WATER-HEATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 8, 1917. Serial Nb. 153,40aff To all 107mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josn'rrr H. BAooN, a citizen of the. United States, residing at Lakewood, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Water-Heating Devices, of which the .followingis a full,
clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a water heating device of what is known as the convertible type, employing provisions in its construction whereby either gaseous fuel or a solid fuel may be used to heat the water containing portion. The object of the in-.
panying drawings forming a part of this specification in which Figure 1 is an end elevation with portions in section of a water heating apparatus embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section showing in plan the provisions for heating the water containing portion of the apparatus.
The apparatus comprises a base portion 1 and an upper water containing portion 2 which rests upon the base portion. The water containing portion is preferably made up ofa plurality of sections between which 1 there are spaces, through which spaces the products of combustion may ascend. This construction is not shown in the drawings, but inasmuch as it is a very common construction in the art, it is believed that it will be well understood. 7
The base portion at the lower part thereof is provided with a plurality of transversely extending grate bars such as indicated at 3.
These grate bars are mounted substantially throughout the length of the base. Above the grate bars there are arranged a plurality of gas burners such as indicated at 4. These burners extend transversely of the base.
At their rear portions the burners are secured to a cross member 5 which unites the rear endsof the burners, and upon this cross member thereiscarried a plate 6, the functionof whichwill be presently described;
Attheir front portions the burners are joined to a plate 7 this plate having "an upwardly extending portion 8 which closes anopening 9 inthe front part of the base. The plate 7 is also provided with an outwardly extending" flange lOwhich supports brackets 11' whichcarry a gas header pipe 12. This pipe 12 is connected with eachof the burners through a valved pipe and mixer connection such as indicated at 13.
The plate member 7 has secured to'the underside thereof, two or more downwardly extending legs 14, the lower ends of the legs being provided with rollers 15.
Vithin the base 1 there are one or more transversely extending supports 16. These Patented DecL13,
supports are mounted on the side walls of the base and give support to the plates 5 and 6 which join the rear ends of the burners.
When the burners and the cooperating connections are in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the portion 8 of the plate 7 closes the opening 9 and the burners extend within the base and in proper position to heat the water containing portion 2. Under these conditions the grates are not in use. I
When it'is desired to use a solid fuel, which of course necessitates the removal of the burners 4, the coupling 18 by which the gas header is joined to a gas line, is re leased and the header 12 pulled forwardly, the legs 14 of course moving forward and supporting the forward end of the burners and the plate 7 The rear plates 5 andv 6 will slide along the support 16 and when they have moved against the front wall of the fire-box, the opening 9 is closed, particularly by the rear plate '6, so that solid fuel may readily be used. H
The base 1, it will be understood, will be provided with the usual doors for the feeding of fuel and the removal ofashes, the fuel door being shown at 19 in Fig. 2.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that I have provided a very simple and efficient convertible furnace and one which may be converted from the gas type to the solid fuel type by merely disconnecting the gas header 12 and pulling the burners as a unit out of the base 1, and it will be apparent that the burners may be reinstated by a similar simple operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a Water heating apparatus, the combination of a base member having grate provisions, of a water containing portion mounted upon the said base member, said base member having an opening through a wall thereof, a plurality'of burners extend ing through said opening into the base portion, means for securing the said burners at their forward end, a gas header pipe supported by said means, connections between the gas header pipe and each of the burners, supporting means for the first mentioned means outside of the base portion, a plate to which the rear end of the burners is connected, slide bars for supporting the said burners within the base portion, the said burners being removable through the openforming a closure for the said opening. in,
the base member when the burners are withdrawn.
2. In a heating apparatus, the combina tion of a base member one of the walls of the base having an opening, a plurality of burners extending through the said opening and into the base portion, a plate which normally forms a closure for the saidopening in the base portion, the burners at one end thereof being supported by said plate, a second plate to which the rear end of the said burners are connected, said second plate being adapted to cover the opening in the base member when the burners are withdrawn as a unit.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aflix my signature.
JOSEPH H. BACON.
