Phinney, No.- 1,253,879, ,dated January 15,l
The object of the invention is to provide amachinehaving f all of. ,the advantages stated: in the said -patent to Phinney, wheref inthe selecting kor differential actuating wheels and the ,driving elements or dogs of the .carry `mechanism may be rotated continuously. through one or more cycles of operation, andy having further a driving train for these parts which will transmit motion theretofrom the operating handle at a yconstant speedqratio.
The inventionfconsists inthe novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinaftersetforth.I u l f f Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 8, `1921.
Application yled December 26,1918. Serial*` N o. 268,843.
` In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the numeral 1, designates the casing of the machine; 2 the transversely shiftable i carriage whereon the yregister wheels 13 aremounted; 3 the operating han-k dle; 4 the shaftuponwhieh the selecting or differential 'actuating wheels 5 are mounted; 12 the gears intermediater of the selecting and register wheels; l7 3 the shaft upon which the carry mechanism vis mounted bearing the radial arms m, and they dogs j; and 74, 75, p and 76 a train'of gear wheels establishing a driving connection between the shaft` 73 and the operatinghandle.
kThe selecting wheels 5 consist of gears f having teeth of graded extent, and are shiftable laterallyk upon their shaft 4v to bring a selected numberIk of teeth in position to register withthe respectiveintermediate gears, 12.y Each selecting wheel 5 has a bank of digital keys 18 associated therewith, j the lower 'cam heads 25 of thek keys acting through rock bars 19 to impart the appropriate degree vof lateral-movement to the selecting wheels 5. f
The shaft 4 and the selecting`wheels thereon are adapted tov be vibrated to-k and fro into and out of driving engagement with the intermediate gears "by means shown in the said patent to Phinney and consisting .of
f levers'r 15, wherein the shaft 4 isjournaled,
said levers being fulcrumed at 16 to the side plates of the frame or casing and having diverging or branched arms 17 carrying anti-friction rollers the latter bearingupon the peripheral surfaces of rotary'cams 19, fast to the shaft 73. j In the rotation ofthe cams, the levers 15 will be first rocked to one side to-.move .the shaft 4 and the` selecting ywheels bodily toward the intermediate gears tol bringfsaid wheels from normal or neutral position int-o full meshA with said gears, Aand after the rotation of the selecting wheels iny the registering operation,A saidu levers ywill be ref verse y rocked to move said shaft and the selecting wheels reversely to and past normal position to bring said wheels entirely? out of mesh with the intermediate gears where they will remain during the` operation ofthe carrying mechanism. In the completion` of the .operation the llevers r`will be rocked to restore the selecting wheelsto normalposition.
Were a planetary` or chain'` 'gearzconnec-r tion employed between the shaft et and the main driving train, in the bodily movement of said shaft and of the selecting wheels thereon to bring said wheels into full mesh with the-intermediate gears (this operation being preliminary to the performance of a problem) the selecting wheels would be always rotated, irrespective of the movement of the driving gear, owing tothe engagement of the driven with the driving member of said' connection.
In the movement of the gears in one direction for the performance ofaddition, the rotation of the selecting wheels referred to will be subtracted from the rotation of said wheels brought about by the driving gear movement alone to cause a retardation of the rotation of the selecting wheels, and per contra in the movement of the gears in the opposite direction as in performing subtraction, the extra rotation of the selecting wheels referred to willbe added to the rotation thereofby the driving gear to cause an acceleration of the rotation of the selecting wheels. This acceleration and retardation of these wheels' will result in an objectionable variable resistance to the movement of the operating shaft or handle and is eliminated by this invention now to be described`` A pinion 21 in mesh with the gear 75 of the driving train mounted up'on a stud shaft 2O of the framing and is provided with a. driving connection with the shaft -l of the selecting wheels through the following medium: y
A driving disk 22, fast to the stud sha-ft is provided with diametric lateral recesses 23 Vand Q-l, crossingat right angles, the recess 23 being of greater breadth than the recess Qa, and as a result of the recesses, theV disk is provided with four sector-form lateral projections 25, spaced apart b v the recesses. A driven disk 26 is fasty to the adjacent end of the shaft 4i, and is similarly provided with diametric recesses 2T and 28, crossing at right angles and with four sector-form lateral projections 29, spaced apart by the recesses, the wide and narrow recesses of one disk being located respectively oppcsite the narrow and widerscesses of the other disk.A Between the driving and driven disks is a Heating crossform connecting member 30, having four radial arms 31, of the same width respectively as that of the narrow recesses of the disks, two opposite arms of said member having close sliding engagement with the narrow recess-of one disk and laterally loose engagement with the lwide recess of the otherpdisk, and the other two arms-of said member having laterally loose engagement with the wide recess of the first named disk, and close sliding engagementwith the narrow recess of the last named disk.
thereafter moved bodily reversely entirely out of mesh with the gears and finally back again to neutral or normal position', and the driving disk rotating the driven disk throughout this operation, the driven disk will vibrate or move to and fro bodily with the' selecting wheels and the cross-form member will likewise vibrate or move to and fro, two opposite arms of said member sliding lengthwiseV of the narrow recess of the driven disk and moving bodily across the wide recess of the driving disk, and the other two armsv of said member sliding lengthwise of the narrow recess of the driving disk and moving bodily across the wide recess of the driven disk. The vibration or movement to and fro of the said member in said recesses is not however in unison with the vibration or bodily movement of the selecting wheels and driven disk toward andV away from the intermediate gears.
rl`he cross-form member and the driving and driven dislstherefore provide a medium whereby the stud shaft will always rotate theshaft of the selecting wheels in the vibratory bodily movement of the latter without lost motionor appreciable added friction.
1t is preferred that when the selecting wheels are in full mesh with the intermediate gears, the shaft thereof shall be axially alined with the stud shaft 20, for the reason thatin this relationv of the shafts,` the crossform member and the driving and driven disks will constitute a rigid driving connection between the stud shaft and the' shaft of the selecting wheels with no added friction whatever.
