Description

APPLlCATlON FILED OCT- 27. 1919.
Patnted Dec.13, 1921.
my g 74 23%? UNITED STATES HARRY W. FULENWIDER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
ICE/REMOVABLE GAP FOR CONTAINERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 13, 1921.
Application filed October 27, 1919. Serial No. 333,711.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY W. FULEN- 'WIDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Irremovable Caps for Containers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in irremovable caps for containers, and has for its object to provide means, for securing threaded cap to a container, which acts as pivot upon which the cap may be bodily swung to full open position relative to the filling opening of the container and which pivot is connected with the cap in such mannor as to not interfere with its rotation as required for its threading upon the cont iner.
in the drawings Figure l is a vertical sectional elevation of a device embodying invention, showing by dotted lines the cap as swung to open position.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the device in open position.
As shown in the drawing, I employ as the body of my device the fitting 8 which surrounds the iilling opening of the container, and is provided with an externally threaded neck i, a perforated flange for securement to the container and a boss 5, on the inside of the neck, having a.bore or bearing 6 therein.
The cap 7 is provided with internally threaded flange 8, for engagement with the neck 4 and with a circular way 9, defined by opposed circular ribs 10 which form a restricted and continuous opening 11 for the way.
As shown, the top of the cap is provided with an opening 12 intersecting the way 9, through which the headed pivot-pin 13 is inserted to a position with its head 14: occupying the wa its stem 15 extending through the restricted opening 11 and passed through the bearing 6, with its lower end projecting a distance beyond the hearing (as shown in Fig. 1).
At a point on the stem 15, removed from the lower end of the bearing a distance, substantially equalling the height of the threaded neck i I secure a fixed stop, such as the cotter, or split-key 16.
After the assemblage, as just recited, l insert a finish-filler 17 in the opening 12.
It will be obvious that the cap may be freely rotated about the head of the pivot, as required in its threading and the pivot-stein rise and fall in the bearing 6, as the threading progresses and that when the cap is moved to a plane above the neck it may be bodily swung, upon the pivot-pin to a full open position.
it is obvious that the described construction can be modified in various ways without departing from my invention, which invention broadly resides in the provision of a permanent pivot connection between a threaded cap and a container fitting, which in no wise interferes with the free threading or unthreading of the caps, whereby loss of the cap is prevented by theft or otherwise.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to have secured to me by the grant of Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a threaded container fitting having a bearing and a threaded cap having a circular way, a pivot-pin having a head occupying said Way and extended through said bearing and provided with a fixed stop to prevent its withdrawal from the bearing.
2. In a device of the class described a container fitting having a threaded neck, and a bearing, a pivot-pin axially and vertically movable in the bearing and provided with a fixed stop at each end, and a threaded cap having an annular way for engagement with one of the steps of the pivot-pin in a manner to permit the cap being rotated about the fitting and the cap swung to open position relative to the fitting.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
HARRY W. FULENWIDER.
