IMPROVEMENT IN CIGAR-TRINIVIERS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANTHONY GRAMER, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State ot' Michigan, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Cigar-Cutters; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of struct the blades that while the cutting-edge is straight it will sever the cigar with a drawing eut. The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the blade, and its arrangement with the relation to the standard and stops, and in the sliding spring-gage, as more fully hereinafter set forth.

In the drawing, A represents the bed-plate, having a longitudinal semi-cylindrical groove to receive the cigar-bunch. B is an end plate, preferably of cast met-al, secured to one end of the wooden bed-plate, and is provided with a hook shapedcavity, which forms a contracted continuation of the groove in the bed-plate.

O is a knife, angular in outline, with a straight cutting-edge at a, and is pivoted at its heel by a screw, b, to the rear upper corner of the standard. A dished steel washer, c, interposed between the blade and the head of the screw, keeps the cutting-edge of the former in close contact with the side of the standard. The upper end of the blade is provided with a con` vex handle, D, a smart blow upon which depresses the blade and severs the cigar, the

cutting-edge of the blade being tangent to the periphery of the cigar. While the movement of the former is radial, the cutting-edge of the blade is drawn diagonally across the bunch, and severs it cleanly with a drawing cut.

The blade is elevated by one end of the helical spring E, whose other end is inserted in a socket at the back edge of the standard. The lifting-arm ofthe spring, to engage with the blade, is carried across the front edge of the standard, which is castwith a stop, d, which arrests the spring at the completion of the downward stroke of' the blade, whose upward stroke is arrested, at the proper point, by a stud, c, on the front side ofthe standard.

F is a rod, fastened at each end to the bed- 'plate back of and parallel to the groove, on which rod slides the gage G, having two downturued ears, f, through which the rod passes, and a semicircular flange, g, at the front end, projectinginto the groove for the point of the cigar to abut against.

The gage being of elastic sheet metal, the rear end is bent downward, so as to press upon the bed-plate with suficient force to keep it in place, unless considerable power is used to push it either way upon the rod.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The plate B of a cigar trimmer having stop d, and a recess ribbed for the cigar, combined with the laterally-bent lever-knife U having a straight shear-cutting edge, and held closely to the rib and plate, all as herein described.

2. The guide-rod F and spring-gage G, constructed as described, in combination with lthe bed-plate A of a cigar-trimmer, as shown and set forth.
