UNITED A STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BYRON G. BRADLEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,111, dated June 24, 1873; application filed July 15, 1872.
- To all zrhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BYRON G. BRADLEY, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Wrenches, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view; Fig. 2, a reverse side View; and Fig. 3, a cross-section on line :0 y of Fig. 2.
The nature of my invention consists in forming an adjustable Wrench by connecting both jaws so as to form a handle, in connecting the jaws by a rivet passing through a slot or mortise, and adjusting them by means of a projection and rack on the tail end of the wrench, which forms the handle.
The wrench is made of cast-iron or other suitable metal.
The jaw A, which I call the stationary jaw, is provided on one side with a recess, G, as shown at Fig. 2. In this recess I form a slot, 0. The other jaw, B, which I call the movable jaw, is provided on one side with an ear, H, fitting and working in the recess G, and through which and the slot the bolt D, which connects the jaws together, passes. At the tail end of the wrench, which forms the handle, I make a projection, E, and a series of notches, F, into which the projection E fits, and by means ot'which the jaws are adjusted to grasp nuts of different sizes. 'By this arrangement of the projection and notches at the tail end of the wrench I avoid the use of clasps, as the jaws are held in place by the grasp of the hand.
By forming the handle from the two partsa b, projecting from the jaws A B, as shown, I produce amuch stronger and more durable wrench than can be made by the use of a separate handle.
What I claim as new is as follows:
The combination of the extended jaws A B, I)1:Q\"l(18d with an ear and pivot H and slot 0, with the notches F and point E located at the ends, so that a slight pressure of the hand will hold them in their adjustment, substantially as specified.
BYRON O. BRADLEY.
