'I ence being had therein to the accompanying drawings. l i
This invention relates to so-cdlled selffilling fountain pens, and hasforlyits object to provide a' fountain pen pf this class which is'simple in ,construction Iand convenient in operation.
' Inthe accompanying drhwing Figure 1 is a sectional' viewo the improved Lfountain pen with the parts in closedpositidn. Fig,
2 is a similar view of the filling piston drawn out lto the position-which itwilloccupy Awhen vthe chamber of the filled. Fig. 3 is a .detail sleeve within the casing. i i
Referring to lthe drawing, 12 denotes the hollow casing?` and 13 the pen holding'part which may be mounted in the forward end en has just been. Blew, o the. fixed yof the casing in the usual manner, said forward end being p'referably provided with a threaded portion 14 on which a cap 14? may be screwed. The part 13 is ,provided with a -ings 16; and 17 is a ,secondvfsleeve or valve tubular extension or sleeve Ik, having 'mi nhaving a close sliding lit within the said sleeve 15, said `valve sleeve 17 having vopenk ingsl18. The valve sleeve 17 is provided k35 with a tubular extension 19 preferably having anl enlarged or ianged end portion`20, said ,tu ular extension 19 having also anen largiged art or annular rib 20a. o'
Mou ted Within the casing 12vis a piston sleeve 2li having at its inner end a-'loose sliding [itivithin the said casing 12. The piston sleeve 21 is preferably closed at its outer end by a ca'p 20", and thus by drawing it out it will create a suction within the chamber of the casing 12, so that when thepen is dippedv into an ink receptacle and thsaid sleeve 21 is drawn out inkiwill be drawn through a passageway 23 into the chamber of the' casing 12, to fill the same.
When the parts are in the closed position shown in Fig. 1 the openings 16 in the sleeve 15, and the'openings 18 in the sleeve 17 will be in register with eachother. thus-providing an open valve through which. in filling,
the ink may enter the .chamber of the casing 12. When, however, the piston sleeve 2 1 has Specification of Letters Patent, p
1921.v Serial No. 481,444.
nearly reached its full outer position the fiange or enlargement 2la at the inner end K' ,thereof will vcome in contact with the en;I larged part 20 on the tubular extension19 of thesleeve 17 and thus draw the said sleeve 17 slightly outward so as to bring the openings 16 and 18 out of register with each other, as shown in'Fig. 2,"and thus4 close the" Valve afforded bythe said openings in the sleeve parts 15 and 17.
Screwed into the outer end of the casing Y .12 is a ring or gland 23 which is screwed 1n place 'after the plston sleeve has been inav sertedV in the casing 12, said ring or gland,
or the interposed cork packing ring 24, ifl
the latter be employed, serving as a stop to prevent the piston sleeve from being drawn entirely out of the casin 12. The cork packing ring 24,5tting tig tly between the casing 12 and the piston sleeve 21,',assures a proper suction yaction of the latter as it' is drawn out, in filling the pen. Afterthe chamber of the penfcasing' 12 has 'been filled lwith ink, by drawing the Vpiston sleeve-21 outward, and said .sleeve isito be returned to its original closed position shown in Fig.
1, the air in the chamber of the said piston sleeve will pass inward through the tubular extension 19 of the sleeve 17 and also through the sleeves 15 and 17 and the passageway 22; and when the said piston sleeve has nearly reached its closed position the cap 2Ob will come in contact with the flange or enlargedfportion 20 on the tubular extension; 1,9 iol the sleeve 17 thus forcing said sleeve inward, and 'thereby again bringing the openings 18 in thear said sleeve 17 into register with the openings 16 of the sleeve 15,150 that the valve alor'ded by these openings and the parts 15 and 17 will then be opened, thereby enabling .the ink in the chamber of the pen casing l2 to flow through the passageway22 to the pen.
lFrom the foregoing it will vbe understood4 that the invention .provides a self-filling fountain peri of simple construction, and which will be convenient and eiiicientfin operation..AA I
Having thus described my inventionv I 1. In a fountain pen, the combination with an outer casing affording an Aink chamber of a valve comprising two sleeves lproclaim and desire to secureby Letters Patent: y v E 'whenz desired, a pistony sleeve slidingly' mounted' Within said easing, and means whereby said valve will vbe elose'd when said piston sleeve is drawn outward, and will be openedgwhen said piston sleeve is moved in- Ward;
2.7111' a fountain l en,r the combinationwith an outer caeing a ording an ink chamber,`
of a /Sleeve fix-ed .Within said casing and pi'o vided with openings, a movablevalve sleeve having a close sliding' Vfit within .said fixed Sleeve andralso provided with openingswvhich i niay be caused to register "with the openings in said fixed sleeve, said valvesleeve hav- 'ing a tubular extensionv provided' with an ena part adapted to engage said tubular extension to'inove Said valve lSleeve'inward When said iston sleeve is moved inward.
n a fountain ien, the combination with an outer casing a Ording an ink chamber, of a pen-holdingl member fitted to said casing and carrying an inwardly extending sleeve provided with openings, a secondand movable 'sleeve having a close sliding fity within said firstnamedlsleeve and also provided with openings which may he caused to register with the openings in said firstnamed device, said Second sleeve having a tubular extension, a pistony sleeve'rtting within-,said outer casing, said pieton sleeve n and tubular extension having:r pai-tsl arranged for engagement with each other so that when said piston sleeve is nearly or fully drawn out, to fill the pen. the valve,
lafforded by said sleeves with openings. will be closed, but which valve 'will be opened vwhen said piston sleeve is nioved inward.
In testimony whereofl yaflix xny Signature.
