UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL H. CLAUD MAYNE, OF WINDER, GEORGIA.
DETACHABLE DRAWER SETS AND ROLLERS..
Application filed July 16,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. C. MAYNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winder, in the county of Barrow and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Drawer Sets and Rollers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in detachable drawer sets and rollers and it is an object of the invention to provide a mechanism of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with a sliding drawer and which, when in working arrangement, operates to permit the drawer to have easy sliding movement and in a manner whereby the drawer, when extended, is revented from sagging.
. Another object 0 the invention is to provide a mechanism of this general character embodying tracks constructed in a manner whereby the associated rollers are held against displacement relative to the tracks, together with means whereby the rollers may be conveniently and effectively applied to an associated drawer.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved detachable drawer sets and rollers whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that m invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
igure 1 is a horizontal sectional view taken through a sliding drawer having associated therewith a mechanism constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, certain of the parts being in top Ian; 1 p Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in horizontal section and part1 in top plan illustrating in detail certain o the parts of my improved mechanism, a drawer Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 15, 1921.
1921. Serial No. 485,286.
being at the limit of its outward movement, a second position of certain of the parts being indicated by dotted lines;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional View taken substantially on the line 55 of Fig. 3; and
F ig.-6 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 6-6 of Fig 5 As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, C denotes a portion of a cabinet with which is associated a sliding drawer D. Each of the side walls 1 of the drawer D extends below the bottom 2 of the drawer and contacts with and rides upon a roller 3. This roller 3 is rotatably supported by a plate 4 secured to a vertical member of the cabinet C and by a bracket 5 secured to a horizontal member of the cabinet and spotwelded or otherwise attached, as at 6, to the rear and lower portion of the plate 4.
The upper portion of each of the plates 4 is outwardly offset, as at 4, and said offset portion 1 is spot-welded or otherwise secured to an end portion of a horizontally disposed track T suitably anchored to the cabinet C, the adjacent vertical members of the cabinet C being cut away, as at 7, to receive the tracks T so that the same will oifer no obstruction or hindrance to the desired slidin movement of the drawer D.
ach of the tracks T comprises a central or body plate 8 having its longitudinal mar ginal portions defined by .the inwardly directed flanges 9, said flanges 9 terminating in inwardly directed flanges 10. By having each of the tracks T thus constructed, an associated roller R is effectively held against displacement, said roller being of a diameter to bridge the space between the flanges 10.
Each of the tracks T has spot-welded or otherwise afiixed to the forward portion of the body plate 8 thereof a plate 11 provided with an inwardly directed flange or lip 12. This flange or 11p 12 provides a stop with which a roller R is adapted to contact so that the outward sliding movement of the drawer D is limited and whereby sagging of said drawer, when extended, is prevented so that at all times the drawer D will be supported in a manner for easy and unhindered sliding movement.
The rear wall 14 of the drawer D has extending entirely therealong a recess 15 and .slidably mounted in each end portion of the recess 15 is an elongated strap or member 16 preferably of metal.
of the member 16 terminates in an outstand- The outer end portion directed through a relatively large washer 22 with which directly contactsa binding or clamping nut 23 of a wing type.
When it is desired to entirely remove the 2 drawer D from within the cabinet C, the
nuts 23 are loosened and the straps or members 16 moved inwardly a distance sufficient to free the shafts or'trunnions 18 from the rollers R, whereupon the drawer D may be entirely removed from the cabinet C. In mounting the'drawer D, the members or straps 16 are moved" outwardly until the shafts or'trunnions 18properly engage the rollers R, whereuponthe'nuts 23 are tightened! The. tracks T are preferably made of pressed steel, sanded'and lacquered, so that they cannot rust and are impervious to atmosphericeonditions. The rollers are preferably of vulcanized fiber with the stub shafts or trunnions 18 of steel, so that the drawer has noiseless sliding movement with practically no friction and the necessity of using oil or other lubricant obviated.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a detachable drawer set and roller constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience laterally directed flanges and inwardly directed flanges extending from the first named flanges, a roller coacting with each of the .trackways inwardly of the last named flanges, members slidably mounted upon the drawer and movable in a direction toward or from a trackway, each of said members being provided with an outwardly disposed trunnion, each of the rollers having an axial opening to receive a trunnion when a member is moved in one direction, and means for holding each of the members against movement.
2. In combination with a drawer, rollers arranged at opposite sides of the drawer, each of said rollers traveling in substantially a fixed path, members slidably mounted upon the drawer and movable in a direction toward or'from a roller, each of said members being provided with an outwardly disposed trunnion, each of said rollers having an axial opening to receive a trunnion when a member is moved in one direction, and means for holding each of said members against movement.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ailix my signature.
SAMUEL H. CLAUD MA YNE.
