to-said base, said lever being'bent to 'formv an (offset portion intermediate of its ends, and an armintegral With'the lever and terminating at apoint spaced from the; lever, whereby agapor opening is provided at an intermediate point of the lever.
6. The combination with :a fiat base of a size to receive and support the detachable heads of valve-in-head motors, said base having an abutment extending longitudinally thereof-near one edge against'which the detachablehead may be thrust, a rod supported above the baseand abutment and as to belfreely slidableand S vvingable there- ,on, uvhereby it maybe used to compress valve springs to permit Withdrawal orreplacement of the valve keys.
