ERNEST RHODES, Oli HEEKIMEE, NE'W YQBK, ASSIGNOB TO STANDARD FURNITURE COMPANY, OF HERKIMER, NEW YORK, A GORPGRATION 0E NEW YORK.
STOP FOR DESK-SLIDES AND LIKE.
To a ll w from it may concern Be it known that 1, Banner R-rronns, a citizen of the United States, residing at l-lerkimer, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stops for Desk- Slides and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to stops for desk slides and the like.
Desk slides after being positioned are commonly held against withdrawal beyond their normal extended position by the use of a screw turned into the same from below and adjacent the inner end thereof, such screw taking against the front bar or portion of the desk. Such an arrangement 1s at once crude and at times, owing to the desk formation, more or less diiiicult of accomplishment.
The main object of the present invention is to provide a simple and efiective stop, one which may be readily positioned and as readily removed, when for any reason it is desired to entirely withdraw the slide.
The invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, wherein,-
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of so much of a desk as is necessary to illustrate the invention, the slide being shown as being placed or positioned within the desk;
Fig. 2 a like view showing the slide in its extended position and the stop in operative position;
Fig. 3 a cross section on an enlarged scale, taken on the line lllflll of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4. a perspective view of the stop and a portion of the slide. 7
In said drawings, 1' denotes the desk or table top and 2 the frontcross bar or frame which overlies the drawer 3. Said cross bar 2 is spaced away from the under face of the top providing a slot or opening at the front of the desk for the reception of the slide 4,
the slide being preferably guided at its edges upon ways 5 and 6 built in the desk or table structure. The slide adjacent its inner end is provided with a countersunk opening, or with an opening having two bores, as '2' and 8, for the reception of the stop. Said stop takes the form of a headed pin, the stem whereof is denoted by 9 and the head by 10. Bore 7 is slightly larger in diameter than the stem 9 while the countersink or upper bore 8 is slightly larger than the diameter Specification of Letters Patent. Patented N0V 22, 1921 Application filed July '2, 1821. Serial No. 482,970.
of the head. The height or length of the stop 1S equal to or less than the thickness of the slide, so that when the stop is positioned in the slide in the act of placement of the slide, it will not project either above or below the slide (see Fig. 1). I am thus enabled to position the stop in the slide before the same is pushed in beneath the top 1 and by raising the stop so that its lower end is flush with the bottom face of the slide, to push the slide inwardly without difliculty and without any interference'between the stop and the cross bar or frame 2. As the slide is pushed inwardly the lower end of the stop rides on the cross bar, and when it reaches the position in Fig. 2, the stop gravitates so that the lower end of stem 9 drops down in rear of bar 2. The slide, of'course can not then be withdrawn so long as the stop remains in its lowered position with the head 10 resting upon the bottom face of the countersunk recess or bore 8. Should it be desired to remove the slide it is only necessary for one to remove drawer 3 and lift the stop so that its lower end will, as the slide is drawn outwardly, pass onto the upper face of the bar 2 or into the position shown in Fig. 1.
While it is preferred to make the stop of length substantially equal to the thickness of the slide, it is evident that it may be made shorter, so long as the parts are so proportioned that the stop will have a bearing of sufficient extent in the slide and against the cross bar 2 when the slide is pulled out to its full extent.
The term desk as employed in the claims is to be understood as embracing any equivalent structure, such as a table, cabinet, or other article of furniture, in conjunction with which a slide may be employed.
What is claimed is,'-- p 1. In combination with a desk having an opening therein for the reception of a slide; slide'mounted in said opening, said slide having a bore formed therein; a gravitating stop loosely mounted in said bore and adapted, when the slide is positioned in the open ing, to drop downwardly and prevent with drawal of the slide; and means carried by the stop for limiting the downward move ment of the stop, said stop being free of any mechanical connection with the slide and readily removable therefrom.
2. In combination with a desk having an Qv V v 1,397,782
opening therein for the reception of a slide; with the larger bore uppermost; and a heada slide mounted therein, said slide having a ed pin mounted in said bore, the pin being countersunk bore formed therein; and a of a length not greater than the thickness of headed pin mounted in said bore; the pin the slide and being of such dimensions that 15 5 being .free to gravitate toposition within the stem thereof will slide freely through the bore with its lower end projecting below the bore of smaller diameter while the head the under faceof the slide. is free to move Within the bore of larger 3; Incombination with a desk having an diameter. opening therein for the reception of a slide; In testimony whereof I have signed my 20 1 a slide mounted therein, said slide having a name to this specification.
