Description

@rler-Lb, @l PHILDELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
lliilpRCVWlEhlT EN @LRGAND BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Lettere Patent No. lldttimlltl, dnt-ed June 24, 1873; application filed June o, 1873.
To all zehom tt may concern:
Be it known that l, Guns. E. BALL, ol Philadelphia, Siete oi' Pennsylvanie, have invented certnin Improvements in Argenti Gas or l' opor Burners, of which the following; is :i specification z My invention relates to that class of Arnaud burners in which the ilow ot gus is regulated nud controlled nt the point where the ,uns escapes, or the point oi' combustion; und it feminists in so constructing;- and arranging the two shells ni' whieh the burner is' composed that the burner will he opened b v en upward movement of the inner1 shell und closed b v e downward movement of the saine, as hereinafter more tullf,r set forth. In constructing my burner I malte the outer shell, as usual, with a female screw on the interior of the lower part, and l generally turn or bevel its upper edge inwardly. The inner shell'l construct with n male screw on the outside et' the lower part. The seid inner shell is made ol sullcient length to project above the upper edge of the outer shell when properly pluced therein, and the npperedge of seid inner shell is turned or beveled ontward so as to torni :t valve which will have its'seat ou the upper edge oi'4 the outer shell. lll; will be seen that the burner thus constructed `will he opened in the nel: ot' screwing together or tightening the two shells, und will be closed by unsciewlnp,` the saine. It will be further seen thet the movement oi' the inner shell is limitedin both direetions by the bevel and 'thumb-flange, and cannot be turned out of the outer shell by accident or carelessness.
The drawing; represents n sectional view of my invention.
)rovided with a short )i )e (1- to connect with 5 7 the service-pipe.. lhis pipe is made the full size ol the service-pipe in order to deliver the 'gas freely to the burner. l represents the inner shell, the lower portion oi' which is inode with straight sides, the upper portion being' "turned in or contracted, as shown, and extend- `ing;` upward ubove the edge of the outer shell,
'..where it is beveled or turned outward, forming u val\,j,e which nos its seat on"flie (op oi' the outer shell at its edge, as shown. l
The burner will be opened b v the act of screwing together or tigghtenilns,` the two shells, und closed by unscrewine,` the saine. lt will be impossible to nieve the inner shell too l'ur in either direction, lor the bevel or vulve on lthe upper edge of the inner shell limits its downward movement, und the thnlnb-tlnnge on its lower part limits its upward movement. lt is, therefore, impossible to turn the inner shell out of the outer shell, or unscrew it,ns is the euse in the burners as ordinarily con structed. Across the interior ot' the inner shell I set a disk oi' wire'gnuze or n perforated plate; but this muy be omitted, il' desired. What l elainl isc The inner shell B extendingabove the top of the outer shell A, and beveled outwardly et its upper edge, forming a valve having its seat on the edge of the outer shell in ooinbination with said outer shell, arranged to eperite ns described.
