UNITED STATES JOHN A. KULIER, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
LATCH DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 8, 1921.
Application filed July 3, 1920. Serial No. 393,854.
T 0 all u' from 'it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN A. KULrER, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latch Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to latch devices and particularly to devices of this class designed to be used in connection with doors of various kinds and classes, as for example, the doors of motor vehicles, and the object of this invention is to simplify the construction of the latch device in such manner as to materially reduce the cost of production, which result is produced by fashioning the various parts of the complete latch device from sheet metal bent into the desired form, and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a latch device of the class specified which is constructed and operated as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following' specification, of which the accompan'ving drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved i, latchfdevice;
Fig. 2 a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 a partial section on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2; and,
' Fig. 4 a partial section on the line 1s-4 of Fig. 3.
My improved latch device comprises a suitable casing 5 composed of two sheet metal plates 6 and 7. The plate 6 is oblong and rectangular in form and is provided at one end thereof with an angularly arranged flange S, the central portion of which is cut out and bent inwardly and upwardly to form a guide 9 for a latch bolt 10 which is movable inwardly and outwardly through an aperture 11 formed by stamping the part 9 from the iiange 8. The plate 6 is provided at predetermined points with screw apertures 12 to facilitate the attachment of said plate to a suitable support.
The plate 7 is fashioned into box-shaped formation, the side and one of the end walls 13 of which extend at right angles to the vplate 7 and are provided at intervals with projecting lugs 14 adapted to be passed I to receive oppositely directed bearings 19 i on a roll back 20, mounted within the casing or between the separate plates 6 and 7. rThe roll back 2O is provided, in the form of construction shown. with a central rectangular aperture 21 which is adapted to receive the shank of a knob, handle, or the like in the usual manner. The roll back 20 is provided with oppositely directed arms 22 which are adapted to operate in connection with downwardly directed members '23 formed on a latch bolt guide plate 24.
The plate 24 is formed from sheet metal and one end of which is reduced as shown at and countersunk in and secured to the latch bolt l0, as indicated in Fig. 2, and the other end portion of said plate is bent downwardly and outwardly to form a transverse guide member 26, The plate 24: is mounted between the plates 6 and 7 of the casing 5 and the main body portion 27 of said plate tits within the plate 7 and the side walls 13 thereof, and is guided thereby and by the guide member 26 and latch bolt 10. An elongated aperture 2S is formed centrally of the body portion 27 of the plate 24 and through which one of the bearings 19 of the roll back 20 is adapted to pass in the inward and out-- ward movement of the latch bolt.
The latch bolt 10 isnormally held in its extended position by two spiral springs 29 which bear on the projecting members 23 and are supported in the casing 5 by a yoke 30 located inwardly of the end wall 13 of the plate 7, and the ends of which are provided with inwardly directed arms 31 on which the coil springs 29, or one end portion thereof are mounted.
In theuse of my improved latch device it will be apparent that when the door to which the latch device is attached is closed or slammed the latch bolt 10 will be moved inwardly by its engagement with the usual striking plate and again moved outwardl)T by the spiral springs 29 and, in this operation, the roll back 20 remains in a stationary position. In other words, in the operation arm with one of the Vprojecting members 23,
and when the operating handle or knob is released the springs 29 willreturn the various parts of the latch device to their normal position. j
VIt will be apparent that the various parts of my improved latch device with the exception of the roll back 2O and latch bolt 10 are composed of sheet met-al fashioned into the desired form and which areassembled and secured together in a simple and yet effective manner, and while I have shown certain details of construction for carrying my invention into effect', it will beapparent that I am not necessarily limited to these details, and changes therein and modiication thereofv may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spi-rit of my invention or sacrificing itsadvantages. i
Having fullydescribed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is :-f- 1. A latch device of the class described comprising a casing composed of two sheet metal parts fashioned into the` desired form, means for securing said parts together to formr said casing, a latch bolt movable inwardly and outwardly through one end of said casing, a sheet metal guide plate rigidly secured toi and forming a part of said latch bolt and mounted within said casing, said guide plate fitting snugly in and being guided by thecasing and. provided at the sides thereof with projecting members fashioned therefrom, a roll back rotatably mounted in the casing and in operative connection with the projecting members on said guide plate whereby said latch bolt may be moved inwardly by the rotation of said roll back, and tensional means mounted within the casing and cooperating with the projecting members on said guide plate for normally holding the latch bolt in an extended position. ,j j
2. A latch device of the class described composed of two sheet metal parts, one of said partsfecnsisting of a plate having a flange arranged at an angle thereto and the other part being box-shaped in form and secured to the first named part, the last named part being provided adjacent to the flange of the first named part with a central aperture, and said flange being provided 'with a member stamped therefrom and extending yover said aperture, a latch bolt movable inwardly and outwardly through the flange of the first named part of the casing and into the aperture of the last named part with the ymember of said ange bearing onsaid bolt,
a sheet metal guide plate rigidly secured to and forming part of said latch bolt, and mounted snugly within said casing and guided thereby, two projecting members fashioned from the opposite sides of said guide plate, means movably mounted in the casing and in operative connection with said members for withdrawing said latch bolt, spiral springs mountedin thev opposite, sid-es of said casing and Vcooperating with said projecting members to; normally hold said latch bolt in an extended position, and a yoke-shaped retainer mounted in said casing and provided with parts which coperate with and are adapted to guide said springs.
3. The combination with a latch device of the class described involving a suitable casing., of a latchbolt.construction comprising a latch bolt proper and a sheet metal guide plate partially embedded in and rigidly secured to said boltl to form a permanent part thereof.
4C. The combination with a latch device of the classdescribed involving a. suitable casing, of a latch bolt construction comprising a latch bolt proper, a sheety metal guide plate partially embedded in and rigidly secured to said bolt to forman integral part thereof., and meanson said casing and said guide plate for reinforcing the same for guiding, the movement of said latch bolt construction lin said casing. f
In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing as my Vinvention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses' this 2nd day of July 1920. Y JOHN A. KULIlfll.v
