Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 19, 1919. Serial No. 324,797.
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. 'JA rnERY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Stamping-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object theprovision of a stamping press with simple and effective turret operating means for bringing into successive operating positions a plurality of dies and temporarily holding them in stationary position during the stamping operations.
' My object is to further provide the turret devices with ejecting means in associatlon wlth each the and fixed deflecting means above the turret for deflecting the ejected article laterally to one side, of the turret and dies.
My invention'also consists of improvements hereinafter described whereby the above objects and results are attained, said improvements comprising certain organization and combination of parts which are fully described hereinafter and more particularly defined in the claims.

the frame 3 and oscillated-by the rod 7 having at its lower end a roller 9 in contact with an operating cam 10 on a horizontal power shaft 11. This shaft is put into operat on by a belt driven fly wheel 12 through a clutch 13 of ordinary construction which may be put into and out of operation under the control of a foot treadle 1'4: and connection 15. The rod 7 is provided with an andis reciprocated by the lever 6 hinged to adjusting means 8 for lengthening or shortening it, to insure the exact engagement of the die 5 with the turret dies. 31. The construction which I prefer for this adjusting means, comprises a nut with right and left hand threaded ends secured upon correspondingly threaded ends of the divided rod 7 as indicated in Fig. 2. Secured to the table 2 in any suitable manner is the turret bed 16, which is provided with a central aperture for the vertical shaft 18 and an annularly arranged groove 35 having therein an ejecting cam 34: (Figs. 8 and 9). Secured to the upper end of the shaft 18 is the turret 17 which is circularand rotates upon the bed 16. This turret 17 is provided with a plurality of die structures arranged equidistant about. its axis, eight of such die structures being shown. While these die structures may vary to suit the particular character of the work to be accomplished, the general features will be more or less similar. In
the structures shown, there is a tubular upright member 39, fastened rigidly to the turret 17 an ejecting rod 33 extending down through the member 30 and with its lower end traveling in the groove 35 of the turret bed and adapted to be acted upon by the ejectingcam 34 thereof. Secured upon the upright member is a sliding annular member 31 which may normally extend slightly above the member 30 and yieldingly held in this position by a coil spring 32 (Fig. 3).

the star wheel and provided with a roller 2a which enters the radial slots 20 thereof the turret is given an intermittent rotary movement in timed relation with the reciprocating die 5, so that every time the plunger 4t and die 5 descend a die structure of the turret will be in vertical alinement.
To impart a rotary motion to the operat ing and locking arm 23, it is secured upon a vertical shaft 22 journaled in a bearing casting'28 which is bolted to the under part of the table 2" (Figs. 3 and 7). The lower end of the shaft 22 is provided with a miter gear 26 which meshes with a similar gear 27 on the end of the horizontal power shaft 11 which is also journaled in the bearing casting 28. As the turret makes one-eighth of a revolution for each revolution of the shaft 11, it follows that the plunger 4E and die 5 make ei ht reciprocations for one revolution of the turret or one for each die structure thereof as it is brought to and locked in position beneath the descending die 5.
Then the turret 17 is rotated after the stamping operation of the die 5 and its plunger, the ejector rod 38 in striking the fixed cam 34 is forcibly thrust upward and ejects the object from thedie 31 of the turret and which in striking the fixed deflector 36 is deflected laterally away from the turret, leaving the dies clear.
As above stated, I do not in any wise restrict my invention to the particular functions of the dies as these would vary with the character of the article being made, but the relation of the ejector means will be effective for all characters of dies and hence forms an organizedpart of the machine.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable, and while I have in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is tobe understood that I do not restrict myself to the details, as the same are susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a stamping press, the comblnation of a reciprocating die plunger, a turret j our naled upon an axis parallel to the direction of reciprocation of the plunger but out of line therewith, dies carried by the turret arranged in position about its axis and adapted to be successively brought into line with the reciprocating die plunger, a rotary horizontal power shaft arranged below the turret and having a cam for reciprocating the die plunger, upwardly extending connecting means between the cam, and die plunger for operating it from the cam, upwardly extending power transmitting connections between the rotary power shaft and turret for imparting to the latter an intermittent rotary motion, and locking means for automatically locking the turret during its periods of rest intermediate of its intermittent rotary movements.
2. The invention according to claim 1, wherein the connecting means between the cam and plunger comprises a hinged rocker arm and a divided rod between the hinged arm and cam and having the divided portions adjustably connected by a sleeve having, right and left hand screw threads in its respective ends screwed upon the opposing ends of the divided rod.
3. In a stamping press, the combination of a turret journaled upon a vertical axis and provided near its perimeter with a plurality of vertically extending tubular members and surrounding annular die members and springs between the turret and die members for yieldingly holding them slightly above the tubular members, ejecting rods extending through the vertical tubular members, devices for operating said ejecting rods when the turret is rotated, power devices for intermittently rotating the turret with a step by step mot-ion, a vertical die plunger arranged above the turret in line to operate successively in connection with the turret dies, a cam operated by the power devices, and upwardly extending power transmitting devices between the cam and the plunger, whereby the operation of the plunger and turret take place in timed relation. 7
l. The invention according to claim ,1, wherein the plunger is provided withspring devices for causing it to be continuously pressed upward in opposition to the action of the cam and connecting means and adjustable means in the connecting means .for adjusting the movement of the plunger.
5. In a stamping press, the combination of a main frame, a horizontally rotatable turret having dies, a vertical shaft extending downward below the main frame and having thereon a star wheel, a bearingcasting secured to the underside of the main frame and having journaled therein a short vertical shaft parallel to the turret shaft but extending to a lower level, a horizontal power shaft j ournaled in the bearing casting in the same vertical plane as the vertical shaft of the turret, bevel gears connecting the horizontal power shaft and the vertical shaft in the bearing casting, a hub secured to the vertical shaft in the bearing casting and having arms extending laterally above and below the star wheel, a roller j ournaled between the said arms and adapted to cooperate with the star wheel for imparting an intermittent rotation to the turret, a plunger above the turret, and power devices extending from the horizontal power shaft the cam and adjustable to vary its length,
and a lever operated by the rod and connectin with the plunger.
