D. KEHNOHAN. l
HEEL GRI-P FOR SHOES.
APPLICATION msn APR.6,1921.

HEEL-GRIP inenten. l
Application led April 6,
Vinvented certain new and useful improvements Relating to a Heel-Grip for Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to heel grips or friction pads adapted to be tted in shoes for preventing the wearers heels from slipping up and down when walking.
Pads of velvet or like material have been fitted inside the heel parts of shoes for the purpose stated and attempts have also been made to attain the desired object by means of elastic straps provided interiorlyof the shoes at the backs thereof.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved heel grip or friction pad of soft and vyielding material and elastic so constructed as to combine the particular advantages of each as hitherto used and, at the same time, avoid the disadvantage common to elastic straps of lifting with the heel ofthe foot.
Une form of the invention is illustrated, by way of example, on the accompanying draw ing, whereon Figure l is a grip or friction pad embodying my improvements, Fig. 2 is a back view corresponding to Fig. l and Fig. 3 represents a cross section 0n the line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. l is a fragmentary section of a ladys shoe with the device in position therein.
The device shown comprises a back portion a of leather or the like having extended portions a1 adapted to lie on the bottom and against the inside of the shoe at the heel (Fig. 4). The back portiona is slit horizontally for a portion at its center and a covering or strip of soft leather or other suitable material b extends across the front top of the back a. An extension or tongue b1 of the strip b passes from the front through the slit in the back a, to which it is then secured by sewing b2, while the upper edge front elevation `f, a heel ron` snons.

1921. Serial No. 459,059.
- sired tension is obtained, and then fastened -to the side of the device or to the shoe as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
The unsecured top edg allows of the casing formed by the strip o being drawn forward, under the action of the elastic c, against the wearers heel with a firm yet resilient grip` As the elastic is confined in the covering or tube whichis fastened inside the shoe any tendency for the device-to liftwith the heeliof the wearer is l positivelyprevented.
Aparticular advantage of the `arrangement described is that a projecting front edge at the bottom of the fiee center portion of the` casing formed by the strip o is avoided and', in consequence, the device presents a neat appearance and is durable in use. x
When the device is in position the lower portions of the extensions al which rest on the bottom of the heel part are preferably covered by a heel piece b3. Ihe side exten-` sions give support to the side portion of the device and prevent distortion when the elastic is tensioned and they also protect the lining of the shoe at the heel.
Having now fully described my invention what I claim and desireto secure byLetters Patent is l. A heel gri for use in shoes, comprising .a backingof p-iable material formed with a slit therein, a cover` portion havinga tongue secured in engagement with the slit and forming a casing at the top of the backing, and tensioning means in said casing.
2. A. heel grip for use in shoes,'coinprising a backing of pliable material formed with a slitvtherein, a strip of soft and yielding material having a tongue secured in engagement with they lower edge of the slit and formino` a casing at the top of the-backing, and an elastic strip in said casing and securedat one end thereof.'
3.' A heel grip for use in shoes, comprising? a backing of pliable material formed with 1 casing.v
4. A heel gripfor use in slices, comprising a backing of pliable mateal formed Wih elastic Strip in said casing Lamd secured et 10 a slit'theren in peximty to its upper edge one endhereof.
