Description

' OTTO H. JOBS'KI, OF CLEVELANB, OHIO, A'SSIGNOR T() THE STANDAIR? ARTS COM- PANY, 0F CLEVELAND, G1110, A GQROBJATIG GF lt-Elfi?.
EIM'.
To allfwhomz't may concern.:
Be it known that 1, OTTO H. Jonsirr, a
y citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rims, of which the following is' a specification.l
This invention relates t0 rims for vehicle wheels and more particularly7 to rims vof the so-called quick detachable in which a side ring is detachably seated at one edge thereofv to facilitate the removal and re- -placin of a tire on the. rim, and has for one of its o jects the provision of simple and ef fective means for holding the side ring in Seated position upon the rim.
Other objects of the invention and the features of novelty wil be apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of' a rim embodying my invention, the rim being brokenaway at one point to more clearly show the locking means;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevation similar to Fig. 1 vbut showing a modified.. structure embodying my invention;
Fig.V 4.- is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
.In the modification illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, 11 indicates a vehicle wheel rim having a tire-retaining fiaiige 12 in gral therewith at oneedgethfmeof arr provided, adjacent its other edge, with a circumferential groove or channel 13, in which a detachable side ring 14 is adapted to be seated. The side ring 14 is transversely split, as indicated at 15, so that its ends can be sprung apart and the ring expanded. sufficiently to permit it to pass over the side wall of the channel 13, the ring being of such size that the ends thereof will abut when the ring is seated within the channel 13. Radially inwardly extending lugs 16 and 17 are formed on the ring 14 adjacent its ends and are adapted to extend through radi-il open ings 18 and 19 whichvare :termed in the bottom wall of the channel 13 and are circumferentially spaced so as t0 leave a web portion 20 of the rim between them. The
Specification of Letters Patent. Pa'ggn'jgd D953, 2Q, 1921.
191s. serial No. 310,793.
adjacent faces of the lugs 16 and 17 are inclined inwardly and toward each other, as indicated in Fig. 1, and a latbh member is pivotally mounted on the rim, as indicated at 22, and has a head portion 23 thereon which is adapted to engage the web portion 20 and the adjacent inclined faces of the lugs 16 4and 17,` being s0 formed that 4when in engaging position, it will prevent either end of the ring'from .moving radially outwardly. The latch member 21 mav be conveniently formed, as shown, of stock metal of uniform thickness bent to the desiredvform uandhaving a projection 24 atthe end thereof engaging in an opening 25 in the body of the member, thereby providing a light and rigid structure which is capable of economical manufacture. The lugs 16 and17 are preferably formed with those faces which are remote from the split 15 partly beveled as indicated at 26 and 27, respectively, and partly normal with respect to the circumferential extent of the ring to form shoulders 28 and 29 which are adapted to engage with the rim to interllock the ring from circumfe-rential'motion thereon.
opening 19, by reason of the engagementv of the beveled surface 2?' of the lug 17 with the rim at one edge of the opening 19, radially inward pressure exerted on the corresponding end of the ring will cause the ring to be further contracted until the shoulder 29 interloclrs with the rim to hold the ring 14 against expansion. Then the ring is properly seated in the channel 13, the latch member 21 may be moved from the dotted-line position shown in Fig. 2 to the full-line position shown, to engage with the lugs 16 and 17 and the web portion 2O to hold the ends of the rim in their seated position.
,In the structure shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, i
a latch member 30 is illustrated, which is adopted to onriy a pion A 3l for @gogomont with mi @planing ioimoc, in the Woo poit'ion 20 to hold, the atoii member in locking position. The 'plunger Si. has a shoulder 3 theooo. which the body of the membo 30 to limit its motion, and a ioof spring attached to .iatoh member 30, by sa; iri'vot 357 is provided to iiod the ond of the pion-gar 3i infiiitoocking om goga'eroent in the opening 52.
