Description

A. P. THOMASSON.
FUEL SAVING DEVICE.
APPLICATION mso Amm, 1921.
Patented Nov. 8, 1921.
UNITED STATES ADAM P. THOMASSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FUEL-SAVING- DEVICE.
Application led April 2,
To all 'u1/0m 2f may concern.'
e it known that I, ADAM P. THoMAssoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuel-Saving Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fuel saving devices, and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly eflicient in use.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a heating device whereby ashes containing cinders and unburned particles of combustion or the like can be consumed.
Other objects will appear hereinafter,
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter` described and claimed.
The invention will be best understoodby reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, and in which,
Figure l is an elevational view of a heating apparatus partly in section, showing my improved construction mounted thereon; and
F ig. 2 is a sectional view of the same taken substantially on line 2-2 of F ig. l.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawing, comprises a heating apparatus fl of any construction or design, having the usual grate 5. A rod is centrally rotatably mounted on the heating` apparatus 4, directly over the i'ire bed 7. One end cf the rod 6 is provided with a handle 8 to afford a means for manual operation. Rigidly xed to the rod 6 is a metallic plate 9 semi-circular in shape and arranged to serve as a check, changing the course of the draft through the grate. A metallic supply pipe l0, having a plurality of perforations and controlled by a hand valve l', is mounted directly over a bed of ashes ll which are to be consumed, and arranged to constantly nioisten the ashes when desired. Directly opposite the lire door l2, another fire door 12 is hingedly mounted on the heating apparatus, )providing an opening through which the ashes are fed to the ash bed ll. The metallic plate 9 is provided with a depending flange 9 arranged to prevent the ashes from being thrown onto Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 8, 1921. 1921. Serial No. 457,909.
the front portion of the fire as the said ashes are fed through the door l2.
In operation, a fire is built in the combustion chamber in the usual manner, providing two individual fire beds 7, one-half of which is arranged to receive fresh fuel and the other half arranged to receive ashes or the like. The hand valve l0 is then opened, allowing the desired amount of water to flow onto the bed of burning ashes containing cinders and unburned particles of combustion, causing the same to discharge an inflammable gas, transforming the ashes containing cinders and unburned particles of combustion into a soft lumpy form which will be readily consumed. The plate 9 is swung into a vertical position until the fire is properly burning, at which time the plate 9 is swung back closing the front half of the combustion chamber, changing the course of the draft and causing the products of combustion to pass through the bed of ashes, thereby keeping the bottom of the ashes burning. During the progress of combustion should the ashes or the like cause the fresh fuel to become partly extinguished, l'the plate 9 can be swung over covering the bed of ashes and causing the draft to change its course, passing directly through the bed of fresh fuel.
y my arrangement, a simple and inexpensive fuel saving device can be installed in any stove, furnace or the like, and ashes, garbage, paper or the like can be consumed without quenching the bed of burning fuel.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modication without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, d0 not wish to be limited to the precise details of the construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
aving described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In combination with a heating apparatus having a grate and oppositely arranged doors; a supporting member rotatably mounted in the combustion chamber of said heating apparatus; a draft shield having a depending flange formed on said meinber and operative therewith; and a handle formed on said supporting member for manipulating` said shield over opposite per tions of said grate, substantially as described. f
.2. In combination with a heating appa Y ratus having a grate and oppositely archamber; means for feeding 3. In combination With a heating apparatus having a fire grate and combustion fresh fuel to grate; means for feeding one portion of said unburned particles moist ashes containingv of combustion to the other portionof said grate; a rod rotatably mounted in said cornbustion chamber; a plate mounted on said rod and operative therewith; a depending flange on said plate for preventing said ashes from being fed on said first-mentioned portionofsaid grate; and a handle on said rod for rotating said plate over one portion of said grateto the other portion of said grate, substantially as described.
4. In Combination with a heating apparatus having a fire grate and combustion Chamber;l means for feeding fresh fuel to one portion of said grate; means for feeding moist ashes Containing unburned particles of combustion to the other portion of said grate; and a draft shieldrotatably mounted in said combustion chamber arranged to be shifted over opposite portions of said grate, one end of said shield being bent downwardly substantially at right angles for preventing said ashes from being fed on said first mentioned portion of said grate, substantially as described. i
In testimony whereof I have signed my nametov this specification in the presence 0f two subscribing Witnesses. i Y
ADAM THOMASSON.
