ELECTRIC DRIVING PUMP-JACK.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAUs P. CHRISTEN- snN, a citizen of the. United States, residing at Petaluma, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Driving Pump-Jacks, of which the followin is a specification.
lly invention is an improved pump jack for use with reciprocating-rod pumps and it especially has for its object to provide a simple and compact arrangementwhereby an electric drive motor may be sustained 0n the drive head base, as well as the power translating and transmitting mechanism, the said transmitting and translating mechanism being itself of a. special design and constitutes one of the principal features of the present invention.
Another object is to provide a worm-drive for the master gear which carries the power applying crank element, a gear on which the crank element cooperates with a fixed gear member or geared track and has a crank 00- operative with the reciprocating head-rod to translate the rotary motion of the motor into reciprocating motion in the pump head rod, thereby transmitting power to the res ciprocating rod of the pump.
Another object is to provide for runningthe gearing and reciprocating connecting rodin oil, in a manner to eliminate oil leakage while maintaining sufficient lubrication of the moving surface.
In its general nature, the invention resides in the provision of a peculiar head base on which the electric motor is mounted and on which the power transmitting and translating mechanism is located; the power trans mitting and translating mechanism comprises a driving worm coupled to the: motor shaft and meshing with a masterworm gear journaled on a sleeve bearing in the housing, which contains the gears; to the master gear a crank disk with a shaft and thrust hearing is secured to the master worm gear to.

In its more subordinate nature, the invention includes those novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully de scribed and then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

In the drawings in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in all of the figures, 1 represents the head base of the pump which is adapted to be secured in an suitable manner at the top of the well and on which is mounted the drive motor and the power transmitting and translating mechanism.
The base 1 is provided with a downward extension-2 having a chamber provided with a water inlet a and an outlet 5.
6 designates a cover which is provided with a gland or stuffing box 7 through which the pump rod 3 passes, the stufling box 7 being adjustable by means of studs and nuts 8.
The rod 3 is secured by nuts 10 to a cross head 9 to which the head-rods 11 are fas tened, the rods 11 passing through bearing bushings 12 in the cover 48 of thehousing 17 the housing 17 being fastened to the head base 1 by bolts 18, as shown.
The head rods 11-11 aresecured by nuts 13 to a cross head 14; which is itself secured by nuts 15 to the connecting rod 16.

The housing is bored through to admit the worm 20 and one end of the boring is closed i by a cap 4:7, while the other end is closed by a cap with stuffing box 24, through which the worm shaft 21 projects and is coupled at 22 to the shaft of the electric motor 28.
The housing 17 has a bearing bossQf) on which the master worm gear 26 is journaled, the bearing surface of the gear 26 being lined with a suitable bearing metal and the 7 gear being provided with oil leads 35. for purposes of lubrication.
The master gear 26 is recessed or counterbored at 27 to receive the crank disk 28 whose hub 30 is adapted to enter the bore of the bearing boss 25 and which is adapted to be secured in place by a stud 81 and bolt 32 with washer 83, an anti-friction and thrust bearing 34 being provided as best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
This holds the disk 28 in place and also serves to hold the gear 26 in proper position on the bearing 25, a'cap being provided over'the end of the stud 81, as shown, to effect an oil tight closure of the casing.
The disk 28 has a crank pin 36 provided with suitable oil leads 37 bored to receive a screw 40 which secures the crank pinion 4:1 in place through the medium ofa cap 39,
the crank 36 being chambered to provide an oil pocket 38 anditself being provided with oil leads 37 to the bearing surfaces, as best shown in Fig. 2. a g
The screw 40 is also provided with an oil lead 44: entering through the head and dis charging into the chamber 38.
The gear 41 has an extension 42 carrying a crank pin 43 on which the lower end of the connecting rod 16 is mounted.
45 is an oil drain from the casing 17. Through this opening 45 oil may be admitted to or removed from the casing, as desired.
49 designates a fixed gear for a geared track which is insertible into the housing and secured to the same by screw bolts 50 which fasten the cover to the housing.

From the foregoing, it will be noted that with my arrangement, ample provision is,
made for the lubrication of moving surfaces; a; simple, compact and rugged gearing is provided which can be mounted on the base or removed therefrom as a unit and in which the motive power is directly mounted on the base as a separate unit from the gearing.
While I have illustrated an electric motor as the prime mover, it is clear that other motive powers may be utilized, if desired.
The provision of the openin in the lions ing cover through which theconnecting rod 16 reciprocates, at the highest point or level of the casing, arevents oil leakage from the casing through the opening in which the rod reciprocates,thiis rendering the gearing more eflicient in its use of lubricant.
Furthermore, by guiding the pump rod. 3 in a bearing 67 close to but below the gearing and guiding the reciprocating rod 16 in a bearing at the top of the gearing housing with the rod cross head and head rod connections between the pump rod 3 and connecting rod 16, whipping of the rods, with consequent wear on the reciprocating bearing surfaces, is practically eliminated.
' From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
What I claim is:
1. In a pump jack, a base having a guide for the pump rod, a driving motor mounted on the base, a power transmitting and translating mechanism mounted Ont-he base and coupled to said motor and having provision for coupling to the pump rod, said transmitting and translatingmechanism comprising a housing having a cover, a driving worm journale'd in bearings in said housing and coupled with said motor, a master worm gear mounted in said housing and meshing with said worm, a crank member carried by said master worm gear, a connecting rod mounted in said cover and means for translating the rotary motion of said crank mem ber into reciprocating motion in said connecting rod.
2. In a pump jack, a base having a guide for the pump rod, a driving motor mounted on the base, a power transmitting and translating mechanism mounted on the baseand coupled to said motor and having provision for coupling to the pump rod, said transmitting and translating mechanism comprising a housing having a cover, a driving worm journaled in bearings in said housing and coupled with said motor, a master worm gear mounted in said housing and meshing with said worm, a crank member carried by said master worm gear, a connecting rod mounted'in said cover and means for trans lating the rotary motion of said crank member into reciprocating motion in said connecting rod, said last named means compris ing apinion journaled'on said crank member and itself having a crankto which said connecting rod is joined, and a stationary track gear wlth which said pmion meshes.
3. In a pump jack, a power transmitting casing having a sleeve bearing, a master ear journaled on said bearing, a crank disk having a hub journaled in said sleeve bearing, a thrust bearing and means cooperative with said crank disk to hold said disk, said master gear and said thrust bearing in place, a crank-pinion journaled on the crank of said crank disk, means holding said pinion in place, a fixed gear-track with which said pinion meshes, a connecting rod journaled on the crank of said pinion, said casing having an opening through which said connecting rod passes.

In a pump jack, a power transmitting and. translating mechanism comprising a casing having a sleeve bearing, a master gear journaled on said bearing, a crank disk having a hub journaled in said sleeve bearing, a thrust bearing and means cooperative with said crank disk to hold said disk, said master gear and said thrust bearing in place, a crank-pinion journaled on the crank of said crank disk, means holding said pinion in place, a fixed gear-track with which said pinion meshes, a connecting rod journaled on the crank of said pinion, said casing having an opening at the top through which said connecting rod passes.
5. In a pump jack, a power transmitting and translating mechanism comprising a casing having a sleeve bearing, a master gear journaled on said bearing, a crank disk having a hub journaled in said sleeve bearing, a thrust bearing and means cooperative with said crank disk to hold said disk, said master gear and said thrust bearing in place, a crank-pinion journaled on the crank of said crank disk, means holding said pinion in place, a fixed gear-track with which said pinion meshes, a connecting rod journaled on the crank of said pinion, said casing having an opening through which said connecting rod passes, and having rod guides, head rods in said guides, a cross head con necting said head rods and said connecting rod together, means connecting said head rods and adapted to be connected to the part to be reciprocated.
G. In a pump jack, a power transmitting and translating mechanism comprising a casing having a sleeve bearing, a master gear journaled on said bearing, a crank disk having a hub journaled in said sleeve bearing, a thrust bearing and means cooperative with said crank disk to hold said disk, said master gear and said thrust bearing in place, a crank-pinion journaled on the crank of said crank disk, means holding said pinion in place, a fixed gear-track with which said pinion meshes, a connecting rod journaled on the crank of said pinion, said casing having an opening through which said connecting rod passes, a shaft having a gear connection with said master gear journaled in said casing and projecting to the outside of the same, said casing having a packing gland through which said shaft projects, said casing adapted to contain lubricant, said master gear having oil leads to convey the lubricant to the bearing surface of said sleeve bearing, said means which holds the crank pinion on the disk crank having provision for leading oil to the bearing surface of the disk crank substantially as shown and described.
