IMPROVEMENT IN THE MODES OF CONSTRUCTING WELLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,947, dated June 17, 1873 application filed March 1, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ASAHEL CURTIS, of Bastrop, in the parish of Morehouse and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Method of Forming Wells; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part .of this specification.
The invention relates to a new and useful method of forming wells with less brick for the curbing than has been heretofore used, and as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a plan, and Fig. 2 a vertical section of the means which I employ to enable me to place the wall about the spring.
A is the ordinary wooden earth-box, sharpened at the lower end, and having bands at a at top and bottom. This is intended to receive the bricks that are usually superposed thereon, while the wall and the box gradually sink lower and lower as the wall is built.
The cylinder B is placed about the box A, is gradually raised as the work progresses, and is removed at its termination. Thisnot only enables wells to be constructed with great evenness of the wall-bricks, and with perfect perpendicularity but also enables one to economize the number and expense of the bricks themselves, especially in country places, to which they are hauled from a long distance.
It has been heretofore tried to set molded arch or well-brick on their ends or edges, so as to give the requisite facing with a less number of bricks; but it has been found impracticable to maintain them securely in the proper position in order to receive the intermediate mortar. -I have overcome this difficulty also by using the outer case B, which is made to support the brick and guide the bricklayer. The space left behind the Wall by the removal of cylinder B is occupied by rammed clay or other filling.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The casing-tube B, applied about the earthbox A so as to enable the bricks to be laid evenly, perpendiculary, and more economically, in the manner and for the purpose described.
