IMPROVEMENT IN CARBURETIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,105, dated June 17, 1873; application filed February 21,1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASA W. WILKINSON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Making Illuminating-Gas; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing forming part of this specification, which drawing represents a longitudinal section of my apparatus.
This invention consists in the combination of a heating-chamber with an air-holder, an air-heater, and a spiral carbureter, the airholder being constructed on the principle of a gasholder,'while the spiral passage of the carbureter is lined with some absorbent material in such a manner that by the action of said air-holder a constant and uniform current of air is driven through the carburetor, and that the illuminating-gas thus prepared produces a steady flame.
In the drawing, the letter A designates an air-holder, which is constructed on the principle of an ordinary gas-holder, being composed of an inverted cup, B, which is suspended in a tank, 0, partially filled with water, and which is partly counterbalanced by weights D, so that, when the said cup is raised and filled with air and then allowed to sink down gradually, it will produce a uniform pressure upon the air, and the air will pass oil through the pipe E with a steady and uniform force. In the top of the cup B is a large hole, a, which can be readily opened'or closed, and if the cup has descended to its lowest position this hole is opened, so that, when the cup is raised, the external air will have free access to the interior of said cup. After the cup has thus been charged with air the hole a is closed and the cup is allowed to sink down. A rope or chain, 0, serves to raise the cup whenever it becomes necessary. The air-pipe E leads to a heating-chamber, F, and thence another pipe, G, passes to the center of a carburetor, H. This carbureter is constructed with a spiral passage, 01, the extreme coil of which communicates, by a pipe, I, with the burners. The passage d is lined with some absorbent material, and if the carbureter is partly filled described with the carbureter H the air is caused to pass through the carbureter with a uniform pressure, and the illuminating-gas produced gives a steady and uniform flame.

The combination of the heating-chamber F with the air-holder A and carburetor H, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
