residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements -in Gluing-Machines; and I do herebydeclare the following to be-a full, clear, and exact i description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin theart to which itap- Apertains to make and use these-me. i
This invention relates to gluing machines and more particularly to' such machines adapted to spread kglue upon the Ysurface of boards or other objects to be glued together.
It is the object of this invention to provide a Vmachine which will successfully apply either the so called vegetab-leglue or the animal glue, onerbeing more fluid `than .thel
other, to the object to be O'lued, to provide simple and easily adjusted ,means for changing the machine to operate on either the thick or thinglue or to spreada thicker or thinner coating of either kind, to provide a machine which is always ready to apply glue to `the surface of an object without waiting for any cycleof operations to take place and to provide such a machine which vis simple in construction and operation, eco- Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view on the'line 3+3 of Fig. 1 of the glue roll-driving and reverse gears.

Each spreading linkalso has a face portion 12 extending at right' angles to the bodyv portion 9and lying in a horizontal planeiin that portion of the chain, bothtop and bottom, which extends between the sprockets. The peripheries of the sprockets 3 4are slightly thinner than the body portions 9 of the 'links `7 .and vare serrated', Ythe extending portions 13 of said ,serrations serving as sprocket teeth which extend between t-helears `lOof the chain as said chain passes over the sprockets. Owino' to the dierentconsistency of different klnds of glue used, and for the purpose of applying the glue in a thick or thin coating on the kface 12 of chain, it is desirable to rotate the glue roller 18 at times with its surface contacting the face of vthe chain moving in the same direction and at ap- YPliixirilateljy the seme `speed. .as said ,chain Y and at other times to rotate saidroller in the opposite direction. The roller is rotated and its change of direction effected through the gears 20, 21 and 22, the sprockets 23 and c Vbeing shown fixed to the shaft over which a belt may be run. A shaft 27 is journaled in one end of an arm 28 and the other end of said arm is pivotally attached to the frame of the machine. The sprocket 23, driven by the chain 25 from the sprocket 24, is attached to the shaft 27 at one side of said arm and the gear 22 is attached to said shaft at the other side of the armJ The gear 2O is fixed to the glue roller shaft 19 and the idler gear 21 meshes with the gear 20 and is mounted on the frame 2. The driven gear 22, by virtue of being mounted at the end of the pivoted arm 28, may be moved to meshwith and drive either the idler gear 2l or the gear 20. By driving directly the gear 20, the roller 18 is caused to rotate in one direction and by driving said gear 2O through the idler gear 21, the roller is caused to rotate in the opposite direction. A slotted extension 29 on the arm 28 having a clamping bolt 8O passing through the slot therein permits the said arm 28 to be clamped in either of its positions.
Atop or cover 81 having a longitudinal slot through which the upper `part of the chain 6 projects is supported bythe frame 2, its surface being slightly below the face 12 of the chain.
The operation of the machine is very simple. The driving shaft A is rotated by any convenient power and the glue spreading Vchain 6 passing' over the sprockets 3 is moved, its lower portion passing over and in engagement with the glue roller 18 and its upper portion, being supported in a horizontal plane by the track 15, is constantly changing as the links freshly supplied on their faces 12 with glue from the roller 18 pass over the sprocket 3 and into view through the slotted top 81. The glue roller is driven as above described, either in the same direction as the chain or in the opposite direction, thereby applying either a thick or thin coat of glue to the face of the chain. A board 82 or any object to which Y glue is to be applied is placed manually with the surface to .be glued in contact with the upper face 12 of chain and receives by such contact the proper coating of glue for the purpose it is to be used.
Since there is no cycle of operations to be Vfollowed in order, the machine, after being set in motion, is always ready for instant use and there is continuously appearing a freshly glued surface of chain f rom which to receive glue. Therefore the operator may work as rapidly as he desires without interruption.
vWhile a specific construction has been shown and described, `it will be obvious that many changes may be made in the structure without departing from the spirit yof the invention.
I claim:
1. A gluing machine comprising a movable glue-spreading member, a .glue receptacle,
a glue roller partly immersed in glue in said receptacle and engaging the surface of said glue spreading member to apply glue thereto and means for rotating said roller in either direction so that its periphery in engagement with said member moves in the same directionV as the member or in the opposite direction thereto.
2. A gluing machine comprising a movable glue-spreading member, a glue receptacle, a glue roller fixed to a shaft and partly immersed in glue in said receptacle and engaging the surface of glue spreading member, a gear fixed to said glue roller shaft, an idler gear meshing with said gear on the glue roller shaft, a pivoted arm, a driving gear journaled on said arm and adapted to be moved to mesh with and drive either said gear on the glue roller shaft or said idler gear, and means for rotating said driving gear.
v8. gluing machine comprising sprockets mounted on shafts, an endless glue-spreading chain ruiming over said sprockets, a glue receptacle, a glue roller fixed to ashaft and partly immersed in glue in said receptacle and engaging the surface of said chain, a gear xed to said glue roller shaft, an idler gear, meshing with said gear on the glue roller shaft, a pivoted arm, a driving gear journaled on said arm and adapted to be moved to mesh with and drive either the said gear on the glue roller shaft or the said idler gear, means for driving one of saidsprocket shafts and means for driving said driving gear from said sprocket shaft.

A gluing machine comprising a chain ruiming over sprockets, said chain comprising glue spreading linksV and connecting links, said glue spreading links having thin body portions to which the connecting links are attached and broad face portions extending at right angles to the body portions and adapted to be engaged by the object to be glued and means for applying' glue to said face portions of the glue-spreading links. A gluing machine comprising'"'sprock ets, a chain-running over said sprockets comprising glue-spreading links and connecting links, a track extending between said sprockets and adjacent said chain and vengaged by said connecting links thereof to maintain the links in alinement and means to apply glue to the glue-spreading links. 6 A gluing machine comprising a chain having glue-spreading links and connecting links, sprockets over which said chain runs having shoulders near their peripheries which engage and support said connecting links and means for applying glue to Said glue-spreading links.
7. A gluing machine comprising a chain having glue-spreading links and connecting links, said glue-spreading links having thin body portions with ears thereon, and said connecting links being disposed in pairs on opposite sides of said ears and attached thereto, sprockets having serrated peripheries, the extensions of such serrations adapted to fit between said ears and also between the links of each pair of connecting links, shoulders on said sprockets near their peripheries to engage and support said connecting links 'and means for applying glue to said glue-spreading links.
