CAP.
Specicaton of Letters Patent. y "`PMjognted N0V 15, 1321.
Application led January 18, 1921. Serial No. 438,133.
To all whom it may Concern Be it known that l, JACOB Yarrow, a citizen of Russia. residing at the city of St. Louis` State of Missouri. have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Caps. of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing7 forming a part thereof.
This invention relates generally to headwear and, more particularly. toa certain new and useful improvement in caps, the principal object of my present invention being to provide a cap with a readily and conveniently attachable and detachable section for covering and'protecting the ears and back of the head, whereby the Cap may be convertibly worn with comfort as a headcovering only or ordinary cap in clement, mild weather, and as a head and ear covering in inclement, cold weather.
With the above and other objects| in view, my present invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement7 and combination of parts hereinafter described and afterward pointed out in the claims.
ln the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is aperspective View of a cap equipped for the attachment of the separable ear-and-neck protecting-section, the latter being omitted;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the ear and neck protecting-section;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cap with the separable ear and neck protectionsection attached;
Fig. 1 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the cap and attached separable ear and neck protecting section taken approximately on the line 4 4. Fig. 8; and
Fig. 5 is a similar view taken approxi.- mately On the line 5--5, Fig. 3.
Referring now more in detail to the said drawing, which illustrates a practical embodiment of my invention, and in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views, the cap proper comprises a body-portion 10, which may be of any suitable flexible material, and which is preferably inturned or folded upon itself at its lower margin, as at 10a. Disposed within and extending substantially around the body-portion 10 at its margin, as best seen in Fig. 1, is a flat tubular band 11 inclosing a flat strip of buckraxn or other suitable stiifening material 12, the band 11 and its stiffening strip 12 being fixed together and to the flexible body-fold 10EL by preferably spaced longitudinal rows of threadstitches 13. Sewed or otherwise fixed to the cap-body 10 and reinforced or stiffened band 11j is a front viZor 14, which may be of any usual or approved form; and formed through the'band 11 and its stiifening strip 12 on opposite sides of the Cap and preferably adjacent the opposite inner ends of the vizor 14. are transverse openings or apertures 15-15 preferably of elongated buttonhole shape. Also fixed to, and extending around within, the cap-body 10 at the front of the cap to cover and normallv conceal the holes or openings 15, is a sweat band 16 of leather or other suitable material.
The ear and neck protecting section. which may for brevity be designated the ear-protecting section, comprises a body-portion 17 having preferably the shape and marginal contour` illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 to cover the ears and back of the head and neck when separably attached, as hereinafter appearing, to the cap-body. This portion 17 may be of any suitable flexible material and preferably includes an outer piece of mateterial 18 which matchesor corresponds with the material of body 10 and an inner piece of material 19 of` soft, woolly texture comfort-able and warmth-providing to the ears and head. Sewed or otherwise fixed to, and extending continuously along, the upper -marginal edgeof the portion 17, is a piece of cloth or other relatively thin iieXible material 20 preferably folded upon itself at its upper or free end, and throughout its length to form an elongated longitudinally disposed pocket or casing7 as at 21. Fitting lengthwise in the pocket 21 with its opposite ends 'extending outwardly therebeyond, as at 22-22, and securely fixed to the pocket 21 by thread-stitches or the like 23, is a strip 24 of whale-bone or other suitable pliable material. Normally the pocket 21 and its attached strip 24 are folded downwardly to extend lengthwise along the outer face of the flexible piece 20 and above the bodypiece or portion 17.
When it is desired to employ the ear-protecting section with the cap proper the pocket or casing 21 and its attached strip 24 are placed or'inserted between the cap-body 10 and its stiffened band 11 and the projectmodates itself to the shape of the cap and to the contour of the wearers head, and it may be here stated that, while with the ear-protecting section so attached to the cap proper, the normal head-size of the cap is slightly reduced7 due to the interposition between the hea-d and the cap-band 11 ofthe flexible piece 20, such slight reduction in head-size is not sufficient to cause the wearer any discomfort, but is suflicient, and is utilized, to cause the ear-protecting section to tightly hug and thereby protect the ears, back of the head, and neck of the wearer. The outer-piece of the body 17 of the ear and neck protecting section being preferably, as stated, of the same material as the cap-body 10, the section, when in cap-attached position, also harmonizes with, and provides a neat yappearing addition to, the cap proper.V
7 hen it is not desired to employ the protecting section, the body-portion 17 of the section may, as will be evident, be readily folded within the interior of the cap-body 10, the strip `24 remaining in position between the cap-body 10 and the band l1 with its ends 22 4fitting in the holes 15, or the section as a whole may be quickly detached and removed from the cap body; in either such event, the cap may be worn or used as an ordinary or standard head-covering cap only.
I am aware that changesin the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my new cap may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A cap comprising a body-portion and a baud fixed at a side-margin to, and extending around within, the body-portion, the band being provided with openings disposed at opposite sides of the body-portion, in combination with an ear-protecting section adapted to depend below the margin of said hotly-portion and provided flexibly at its upper margin. with a pliable strip 'whose opposite ends extend beyond the opposite side margins Yof the section, the strip being adapted to removably t between the cap body-portion and band and its extended ends being adapted for projection through said openings in attaching the section to said body-portion. t
2. A cap comprising a body-.portion and a transversely'stiffened band fixed at a sidemargin to, and extending around within, the body-portion, the band being provided with openings disposed at opposite sides of vthe body-portion, in combination with an ear-protecting section adapted to depend below the margin of said bodyportion and provided fiexiblyat its upper margin with a pliable strip whose opposite ends extend beyond the opposite side margins of the `section, the strip being adaptedto removably fit between the ycap body-portion and band and its extended ends being adapted for projection inwardly of the cap-body-,portion through said openings 4in attaching the Vsection to said body-portion, land a second band on the cap-body-portion for covering said openings and the inwardly projecting'ends of said strip when said section is attached to the cap. Y
In testimony whereof, I' have signed my name to this specification.
JACOB YANOW.
