MASK.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented D800 2'7 11.921,
Application filed February 24, 1921. Serial No. 447,528.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, MICHAL PALIJ, a citizen of Ukraine, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvments in Masks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in masks and has particular reference to a mask for inolosing the face of a person with the edges of the mask intimately contacting the head to seal the face to the atmosphere, and being provided with air or oxygen supply means under control of the wearer of the mask.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a mask embodying a frame adapted to be tightly secured to the head of the wearer with a hinged front plate carried by the frame and including a wall of transparent mica or pyroxylin material, the mask being provided with a manually operable valve to regulate the supply of oxygen or air to the mask While ear capsare carried by the sides of the mask and are provided with hinged covers to permit the application of an absorbent material within the cap from the outer side of the mask.
This invention is especially adapted for use in factories where gases and fumes that are poisonous to a person permeate the atmosphere, the mask being as well adapted for use in mining and for any other purpose desired where it is necessary to protect the face and lungs of a person frompoisonous ases.
With the above general objects in'fview and others that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and in.
which like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views. v
In the drawings, s
Figure 1 is a front elevatlonal view of a mask constructed in accordance with the present invention with the same in opera tive position upon a person as indicated by dotted lines,
' Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevational.
i dining 4. he frame is Sup rted on the view of the mask,
Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof showing the face engaging frame of the mask,
Fig, 4 is a side elevational view of the mask with the hinged front frame moved to its open position as indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view taken on line VV of Fig. 3 showing the needle valve for controlling the supply of oxygen or air to the mask and the padded'e'ar caps at opposite sides of the mask,
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view taken on line VI-VI .of Fig. 4 showing the catch lever vfor holding the hinged frame in fixed position on the mask frame; and
Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view taken on line VII-VII of Fig. 6.
Briefly described, a mask constructed in accordance with this invention embodiesa frame carrying straps adapted for engagement with the head of \a wearer for holding the frame in correct position, the frame embodying a temple engaging section and cheek and chin engaging sections adapted to intimately contact the face of the wearer to prevent the passage of air between the mask frame and the head.
A. front frame is hinged to the frame fixed to the head of the roller and includes a wall of mica or pyroxylin material fully transparent so as not to interfere with the vision of thewearer while an ear-cap is carried by each side of the wall and has a reticulated hinge cover that overlies an absorbent material filling in each cap to rmit the, passage of sound waves and to exc ude gases and t e like. A source of oxygen or fresh air supply has a hose connection with'a needle valve casing carried by the lower end of the hinged section of the mask so that the proper amount of fresh air ma be admitted to the mask for comfort of t e wearer. 7
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated a gas mask embodying a frame adapted for rigid mounting upon the head of the wearer, the frame embod ing a temple section 1 of arched formation as illustrated in Fig. 3. the
it a
same being preferably formed of metal and v having a padding lining 2 of fabric for ongaging the head, the rear ends of the section 1 being connected to the perpendicular check and chin en ging section 3having a fabric head by a series of straps 5 adjustable in length and provided with snap fasteners to enable the mask to be securely placed in position with the sections 1 and 3 of the frame snugly engaging the head of the wearer.
A hinged forward frame is carried by the rigidly mounted frame and embodies an upper arcuate section 6 carrying a central clip having lugs 8 hinged to lugs-9 on the strip 1 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 to 4, the rear edges of the frame 6 being formed integral with the perpendicular frame 10 that overlies the frame 3 when in closed position as shown in Fig. 4. To retain the hinged frame in the closed position shown, a lever 11 is pivotally mounted in lugs 12 carried by the frame section 10 and has the forward bent end 13 thereof projected through registering openings 14 in the overlapped frame sections 3 and 10 as clearly shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the lever 11 being tensioned by the spring 15 to hold the bent end 14 thereof projected through said openings.
An ear cap is carried by each side of the shield section 16 and as shown in detail in Fig. 5, an opening is formed in the side of the shield and covered by a reticulated plate 20 secured to the edges of said opening while a tubular extension wall 21 extends outwardly of the side of the shield 16 and is closed by a hinged reticulatedcover 22 confining an absorbent packing 23 within the tubular extension 21 between said cover and the reticulated plate 20. The "packing material 23 within the ear caps will permit a limitedpassage of sound waves and at the same time will prevent the passage of air through the ear cap to the interior of the mask, therebyinsuring against the ingress of poisonous gases to the mask.
in order to provide for a su ply of oxygen or fresh air to the interior 0 the mask, the
- lower end of the chin portion thereof is provided with bracing frames-24 shown more clearly in Figs. 3 and 5, said frames carry-X ing a perforated plate 25 set in a cut-out portion in the lower end of the mask and carrying a valve block 26 secured as at 27 to the mask with an inlet nozzle 28 having a flexible tube 29 attached thereto as shown in Fig. 1. a screw needle valve 30 being threaded in the block 26 for controlling the admission of oxygen or fresh air to the mask. A
body strap 31 is attached to the body of the wearer as shown in Fig. 1 and carries guide members 32 for supporting the tube 29 in proper posltlon, the tube being of suiiiclent length to extend to a suitable source of oxygen or air supply from a distantly positioned tank, or to a receptacle or tank carried upon the back of the wearer.
In the operation of the device, the mask incloses the face of the head with the straps 5 securely retaining the same in position. Sound waves travel through the ear caps 21 and the supply of air or-oxygen is admitted to the mask under control ofthe valve 30 through the perforated bottom plate 25 to the interior of the mask. Should it be desired to obtain access to the interior of the mask without completely removing the same from the head, the tensioned lever 11 is shifted to displace the bent end 13 from the registering openings in the frame sections 3 and 10 whereupon the forward frame section is permitted to move on its hinge mounting 8, 9 to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 4, thus giving free access to the face of the wearer.
While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without de-' parting from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. I
What is claimed as new is:
