IMPRbVEMENT IN ILLUMINATED CLOCKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,839, dated June 10, 1873; application filed January 30, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EZEKIEL WADE, of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Illuminated-DialAttachment to Clocks, of which the following is a specification:

This invention consists in acombination,

with a clock or time-piece, of a partially transparent vase or shade, divided and numbered to correspond with the hours or divisions marked on the dial of the clock, and geared with the mechanism which operates the hourfinger of the clock so as to rotate relatively to a fixed index or pointer in unison with it, said vase or shade being mounted on the clock and containing a lamp, gasburner, or other illuminating device, whereby, while a convenient and shaded night-light is obtained, the time is readily discernible on the illuminated vase. This forms a ready attachment to an ordinary clock, and may be applied thereto at but a trifling expense, thereby differing from other illuminated dial-vases or shades requiring a special clock movement to operate them.

In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a clock with my illuminated-dial attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line as 00.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

A is the case, and B the dial of an ordinary clock, suitable for bedrooms and other places. 0 is the hour-finger, and D the minute-finger thereof. E is the partially trans parent dial attachment in the form of a vase or shade, mounted on the case of the clock, and divided into hours corresponding with the numbered divisions on the dial of the clock. This illuminated vase or shade is constructed to form a receptacle for or arranged to inclose a lamp, F, gas-burner, or other illuminating device, and is carried by an upright spindle, b, which is in gear by wheels 0 and (1 with the mechanism that operates the hourfinger of the clock, thus causing the llll1ll1ll1- ated dial, vase, or shade to move in unison with the clock, and by a fixed index or pointer, G, to clearly indicate at night or in a dark room the time or hour as recorded by the clock itself.

What is here claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-

The combination with an ordinary clock, having the dial B, the hour-hand O, and minute-hand D, of the supplementary illuminated dial, vase, or shade E, the index G, and the spindle b, and gears c d, for opera tion by the mechanism which drives the hourhand of the clock, and so that the illuminated dial revolves in unison with said hand, the whole being arranged essentially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
