To all whom z'- may concern Be itlrnown that l, CHAnLns C. Sniiooniv, citizen of thellnited States, residing at Portland, in the countyrof Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Power-@pointed rloolllolders, of which the i'ollowing is a specication.
This invention relates to tools, and the primary object or' the invention is to provide an improved power operated device with which a plurality of diiierent kindsV of tools maybe associated, sothat-the device can be used tor various purposes, such as a shoe Shiner, a grinder, a drill, a buffer, a 'floor polisher, a veterinary tooth, grinder, a sand paperer, andthe like.
Another object ofthe invention is to pro* vide an improved power operated device of the above character having` an improved means for holdingthe tools detachably in position, so that the saniecan be conveniently and quickly removed or associated with-the device Whenldesired.
A further objectA of. the invention is to provide an improved device embodying'- a portable casing,` having` a handle attached thereto and supporting a pair or operatively connected, angularly related shafts oneof the shafts, having-means for connecting various types of tools therewith and the` other shaft having connected ,thereto a flexible shai't driven by a motor, the motor being positioned at any: desiredpoint.
A further object oit` the invention is to provide a clutch mechanism for connecting` or disconnecting the driven shaft from the driving` shalt inthe casing, so that the operation of the tool cany be stoppedwhen desired, without stopping the operation of the motor.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved device which is especially adapted for shining shoes, so that the laborious method now in vogue of shining shoes by hand may be eliminated.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the above character which is durable and eifioient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one which canbe placedupon the market at a reasonable cost.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the :following detailed description taken in connectionlwith the drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which drawings:

The improved deviceA includes a casing 5 having` a pair of right angularly related bearings o and Z which are connected together by a substantially semi-spherical wall 8. The bearings 6 and 7 are adapted respectively to rotatably support the driven shaft 9 and thedrive shaft l0. rlfhe inner terminals oit the driven shaft 9 and the driving shaft l() extend into the substantially semi-sphericalwall 8, andthe same are operatively connected Atogether by a pair of beveled gears 1l and l2. rlllie gear l1 is rigidly secured to the shai't 9 for movement therewitm while the gear l2 is rotatably mounted on the shaft l0 tor a purpose which will be hereinafter more fully described. lothl of the gears ll and l2 are prevented from slipping oil the terminals of the shaft by retainingl screws 13 which are threaded into the inner ends of the shafts 9 and l0.

The bearing 7 has its outer end provided with a relatively large bore i7, a portion of which is threaded for the externally threaded reduced portion 18 of the handle V19 by n 1 i .4.1 "I means oi wnico tnebiaclrenlng brush B or other device may be brought into engagement with the work. The shaft 10 has keyed or otherwise secured thereto the washer 20, the outer face of which bears against suitable bearings 21, which in turn bear against the rear wall of the enlarged portion of the bore 17 of the bearing 7 and against the outer'wall of the reduced portion 18 of the handle 19. The handle 19 has a metallic sleeve 22 extending longitudially therethrough which rotatably receives the driving shaft 10. rlhe inner terminal of the metallic [sleeve 22 can be threaded into engagement with the handle 19 if so desired.
The outer terminal of the sleeve 22 pro trudes beyond the rear end of the handle 19 and has keyed or otherwise secured thereto a bearing 24 in which is rotatably mounted a coupling 25 secured to the flexible shaft 26. yihe fiexible shaft 26 may be secured to the armature shaft of any preferred type of electric motor (not shown). The rear end of the driving shaft 10 extends into the bearing 24 and has a reduced extension 27 formed thereon which is connected to the coupling 25 in any preferred manner. The upper end of the bearing 24 may carry `inwardly extending teeth 28 for biting into therear end of the handle 19 and ythereby prevent movement of the sleeve V22 and bearing 24 in relation thereto. The outer portion o-f the bearing 6 is enlarged as at 29 and has rotatably mounted therein the cylindrical block30 keyed or otherwise secured to the outer terminal of the driven shaft 9 which terminates in the enlarged portion of the bearing. Suitable ball bearings are interposed between the cylindrical block 30, and the wall of the enlarged portion of the bore 29. of the bearing 6 so as to permit free rotation `of the block therein. The shaft 9 has also keyed or otherwise secured thereto `the collar 9 which engages the inner face of the bearing 6 and prevents lateral movement of the shaft in the bearing. Suitable ball bearings 10 are interposed between the collar 9 and the bearing 6 so as to permit the free unimpeded-movement of the collar in the bearing. The outer end of the cylindrical block 3() has threaded therein the sleeve 31, which rotatably supports the ring 32 forcontrolling the locking mechanism 33 for the tool shank or shaft as will be hereinafter more fully described. The rino; 32 is provided with a rearwardly extendingv iiange 34 which engages kthe outer surface of the cylindrical block 30 and the outer edge of the bearing 6. The outer end of the sleeve 31 carries an outwardly extending annular flange 35 which engages the spacer washer 36, which engages the forward face of the rotating ring 32. The locking means 33 for holding the tools in operative position in relation to flex and move outwardly and move the dog outwardly. rEhe sleeve 31 is provided with an aperature 42 through which the dog 37 is adapted to ride. rihe inner end of thedog 37 is adapted to lit into a recess 43 formed in the spindle or shaft 44 of theblackening brush or any other type of tool.` When the dog is forced inwardly into engagement with the recess, it can be seen that accidental displacement of the spindle or shaft out of the sleeve is eliminated. To prevent lthe accidental rotation of thering 32'when the dog is in operative engagement with the shaft 44, an inwardly extending tit 45 is formed on the inner surface of the recess 40 which is adapted to engage the forward iortion of the do lr and revent accidental movementA thereof. The lower end of the gear wheel 12 is provided with a clutch face 45 which is adapted to be engaged by the movable clutch section 46, which is splined on the driving shaft 10. The movable clutch section 46 is provided with an annular groove 47 in which is rotatably mounted the fork member 48,y which is carried by the shank 49 slidably mounted in the bearing 6. The shank 49 has secured to its rear end the thumb piece 50 so that the operator may readily move the shank so as to throw the movable clutch section 46 intoor out of engagement with the clutch section 45 carried by the gear wheel 12. Thus it will be seen that when the clutch section 46 moves into engagement with' the gear wheel 12, the same will berotated with the drive shaft 10 for actuating the shaft 9. The shank 49 is frictionally held against accidental movement by means of an expansion coil spring 51 which is confined in a recess in the bearing and engaged against the shank so as to normally exert a pressure thereon.
The blackening brush B as shown consists of a core 52 which is secured on the spindle or shaft 44, and this core 52 has secured thereto the brush tufts 53.
In operation' of the improved tool, the motor (not shown) is started in the ordinary manner, and the clutch section 46 moved into engagement with the clutch section 45V carried by the gear wheel 12, which will rotate the spindle 44. The brush tufts 53 are then moved into engagement with the shoe to be shined, and the quickly rotating brush tufts will effectively polish the shoe. It can be iso readily seen that by rotating the ring 32 the dog' 37 will be moved out of engagement With the shaft a thereby permitting the easy and quick removal thereof so that other types of tools may be associated with the device.

claim:

In a portable power operated device, a bearing., a driven shaft rotatably carried by the bearing, the bearing` havino; an enlarged bore therein, a cylindrical block rotatably mounted in the bore and secured to said shatt-7 a rotatable ring carried by the block, the block being arranged to receive a tool spindle, a dog arranged to engage the tool spindle, and means for actuating1 the dog said ring.
2. ln a portable power operated device, bearing, a driven shaft rotatably inounted in the bearing7 the bearing having an enlarged bore7 a cylindrical block rotatably mounted in the here and secured to said shaft, a tool spindle arranged to fit in Said block and engage said driven shaft, a sleeve secured to said block and arranged to receive said spindle, a ring rotatably carried by the sleeve and block, a leai spring secured to the sleeve, a dog carried by the leaf spring and arranged to extend through said Sleeve, the spindle having a eoclet therein arranged to receive the dog, the ring having` a slot therein for the reception oi' said spring and dog, the slot being gradually tapered toward one end thereof.
