Be it known that I, THOMAS LUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in the Preparation of Heel-Blanks, of which the following description, in connec tion with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to the preparation of heel blanks. The satisfactory attachment of a heel to a shoe or a top lift'to a heel requires, under most conditions, the application of adhesive between the heel and the heel seat portion of the shoe sole or between the top lift and the heel, as the case may be. This is customarily effected by a daub of liquid glue, applied to one of the parts to be brought into contact, at the time of the attaching operation, either by a hand brush or by an appliance. attached to the heeling machine. This necessitates keeping the glue pot and glue in condition for immediate use at all times and is accompanied by a considerable waste of glue and occasional damage to the stock by the misuse of the glue in a fluid condition about the work.
The present invention is directed to the elimination of all liquid glue about the heeling machine by the incorporation in the heel blank, in the course of its manufacture,.of an appropriate, dry adhesive which requires only softening, as, for example, by contact with a damp sponge, vapor or heat, to ren der it effective for producing a close connection between the blank and the part to which it is to be attached by the heeling machine. in one aspect, the invention accordingly consists in a method of making heel blanks which includes applying and forcing a dry adhesiveinto that surfaceof a blank which is to be attached to another part of a shoe. This may advantageously be done at the time of the usual blank compressing operation, the adhesive being permanently secured to the face of the blank by the aressure applied by the heel compressor. 11 a preferred manner of practising the invention the adhesive may be applied to the surface of the blank-for example, by blowing it on 1n powdered form-while the blank is in the compressing mold and immediately before its engagement with thepressure ap plying die.
From another viewpoint, the invention may be said to reside in the combination, with means for applying a dry adhesive to a face to a heel blank, of means for engaging the said face and pressing the adhesive upon it.
Another feature of the invention consists in the combination with a heel compressor, of means operating automatically to apply dry adhesive to the seat face of a heel blank while the blank is in the mold and before the engagement of the seat die with the said face of the heel.
A further feature of the invention comprises the combination, with the molds of a heel compressing machine of means, oper-' ated automatically in timed relation to the molds, to transfer paste to a heel blank in the molds. This may conveniently be effected byoperating the paste transferring means from the reciprocating head which carries and operates the molds,
These and other features of the invention, including both details of the method and certain details of construction and combinations of parts of mechanism for carrying it out effectively, will become clearly apparent from readin the following description of one example of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure shows a dry paste applying mechanism in combination with so much of a commercial heel compressing machine as is necessary to explain the invention.

ll hile various agencies may be utilized in practising my method, I prefer, above indicated, to carry it into effect in connection with the usual blank molding or compressing operation and, to that end, have combined with the commercial type of heel and top lift compressing mechanism specially suited to the purpose. 7

A hopper 15 for dry, powdered adhesive is mounted upon the front of the stationary cross head t and has at its lower end a restricted outlet regulated by a gate 16 and terminating in a nozzle 18 which extends obliquely into proximity with the lower face of the seat die 2, and the adjacent face of a heel blank in the mold when the latter approaches the said die. The nozzle may be flexibly mounted to permit it to be displaced upwardly by the mold 5.
On the side of the hopper is a cylinder 20 in which is fitted the head 22 of a piston 2a which has a lost motion connection 23 with the vertically reciprocated head 6 of the com- 'pressor. In the upper portion of the cylinder 20 is fitted a thimble 25 which is springpressed downwardly into position to cover a port leading to the nozzle 18. The extent to whichthe thimble extends'below the port,

spring, is controlled by a rod 26 threaded into the thimble. The rod extends loosely through the top of the cylinder and is threaded into an adjusting nut.

Having explained the nature of this in venti'on, I claim as'new. and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. That method of preparing adhesive coated heel blankswhich comprises applying a dry adhesive to the surface of a blank and uniting the adhesive to-the said surface by pressure. 1 2: That 'method of preparing adhesive coated heel blanks-whichcomprises applying a dry adhesive to" the surface of a blank and then uniting the adhesive to said surface by the application of pressure.
3; That improvement in the preparation of adhesive coated heel blanks which comprises blowing dryadhesive in powdered form upon a surface of the blank and then applying pressure to the said surface to unite the adhesive thereto.
'4. That improvement in the preparation of adhesive coated heel blanks which comprises distributing upon a surface of the blank by compressed air, a measured quantity of dry adhesive in powdered form face of a blank, and then simultaneously pressing the adhesive into said surface and molding the blank.
6. The combination with means for applying dry adhesive to a face of a substantially dry heel blank, of means for engaging the said face and pressing the adhesive upon it with sufiicient pressure to cause the adhesive to adhere to the blank.
7. The combination with a heel compress ing machine, having a mold and a seat die, of automatic means for applying a dry adhesive to the seat face 01" a blank in the mold prior to the engagement of the blank with said die.
8. In a heel compressor the combination with mold members and a vertically reciprocating head to operate them, of means operated from said head for applying paste to each heel in the molds while the molds are open.
9. In a heel compressor the combination with mold members and a vertically reciproeating head to operatethem, of a paste c0ntaincr and means operated from said head to transfer paste to the heels while the mold members are separated.
10. In a heel compressor the combination with mold members and a vertically reciprocating head to operate them, of a dry paste container, an air cylinder and means operated from a moving part of the compressor to effect compression oi? a charge of air and to cause the air to transfer dry paste from the container to a heel.
11. The combination with molds movable to inclose a heel of means operated automatically in timed relation to the molds to transfer paste to the heel in the molds while the molds are open.
12. The combination with heel compress ing means of: a hopper, an air cylinder, a piston and means to compress a charge of air and employ it in delivering material from the hopper to the compressing means.
13. The combination with heel compressing means of a piston, a cylinder, a nozzle opening near the compressing means, and means to operate the compressor and the piston in timed relation and cause a charge of air to be discharged through the nozzle.
1%. The combination with heel compressing means, including a vertically moving head, of a hopper and a connection from said moving head to vibrate the hopper.
15. The combination with heel compress ing means, of a hopper, a cam track, a hammer, and a connection from said moving head cooperating with the cam track to cause the hammer to tap the hopper.
16. The combination with a holder for a heel to be treated, of an air cylinder, a piston, a member in the cylinder arranged to be moved by the piston to open a port leading toward the article, and means to operate the piston.
17. The combination with heel compressing means, of a cylinder 20, a piston 22 operated from the compressing means, a thimble 25 movable in the cylinder, said cylinder having a port'leading toward the compressing means, a spring holding the thimble over the port, and connections operated by the piston to move the thimble to uncover the port in timed relation to the operation of the compressing means.
18. The combination with heel compress ing means, of an air cylinder having a port discharging toward the compressing means, a piston, and a lost motion connection between the compressing means and the piston arranged to compress a charge of air and to open the port at a predetermined time in the operation of the compressing means.
19. The combination with means constructed and arranged to inclose a heel and then cause engagement of the heel with a seat pressing die, of means for automatically delivering a charge of adhesive in position to be pressed upon the heel by the die.
