Specification of Letters Patent.
Patent-eel Nov. 15,1921.
Application filed May 31, 1918. Serial No. 237,600.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND Q. HART MAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Danville, in the county of Montour and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new .and useful Improvement in Thread- Breaking Devices for Spinning-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a thread breaking device for spinning machines, and more particularly to a thread breaking device which may be applied to spinners for independently spinning a plurality of threads and winding the threads so spun on a single spool, from which latter the threads are subsequently to be twisted into one strand on a twisting machine. It is quite essential in an operation of this kind, that a single thread, or a less number than the whole number of threads being wound, be not allowed to run onto the spool as if this occurred it would produce a serious detect when the threads so spun were finally twisted into a strand. 7
My present invention is directed to a thread breaking device which may be interposed between the spindles and the take-up spool on which the spun threads are wound, and which shall be under the control of each oi the thread guide levers to perform its function of breaking a companion thread when another thread is unintentionally broken, so that the several threads may be united before any one or more of the threads has or have been allowed to be wound-upon the take-up spoolwithout its or their companion thread orthreads.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is relatively cheap and simple in construction while positive in action.
Another object consists in providing such a device which has means for automatically locking the thread breaking mechanism in inoperative position.
Another object. consists in providing such a device which has improved means for guiding and tensioning the thread.
Another object consists in providing certain improvements in the :form, construction and arrangement of the several parts whereby the above named and other objects may be elfectively attained.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings in which,
F igure 1 represents a front elevation of the device in operative position, so much of the spinning machine being shown as will suffice to disclose a practical application of my invention.
Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 represents a detail section, partly in elevatlon, of the thread breaking device proper, parts being shown in different positlons in full lines and dotted lines, and
Fig. 4 represents a detail section showing the means for attaching the guide eyes to the thread guide levers. l The main frame of the machine at one end is denoted by 1, the take-up spool by 2, the traverse guide for assembling the threads and laying them on the take-up'spool, by 3, the wheel for driving the take-up spool by f4, and a pair of spindles for spinning two independent threads by 5 and 6.
The bobbins which carry the threads are mounted on the spindles 5, 6, in the usual manner, and are indicated by 7, 8. The threads themselves are denoted by 9, 10.
For the purpose of supporting the thread breaking mechanisms in proper position on the spinning machine so that there shall be one for each group of threads to be combined on a single take-up spool, l secure a crossbar 11 to the end frames lot. the machine. This crossbar may becomposed of wood so as to receive a .screw12 for attaching the brackets containing the thread breaking mechanism in position.
Each bracket consists of a face plate 13 which has two forwardly projecting arms 14, 15, each of which arms has in turn a laterally projecting wing 16, 17. i
A pair of thread guide levers 18, 19, are pivoted in the lower part of the arms 14, 15, by a pintle 20.' This pintle is provided with a head at one end and, in order to prevent its unintentional withdrawal from the arms 14, 15, its other end has a circumferential groove in which a split ring 21 may be sprung to act as a nut.
The thread guide levers 18, 19, are provided with feet (one of which is, shown at 22. Figs. 2 and 3), which project rearwardly substantially atright angles to the main body portion of the said levers, and thebalance of the parts is such that the weight of the said feet 22 causesthe levers to be under a normal tendency to swing or drop rearwardly.
, of the guide eye is so bent as to leave a slight hump 24 at the end thereof; while the 7 end of the said bent-back portion of the guide eye is bent at right angles, as shown at 24* (Fig. 4), in order to fit into a corresponding recess at the mouth of the said opening in the lever; As a result of this arrangement it will be seen that the guide eye is held firmly against accidental withdrawal from'the lever by the hump 24, while the bent end 24* prevents the guide eye from turning in'the lever. This arrangement is shown in Fig. 4, and it provides avery cheap construction and one in which the guide maybe removed and replaced with a minimumof labor when desired;
The thread, breaking mechanism proper consists of an arm 25 which is pivoted on the pintle 20 between the levers 18, 19, and
which has a weight 26 for over-balancing it so as to cause it to normally rest in a substantiallyhorizontal position and out of the way of the threads running from the bobbins 7, 8, asclearly shown in Fig. 2. In this positionthearm 25 impinges against the lower part of the face plate 13 of the bracket. g
' The said arm 25 also has a pair of laterally extending lugs 27 which are adapted to be engaged by a foot 22 of a thread guide lever 18, 19, when one of the latter falls or drops rearwardly, for the purpose of overbalancing the -arm 25 and swinging it,
1 against the resistance of its weight 26, into approximation to the threads running from the bobbins 7, 8, as will be hereinafter described. p
The extremity of thearm 25 opposite the weight 26' is furnished with thread breaking mechanism which consists of a crosshead 28 provided with a thread catching coil 29 at each end thereof, This crosshead may be composed of wire suitably bent and coiled into shape, and it may conveniently be se cured to the arm 25 by bending it around earsv 30 formed thereon. f Y
The device also includes combined guide H and tension elements which have coiled body portions '31 32,,and upwardly extending hook- shaped stemsv 33,34. These combined 7 gu de and ,tension elements may appro- -;pr1ately,be composed of wire coiled andbent into proper shape, and they are secured to the wings 16, 17, of thebracket by means of screws 35, 36. It is intended that the thread shall be passed through one or more of the coils of the body portions 31, 32, and then wound around the stems 33, 34, one or more times in order to give the desired tension, all as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In order to hold the thread guide levers 18, 19, substantially motionless and out of engagement with the arm 25 during the spinning and winding of the thread, a guide bar 37 is mounted in the wings 16, 17 of the bracket. This guide bar may be composed of wire and takes the form of a hairpin so as to provide, in 'efltect, a pair of rails extending between the wings 16, 17, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The location of this guide bar is such that, when the thread guide levers 18, 19, are in thread guiding position with their eyes 23 engaged by the threads 9, 10, the'said eyes will lie between the two rail members of the guide bar 37 while the thread passes in front of the said members. It will be apparent that this arrangement tends to hold the lovers 18,19, snugly up against the guide bar '37 during the operation of the machine, while the said guide bar also imparts a slight additional tension to the thread owing to the balance of the guide levers 18, 19, which tends to cause them to fall rearwardly as already described.
Means is also provided for temporarily locking the thread breaking arm 25 in its withdrawn or inoperative position, clearly shown in Fig. 3. This means includes a shaft 38 which is journaled in the rear part of the arms 14, '15, of the bracket. A detent 39 is fixed to the shaft 38 by a set screw 40, and a handle 41 is formed by bending one end of the shaft 38. In order to lock the thread breaking arm 25 in inoperative position as mentioned, it is simply necessary to turn the handle 41, and hence the shaft 38 and detent carried thereby, into position so that the extremity of the detent engages the adjacent extremity of the'weight 26, as
shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. When the parts are in this position, the thread may be disengaged from either or both of-the guide levers 18, 19, andthe latter be permitted to contact with the lugs 27 on the arm25 without forcing the latter into juxtaposition with the thread.
In operation the thread which comes from the bobbins 7, 8, is passed through the coils 31, 32, and around the stems 33, 34, of the combined guide and tension elements, thence thronghlthe eyes,23"'and thence over the traverse guide, 3 and onto the spool 2. If, during theoperation of the machine, one of the threads 9, 10, accidentally breaks, the guide lever with which it is engaged will at oncedrop back so that its foot contacts with V a lug 27 on the arm 25 and thereby overbalances the latter against its weight 26 so as to cause itto swing down into thepositionshown in full lines in Fig. 3, in which position one of its coils 29 will at once be engaged by the unbroken thread whirling about, whereby the said thread will be broken and thus prevent a length of single thread from being wound upon the spool, 2,
The subject matter of my co-pending applications, Serial. Nos. 373,748, 373,749, 373,7 50, filed April 14th, 1920, is shown and described but not claimed herein.
It will be understood that various changes may be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts with out departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not intend to be limited to the details herein shown and described except as they may be specifically included in the claims.
