- :enonuc'rs MACHINE COMPANY, or BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A oonrona- TION or AssAcHUsEr'rs,
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that 1, Jon V. R. SHEPHERD, citizen ofthe United States, residing at Holliston, county of Middesex, and State of -Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Containers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
The invention to be hereinafter described relates to bags or containers, and more particularly to waterproof bags or containers.
One good form of fabric for the production of the bag or container comprises. two paper layers-witha layer of black asphaltum or other suitable, waterproof material be-' tween them, and reinforcing filaments between the paper layers and embedded in the waterproof layer. The reinforcing filaments may be unspun fibers, such, for'example, ashemp, ramie, flax or sisal fibers,
or the filaments may be spunthreads or other elements. Preferably the filaments extend transversely of each other to furnish reinforcement to the material both transversely and longitudinally thereof.
secured together by waterproof adhesive to I prevent the ingress of. water through the seam thuslformedinto the interior of the bag. Waterproof adhesive, however, usually lacks the requisite strength to firmly secure theoverlapped portions together so as to prevent the bag from rupturing or opening out at the seam, Gums or nonwaterproof adhesives have the requisite strength to Securely hold the overlapped marginal portions together under normal conditions, but if moisture reaches the nonwaterproof adhesive, it is liable to soften and destroy the adhesive efiect thereof.
One of the objects of the present invention, therefore,- is to provide a bag or container having a seam formed of overlapped marginal portions which are secured by an outer waterproof adhesive and an inner nonwaterproof adhesive adjacent thereto, the
construction being 7 such that the marginal portions will be strongly securedtogether by CONTAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented N V 22 1921. Application filed August 7, 1919. Serial Ila-315,823.
the non-waterproof adhesive,and thelatter will be protected from the ingress of moisture thereto by the outer waterproof adheslve; 1
lWhen the non-waterproof adhesive is applied it is in a moist condition, and the moisture must be dried therefrom, in order that it may have adhesive effect securely to hold the marginal portions together. If this non-waterproof adhesive be applied to a portion of the bag or container blank protected by thewaterproof adhesive-between the paper layers, it has been found inpractice that the waterproof layer prevents the moisture in the non-waterproof adhesive from readily drying out as required to renden the same adhesive .so as to secure the marginal portions strongly. Another object of the invention, therefore, is to provide a bag or container blank which may have marginal portions without the waterproof layer thereon. The non-waterproof adhesive ma be readily applied to such margins, an since they-are not-protected by waterproof adhesive, the moisture from the non-waterproof adhesive may readily escape therefrom, and a strong seam may be obtained.
With the aforesaid and other objects in View, the character of the invention will be best understood by reference to the followirig description of one good form thereof shown in the accompanying .drawing,
wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bag or container blank having a portion broken away to disclose the internal construction of the blank;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the blank folded to produce opposed sides of the bag or container, and having outwardly folded end portions positioned in readiness to receive the adhesive for securing the margins of the ends together;
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the blank completely folded to form a bag or container; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view ofthe bag or container after it has been opened out following the completion of the folding process.
Referring to the drawing, the bag blank as shown in Fig. 1 thereof, comprises an outer layer 1 and an inner layer 3' of paper or other suitable fabric, the inner layer being somewhat narrower than the outer layer to-leave end margins 5 and 7.
. present-instance, they are re' oreed b, 1111-. spun fibers 9 extending longitudinal y of. the blank, and unspun fibersll extending Suitable means may be provided forreinforcing vthe outer and inner la era. In the transversely of the blank. It will be understood,: howeazer, that other remforcl ments or elements, such, for examp e, as
mentioned above, may-be \i'sed' to reinforce the blank as desired. To secure the inner and outer la rs to ge'therfaiayer- 13 of blackasph tum or efw other suitab aterproof material-ma be introduced therebetween, and the rei 'o'rc ing filaments-may be embedded in the ad- 'hesivelayer. The reinforcing filaments and central line15 transverse y of the lengththereof to form the opposite sides 17 of the bag. The edges oftheblank may be folded outward? transversely to the sides 17 to resent; tips 19 tobefolded as more fully ereinafter described, to. form theop-p'osed ends ofthebag.
, the bag is thusfolded, the margins Band 7 will'be atthe outer edgesof the flags. Sincethe" construction of the ends of t e bags'are similar, a description of the formationan'd constructionof one will suflioe for' Tosecure'the margins of theflaps of the bag together, "black asphaltum or other waterproof adhesive 21may be applied .to
the margin of ..one of the flaps adjacent the edgeth'ereof, and gum or} .nonewaterproof adhesive 23-may be. ap lied to .the margin adjacent the waterproo adhesive. It will be noted that the waterproof adhesive 21 and nonwaterproof adhesive 23 are on the margin of the'ba whichisnot covered by the waterproof *ad sive and thereinforcing applied to the trian ular portion 27 adjaoent the bottom fol 15' of the blank, and nonwaterproof adhesive 29 may be applied to said triangular portion adjacent to the waterproof adhesive 25 and along the-edge portion thereof. l
The flaps 19 may be creased along lines 31 *(Fig. ,2) to facilitate folding jofsaid flaps.
The 1unc0ated fla is then first folded "along the line.31 and t en the other flap is folded along the line 31 into superposed relation to the first'flap, as shown in Fig. 3. This will bring the waterproof adhes1ve'21 and non-waterproof adhesive 23 into waterproof adhesive 29. I
Since the nonswaterproof adhesive is appliedto portion the blank which do not have the waterproof adhesive between the paper layers of .blanlnflthe moietumwin the nen waterproof adhesive may. readily escape therefrom-, so that the nonwatev proe'f adhesive may qu'iekl dry cien'tl "to haveeieot stro yto-eemxre-the folde arts together. The water-p roof hesive is also lied to the said margins of the blank, and 18 located externally-of non-waterproof adhesive andadjaeent thereto so as to prevent ingress of moisture to the gnmmed or non-waterproof -adhes sive. Asa consequence, the non-water f adhesive-isso protected that it will a ways has; the effect to hold the securely tog After the bag hasbeen folded as described, it will be in the condition as shown in Fig. 3. Then it'may bereadi'ly opened out as shown in Fig.4,"in readinessto receive materials therein. I
By my inventiona bag or container is provided which may be readily folded a blank with few simpleope'mtionwand a bag- 01' container is produced which is Waterproof th mughout while 'ngthe necessary strength T to receive heid bythe waterproof adhesive 25 and the nonheavy materials without opening of" the 'seamsat the'ends of the bag.
It will "be understoodthat is", not 1 limited to the specificyembodiment shown, and that various deviations ma be made "therefrom without departing a 0m the spirit andseope of-Ltheappended claims. What is"-claim&d*is
