HOUSEHOLD ARTICLE.
Application led Inrch 3, 1920. Serial No.
ments in household articles, and it is an object of the invention to provide a portable device including a driven shaft provided with means whereby devices or elements may be engaged or coupled thereto to facilitate the cleaning and polishin of silver, whipping cream, beating eggs, s arpening knifes, cleaning and polishing nails, or for use in other operations incident to the work in a household or in connection with the toilet.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character embodying a casing provided witha part servin as a hand grasp and wherein a driven sha is rotatably supported b saidcasing and driven by a motor contained within the casing.
he invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several p arts of my improved device whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that ni invention may be the better understood, ywill now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accomwherein: v
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a household article constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a view partly in longitudinal section and partly in elevation of the device as herein disclosed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, C denotes a casing of desired dimensions and configurationl and comprising two separable parts, land 2. Arranlged within the casing C is a motor M of an e ectric type in operative' connection with the motor are suitable conductors comprised inthe cord 3. The cord 3 extends exteriorly of the casing C through an opening 4 in a wall Specification of Letters Patent.
.the inner end of the Patented Nov. 15, 1921. 362,957.
thereof and said cord 3 is outer extremity with whereby the conductors comprised within the cord may be suitably connected with a source of electric energy.
sections 1 and 2 of t casing g vided with the openings 6 to facilitate the cooling of the motor M when 1n operation. .he section l of the casing U, at substantially its center, is provided with an elond tubular extension7, preferably inteand disposed through the s is clearly illustrated in Fig. of the extension 7 is materially in excess of the diameter of the shaft 9 so that the shaft 9 will be rotated with a minimum offrictional resistance and so that the said extension 7 will not become heated. It is to be particularly noted that is open so that said extension may be aii cooled. The shaft 9 is supported only by the motor M and the outer or closed end of the extension 7. The chuck 10 is adapted to have engaged therewith suitable tools or elements to permit the device to be employed in connection with the character of work desired to be'performed, such as cleaning and polishing silver, whipping cream, beatin eggs, sharpenning knives, cleaning and po ishing nails, et cetera. The extension 7 serves as a handle or hand grasp and for which reason, the periphery thereof is knurled as at 11, and in practice, the extension is adapted to be grasped by a hand of the user whereby the efiiciency of the device is materially increased.
The extended has fixed thereto a knurled head or a button 12 which is adapted to be grasped to hold the shaft 9 against rotation when the chuck is being manipulated to properly engage the tool with which the same is'adapted to be em loyed.
rom the foregoing description, it vis thought to be obvious that a device constructed in accordance with my invention isl bore of the extension 7 poi-tion of the shaftl 9 also ceptble of some change and modification Without departing from the principles and spirit thereof, and for` this reason, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to l the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.V
A device of the character described comprising a casing provided with a tubular extension, said extension serving as a hand grasp, the outer end of the extension being closed and the inner end openin into the casing, a motor contained within t e casing,
' a shaft disposed through the extension in driving connection with the motor, said shaft extending through the closed end of the extension, said closed end of theexte'nsion and motor providing the only supports for the shaft, the bore of the extension being of a diameter materially in excess of the diameter ofthe shaft, the Walls of the casing being provided with openings for the admission of air within the casing, and a chuck carried by the shaft exteriorly of the extension.l
In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my signature.
PETER F. GLENN.
