MUSICAL TOY.
Speccation of Letters Patent. Pgttnted 12199.13, 1921 Application led March 17, 192i. lSerial No. 452,970.
To all @l0/tom t may conce/m Be it known that EironLnnnT S'rnonn, a citizen oi.' the UnitedV States otrimerica, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, has invented new and useful lmprovements in Musical Toys, ot which the following is a specification,
The object ofthe invention is to provide an attractive musical toy adapted to be used as an ornament tor 4Christmas trees and the like and designed to afford a representation or imitation of chimes by utilizing a current oit' heated air as the motive agent for actuating the movable element thereof, such eurrent or column of air being created artid cially and if preferred locally with relation to the device or being supplied by a suitable heating apparatus which may be utilized tor the purpose by a suitable location ott the toy; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying draw* ings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of the device.
F ig. 2 is a plan view of the holder :tor supporting the sounding elements.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of l ig. 1.
The apparatus consists essentially of a holder or support 10 which may be of annular or ring form spanned by intersecting diametrical bars 11 for supporting sounding elements such as resonant plates 12, and a striker 13 mounted and supported to describe a circular path in which said. sounding elements are arranged, so as to successively encounter said elements and cause a lsuccession ci tones or rings which may be varied in pitch to represent the intervals between the tones of bells tuned to act as chimes. The knocker or sounder is prefer ably loosely suspended as by means ot a pendent cord 14 :from -a rotary carrier 15 consisting in the construction illustrated, ot a spiral coil or turbine having a iiat blade exposed to a current o'lair moving in the direction of the aXis of the spiral, said carrier being pivotally mounted at its upper end by means of a supporting pin 16 carried by a standard or upright 17 which is shouldered as at 18 to support the holder 10 which latter also serves as a means of supporting a housing 19 preferably constructed in the i'orm of a bell and inclosing the carrier, sounding elements and knocker or tongue 13,
and also preferably being perforated or constructed of wire screen or the equivalent thereoic to avoid interference withan upwardly moving current ci air which may be supplied locally by means of candles 20 for the support of which candle sticks' or holders 21 are mounted upon a base 22 in which the lower end oi the standard is stepped and which standard may be hollow to form socket which may be titted upon the uppex.x end of a limb oit a Christmas tree or like supporting object.
lThe apparatus may be further ornamented bj.' the arrangement of a star 23 surmounting the bell shaped housing and ligures 2l representing angels detachably mounted by means ot brackets 25 on the holder l() pret-- erably between the planes of the candle sticks or holders.
rEhe sounding or resonating elements may as indicated consist' of dat plates oi metal such as brass or bell metal disposed in upwardly and outwardly inclined or oblique position with their stems 26 attached to the cross bars 11 of the holder.
The gures 2d may as illustrated. consistof flat plates which at their lower ends are positioned as indicated between the holders i'or the heating units to serve as guards to prevent side currents ci air from -allectinfv the flame oi the candles or like objects serving as heating units and insure the upward progress of a column ci 'heated air a suiii cient volume to eilioctively actuate the spi rally coiled ribbon constituting the carrierr which supports the sounder or tongue.
Having described the invention, what ir claimed as new and useful is p l. A musical toy having a rotary carrier, a knocker or tongue loosely suspended from the carrier and a series of sounding or resonating elements arranged in the path oi movement of said knocker or tongue, the carrier consisting oi an axially suspended spiral coil of ribbon, and said carrier and sounding elements being inclosed in a bell shaped housing of reticulated material.
2. A musical toy having a rotary carrier, a knocker .or tongue loosely suspended from the carrier and a series of sounding or resonating elements arranged in the path of movement oi said knocker or tongue, the carrier consisting of an axially suspended spiral coil of ribbon, and said carrier and sounding elements being inclosed in a bell shaped housing of reticulated material beneath which is arranged a holder for a heat generating unit.
f 3; A musical toy having a rotary carrier,
a knocker or tongue loosely suspended freni the carrier and a series of sounding or resonating elements arranged 1n the path oi movement of said knocker or tongue, the
- carrier consisting of an axially suspended n stick holders or sockets.
Vl. A musical toy having a rotary carri-er, a knocker'or-tongue suspended from the carrier, a series of sounding or resonating elements arranged in the path ofthe sounder or tongue, a housing of retioulated material inclosing the carrier and sounding or resonating elements, said carrier consisting ofa spirally coiled ribbon suspended at its upper end, and means :for producing an upwardly moving column ofaair through the housing and consisting of a plurality of heating units disposed beneath the plane of the bottom of the housing and guards suspended from the housing and occupying positions between the heating units for protecting the same from side currents of air.
In testimony whereof he aliixes his signature.
