To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. CRAW- roan, a citizen of the United States, residing at Liberty, in the, county of Sullivan, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovernents in Vehicle- Brakes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful im oroveinents inwagon brakes.
tyne object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved wagon brake head which is so constructed and arranged that the pole canbe raised while the brake is applied or set.
Another object is to provide a novel and improved device of this character wherein great leverage is possible to apply the brake.

Referring particularly to the accompany ing drawing, in Figs. 1 to 5, 10 represents the front axle of the running gear of a farm wagon, and 11 the hounds of the draftpolo 12, which hounds are pivotally connected to the hounds 13 of the axle. Secured to the upper face of each of the hounds 13 is a metal plate 14, the forward end of which is formed with a bearing eye 15 for the reception of the inturned pintle 16 of the arm 17 of a yoke 17. This yoke extends from one plate to the other, and straddles the hounds 11., in such manner that the pole can be readily swung upwardly, without interference with the yoke, or the operation of the brake. Sup ported on the front axle hounds 13, is the transversely disposed brake beam 19. Formed centrally in each of the arms of the yoke 17 is an apertured enlargement 20 which re ceives therethrough a pivot bolt 21, which bolt is engaged through the forward end of the rod 22. The other end of this rod is disposed through one end of the brake beam and held in position by the nuts 23. Nuts 2%. hold the rods 22 to the arms of the yoke.
Extending vertically from the center of the transverse portion of the yoke is a stem 25 which is adapted to be received in the socket 2 6 of brake lever 26, the upper end of said lever being forked for the reception of the foot of the operator, as will be understood.
It will be noted that the arms of the yoke are bowed forwardly, thereby increasing the leverage when power is applied to the brake lever.
Referring particularly to Figs. 6, '7, and 8 which show the modified form of the brake and its application to the vehicle, 26 represents the axle of the vehicle, 27 the front hounds to which is pivoted the pole 28, and 29 the brake bearn. Mounted on the upper face of the forward end of each side bar of the front hounds 27 is a bearing bracket 30. A yoke, as shown in 8, designated as a whole by the letter A has its parallel and vertical arms 31 formed with inturned terminals 31 which engage pivotally in the brackets 80, said yoke depending below and extending transversely beneath the forward ends of the front hounds 2?, and the rear ends of the tongue hounds 28. The outer or forward end of the lever .36 is formed with an eye 37 to which a rope (not shown) may be secured for rocking the lever to cause the movement of the brake beaminto brake applying position.
It will be noted that the arms of the yoke 17 of the first form are longitudinally curved, and that the arms of the yoke A are straight, I wish it understood that the arms of the first yoke may be straight and those of the other yoke curved, as desired, without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
