To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR A. PANNIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented a new and useful Combined Hand and Self-Inking Stamp, of which the following is a specification. j c I This invention relates to tumbler or selfinking hand stamps, and is more particularly directed to a device in which independ ent dies are employed, and in which each 7 die istreated with an ink distinctive in color in order that. when the several dies are simultaneously stamped upon material'suitable for the purpose, the resulting printed matter from each die will standout more conspicuously. V
vIn'self-inking hand stamps in which the inking pad is secured within the plungerholding frame and in which a reversible die is adapted to be automatically inked when the operating handle, after being depressed, is released, it is possible, by means of a removable or fixed die plate provided with an opening through which the reversible die is adapted to project, to print matter which contains several colors bysupplying the pad which inks the removab'le or fixed die plate with an ink of a different color from that supplied to th reversible die.
As in most cases of-hand dating stamps,
. the device is so constructed that the dies which printthe dates comprising the days,

supplied with one kind of ink. A die plate removably or rigidly mounted on the tumbler frame and provided with a central opening through which the date die is adapted to be projected, is inked by a pad containing ink of a different colorv from that supplied to the inking pad for the reversible die.

In alining the different dies which comprise the date and which are formed on'endless bands, it is necessary to employ some means to prevent these independent dies from falling out of alinement. I'therefore employ an alining means provided with a slot. The material of the s1ot, instead of being cut away, is punched outwardly so that the said material will curl upwardly from the slot and provide a pair of flanges which will bear against the alined dies. 'A spring is employed to automatically grip a catch on the plate as it projects through an opening in the reversible die frame. -Fig.- 4isa View in perspective of the re- In Figs. 1 and 2 there is shown a movable or adjustable die provided with printing characters 4 and it comprises a series of endless bands, each provided with a plurality of diesprojecting outwardly from the bands and spaced from each other and carrying printing characters. These endless bands are movable or adjustable on a drum 16, and owing to their printing characters, different combinations of the characters may be formed for printing various dates. No claim is made for this feature.
Ordinarily the base member 17 is used as a die plate, but in this instance I prefer to use it as a base secured to the die frame 8, (Figs. 1, 8 and 9). The-base memberl'? carries a movable plate 18 pivoted to said member, a latch 19 and a spring 20 having a twofold function. The pivoted plate 18 is slotted centrally thereof at 21, the material at the edges of the'slot being bent outwardly and providing the out-turned' flanges 22 which are adapted to lie snugly against dies 28. The dies are projected through the slot 21 which prevents the several dies from getting out'of alinement with each other when the proper characters have been selectedfor printing the date. (Figs. 1 and 2).
A lug 24, secured to the plate 18 and projecting inwardly, toward the base plate 17, has an annular groove 25 which cooperates with the latch 19 to hold the alining plate 18 against the base member 17 when the said plate 18 is forced down upon the base The base 17 is provided with an opening allning with an opening 27 in 'the' the catch surrounding the opening 27 in the latch 19 will slip into the annular grooves of the lug 24 and hold the plate 18 upon the base 17, since the spring 26 continually maintains the latch 19 in engagement with the lug 24. As the latch 19 is moved in opposition to the. spring 26 and a portion of the edge of the opening 27 is released from the groove 25 of the lug 24, the pressure of thespring 28 will force the plate 18 outwardly. and release it from its position of aiming-the dies 23. The operation of my device is as follows: As shown in Figs. 1 and 5, the reversible die plate 15 is in normal position with the printing characters 23 and 23 engaging the inking pad 37; The handle'2, yoke 3, and the plunger ll are iii-normal elevated position. In Fig. 1 the plunger 41 is locked in elevated position by the spring-pressed disk 39 but may be released by lateral pressure of the thumb. The. printing characters 31 of the die plate 30 in Figs. 1 or 5. are first impressed upon an inking pad which is provided with an ink of a diii'erent color from that supplied to the pad 37.: As the hand stamp is impressed upon material the looking means or disk 39 is shiftedlaterally in order to move the catch 43 .from the slot 44. l/Vhen 'the' plunger ll is released and the handle 2 in either Fig. 1 or 5 is depressed, then the reversible die 23 or 23 will be forced downwardly and inverted and be impressed upon material, as the reversible printing dies are'inserted through the slot32i of the movable die plate 30. Y 1 "It will be'seen that the dies 23 or 23, which may in this instance designate the date, will be provided with an ink of one color, while the dies 31 will he. provided with an ink of another; color so that as the stamp is impressed,-the date will appear more conspicuously-than otherwise by reason of the fact death; is provided with a difierent color from the other printed matter. When the handle 2 is released, the dies 23 and 23* will be returned to their normal positions and engage the inking pad 37 preparatory-to anotherstamping. It will always be necessary to'apply the-die 31 manually to its inking pad, and. it should precede the operation of the reversible dies carrying the other datato :be'stamped.
l have shown my invention applied to hand stamps of the self-inking type, of which two forms are shown. This invention is, however, capable of wider application, for'Iconsider that I am the first to combine a self-inkin'g stamp with an ordinary hand stamp, thelatter having an opening or space inits printing face through which the printing characters'of the self-inking stamp are 7 caused to project, whereby two stamped impressions may be simultaneously made in contrasting colors- That part of my invention consisting of the die plate 30 may be applied'to any make of self-inking stamp.
Moreover, these elements are combined to permit the use of the stamp as a self-inking stamp, a hand stamp or a combination selfinking and hand stamp, this result being effected by the use of the automaticllocking device disclosed in Fig. 3 of the drawing. By the removal of the die plate 30, other plates having different printing matter may be substituted therefor; In this way a great variety of changes may be made in the device whichwould ordinarily require a number of different stamps to produce. While it is preferred that the die plate 30 be inter changeable, I Wish it understood that a permanently fixed die plate would embrace my invention. 7
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a hand stamp, thecombination' of a main frame, a plunger slidably mounted relative thereto, a reversible die rotatably mounted on the plunger, and means for supporting a die in advance of the reversible die, said means providing for a substantially simultaneous impression of both dies with one impression surrounding the other.
2. In a hand'stamp, the combination of a frame, a plunger slidably mounted relative thereto, a reversible die frame rotatably mounted on the plunger and provided with a die, and a plate provided with a'die positioned in advance of the die frame and having an opening through which the die of the reversible die frame is adapted to project.
3. In a hand stamp, the combination of a frame, a plunger slidablymounted relative thereto, a reversible die frame provided with a plurality of adjustable dies, means for a lining the several dies, a die plate pos1 tioned in advance of the die frame and provided with an opening, the said alined dies being adapted to be projected through the opening in the die plate. a

In a hand stamp, the combination of a frame, a die plate removably mounted on the end of the frame andprovided with an open ing, a plunger slidably mounted on said frame, a reversible die frame rotatably mounted on the plunger and provided with a die, the reversible die frame being adapted to project its die throughthe opening 1n the removab-ly mounted die plate. 5.*In a hand stamp, the combination of a frame, a plunger slidably mounted thereon, areversible die frame rotatably mounted on the plunger and provided with a' die, an inking'pad, and adie plate provide'dwlth an opening and positioned in advance of the die frame, said reversible frame being adapted to project the die located thereon through the opening in the die'plate when the plunger is depressed and tofcause' the die to engage the inkingpad when the plunger is'released. f
6. In a hand stamp, the "combination of a frame, a plunger slid'ably mounted thereon, a-reversible die plate rotatably mounted on the plunger,- an inking p'adsecured to the frame, a die plate'provid'ed with an opening and positioned in advance of the reversible die plate, said reversible die "plate being adapted to be projected through the opening in the other die plate, said reversible die plate being adapted to normally engage the inking pad, and means for looking the reversible die plate in its normal position of en agement with the inking pad.

a reversible die plate rotatably mounted on the plunger, a die plate provided with an opening and removably mounted on the end of the frame, said reversible die plate being adapted to be projected through the opening in the horizontal plane of the removable die plate when the plunger is depressed, and an inking pad adapted to be engaged by the re versible die plate when the plunger is re leased. i r
8. In a hand stamp, the combination of a frame, a plunger slidably mounted thereon, an inking pad, a reversible die plate rotatably mounted on the plunger and adapted to normally engage the inking pad, and means for locking the plunger in'its normal position. I v

In a hand stamp, the combination of a frame, a plunger slidably mounted thereon, a spring for normally retracting the plunger after said plunger has been depressed, a reversible die plate rotatably mounted on the plunger, a die plateprovided with an open-' ing through which said reversible die plate is adapted to be'projeoted, and means for automatically looking the plunger in its normal position. i r
10. In a hand stamp, the combination of a frame, a plunger slidably mounted thereon, a reversible die plate rotatably mounted on the plunger, means for returning the die plate to its normalposition, a die plate positioned on the outer end of the die frame and provided with an opening, the reversible die plate being adapted to be projected through the opening in the second mentioned die plate, and means for automatically locking the reversible die Plate in its normal position.
11. Ina hand stamp, the combination of a frame, a plunger-slidably mounted relative thereto, a reversible die rotatably mounted on the plunger, a die plate provided with a die in positionin advance of the reversible die, and an inking pad adapted to be normally engaged by the reversible die,
12. Ina hand stamp, the combination of a frame, a plunger provided with a slot and slidably mounted relativethereto, a reversible die rotatably mounted on the plunger, and a disk pivotally and resiliently mounted on the frameand provided with an opening through which the plunger is adapted to slide, a portion of said disk being adapted to normally engage the slot in the plunger when said plunger is in elevated position.
1 3, In a hand stamp, the combination of a main frame, a reversible die frame rotatably i-So mounted in the main frame, a plurality of dies adjustable on the reversible frame, a slotted plate for alining certain of said adjustable dies, a stud on said pivoted plate, and a spring-pressed catch for automatically gripping the stud when the plate is forced into alining position with the dies.
14. In a hand stamp, the combination of a main frame, a reversible die frame rotatably mounted in the main frame, a plurality of dies adjustable on the reversible frame, a slotted plate for alining certain of said adjustable dies, a stud on said pivoted plate, a spring-pressed catch for automatically gripping the stud when the plate is forced into alining position with the dies, and means for automatically forcing the plate out of alinement with the dies when the catch is operated in one direction,
15. The combination with a self-inking stamp including an inking pad, a spring-actuated plunger, and a reversible die carrying printing characters, of a fixed stamp applied to the end of the frame of the selfinking stamp,said fixed stamp having its printing characters facing outwardly and provided with a space or opening to allow the printing characters of the self-inking stamp to project through so that the impressions from both stamps may be simultaneously made.
16. The combination with a self-inking stamp including an inking pad, a spring-actuated plunger, and a reversible die carrying printing characters, of a fixed stamp removably applied to the end of the frame of the self-inking stamp, said fixed stamp having its printing characters facing outwardly and provided with a space or opening to allow the printing characters of the self-inking stamp to project through so that the impressions from both stamps may be simultaneously made, one of the impressions being inclosed by the other.
17. The combination with a self-inking stamp having its frame at the bottom provided with cross bars, of a die plate carrying printing characters, means provided on the die plate to removably engage said bars and hold the die plate in fixed position with the printing characters facing outwardly, and locking means to hold the self-inking mechanism out of action so as to permit the sole use of said die plate.
18. The combination with a self-inking stamp having its frame at the bottom provided with cross bars, of a die plate carrying printing characters, means provided on the die plate to removably engage said bars and hold the die plate in fixed position with the printing characters facing outwardly, and locking means to hold the self-inking mechanism out of action so as to permit the sole use of said die plate, said die plate having an opening therein to allow the printing characters of the self-inking stamp to project through when the said locking means is released.
19. The combination with a self-inking stamp having at the bottom a fixed die plate carrying printing characters which face outwardly, and means to hold the self-inking mechanism out of action so as to permit the sole use of said die plate, said die plate having an opening therein to allow the printing characters of the self-inking stamp to project through and print in the same plane as the printing characters of the die plate, when said locking means is released.
