Be it known that I. lvimrnmr B. BRONAN- mm, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Montclair, Essex county, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improven cuts in a Die-Press, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to die presses of the type such as are employed in the press ing of phonograph records. 1
These presses must be closed-under heavy pressure and this heavy pressure, to get the best results, should be applied somewhat gradually. This slow application of power usually results in cutting down the speed and hence the output of the machine.
One of the principal objects of my invention "is to combine in the one machine both the advantages of guick operation and theclosing force.
Other special objects and features of the invention will appear in the course of the following specification.
In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification I have illustrated the invention embodied in one of its practical and preferred forms, but would have it understood that the same may be modified in various respects without departure from the true spirit and scope of the invention as definedtinthe appended claims.

4, may be connected at opposite ends at 15- and 16 with the two press parts so as to form resilient stops limiting the opening movement of the press.
The press illustrated is designed particularly for pressing phonograph records and the same is accordingly provided with cooperating matrix or die members 17 and 18 between which the record is formed.
Special means for heating and cooling these die members is disclosed in the illustration in the form of a steam or heating fluid supply conduit 19 and a water or cooling two-way valve 21 having an operating handle 22 which is actuated by the two spaced sto 23 and 24 carried by the press head, the fluid controlled by said valve passing through the piping 25 and the flexible tubing 26 and 27 to the upper and lower die members respectively.
The arrangement of the valve actuating mechanism is such that on the opening or lowering movement of the press head, the
upper trip 23 will engage the valve handle and rockthe same from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 4,-so as to turn on the flow of steam or heating fluid. Hence, as the press is opened, the heating fluid is automatically admitted to the dies, so that when the press is ready to close the dies are hot and therefore in condition to operate on the material being molded.

As this movement continues the upper lever 36 snaps over into engagement with a stop 45 (Fig. 3). Themovement described-results in a quick closing action of the press and as the press parts approach the closed position, the cam 43 comes into operation and engages the roll 44. (Fig. 3) to straighten or partially straighten the lower toggle 3031, as indicated in Fig. 1, thereby ezgerting a final powerful closing force. ,1
In the openingof the press the reverse actions take place, the cam first turning away from the toggle pivot so as to release the final squeezing pressure and the rod 38 being operated as a pull link, when the crank pin engages the lower end of the slot therein, to break the upper toggle and bring the parts from the position illustrated in Fig. 1 to the position indicated in Fig. 4.

The three toggle levers, it will be seen, thus constitute in effect a com ound or double-jointed toggle, one joint 0- which is operated to effect a relatively rapid move-' ment of the press parts and the other joint of which is subsequently operated to effect a slow powerful closing action of the press parts.

Connected with the movable press head is a link which engages at its lower end-the angle arm 66 of a pivotally supported pawl 67 and which'pawl is disposed when thus actuated by themovable press head to engage the teeth of a ratchet wheel 68 rotatably supported on the driving shaft section 50. This ratchet is shown in Figs. 5and 6 as fixed on a sleeve, 69 which is rotatably engaged on the shaft section 50 and rotatably engagedon this sleeve is a second sleeve or bushing 70 carrying gear teeth 71 engaged bypinions 72. The pinions 72 and 73 are journaled on studs 75 supported on a disk or hub 76 keyed or otherwise-fixedly secured on thi driving shaft section.

will be apparent that when the press is closed (Fig. 1), the pawl will be thrown into engagement'with the ratchet and the ratchet will be thereby held against rotation while the driving section of the shaft continues to rotate. In such continued rotation of the shaft the pinions 73 will be carried about the ratchet gear 74 and will be rotated thereby. The pinions 72 forming a part of the pinions 73 are thus driven and their motion" is communicated to the gear 71 on the loose sleeve member 70, consequently, when the ratchetis caught by the pawl, the sleeve member 70 will be rotated, but in a direction the reverse of the direction of rotation of the shaft section '50. The relative movements of the shaft 50 andthe sleeve element 70 are-indicated by the reversely pointed arrows in Fig. 5. Then the parts are tripped as described, to open the press after the elapsed period of time predetermined upon, the timing gearing is restored to its original relation with the stop 93 on the trip gear (Figs. '1 and 5) in engagement with a stop 92 provided on the base of the machine. This restoration is due partly to the friction of the sleeves on the shaft which causes the trip sleeveto rotate withtlie shaft until the stop 93 engages stop 92, but may be assisted and made quicker in operation by the provision of a restoring spring which I have indicated at 90 as connected between the stop 92 on the base and the trip sleeve, the inner end of such coil spring'being shown as connected with the trip sleeve at 91.

What I claim is:
1. The combination with a press having a movable press element, of a double-jointed toggle supported at one end and connected with the movable press element at its opposite end, means for operating one of the joints of said tbggle with a relatively quick movement and means for operating the other joint of the toggle with a slower movement.
2. The combination with a press having a movable press element, of a compound tog le supported at one end and connected with t o movable press element at its opposite end, means for operating one of the joints of said compound toggle through a relatively great o of movement and means for operating another joint of the toggle through a lesser e of movement.
3. The combination with a movable press element,.of a compound toggle supported at one end and connected at the opposite end with said movable press element, means for operating one of the joints of said compound toggle through a relatively great range of movement and with a relatively rapid motion and means for operating another joint .of the compound toggle through a lesser site end with the movable press element, a
quick acting crank connected to operate one of the joints of said toggle and a slower acting cam arranged to operate another joint of said toggle.
5. The combination with a movable press element, of a multiple jointed toggle supported at one end and engaged with the movable press element at its opposite end, means for making and breaking one of the joints of said toggle and means for partially straightening another joint of said toggle.
6. The combination with a movable press element, of a multiple jointed toggle supported at one end and connected with the movable press element at its opposite end,
means for making and breaking one of the joints of the toggle and means for subsequently operating on another joint of the toggle. 1
7. The combination with a movable press element, of a multiple jointed toggle supported at one end and connected at the opposite end with the movable press element, means for straightening one of the joints of the toggleand sequentially operating means for applying a straightening force to another joint of the toggle.
8. The combination with a movable press element, of a double-jointed toggle supported at one end and connected at the opposite end with the movable press element,-means for straightening one joint of said toggle and sequentially operating means for then applying a stralghtening force to the second joint of the toggle.
9. The combination with a movable press element,of a double-jointed toggle comprising end levers and an intermediate lever, a pivotal support for one of said end levers, a pivotal connection between the other of said end levers and'said movable press element, an actuating connection with one of said end levers and a. connection with the joint between the opposite end lever and the intermediate lever. v I 0.
